OOC: Through the Valley Part 2, Prompt 5. Set for May 3rd.

Well, this was definitely not how Auger expected to be spending his evening. He should have listened to his senses telling him that rain would soon be coming: clouds had been building, the air smelled fresh. At first, he thought that maybe it would just be a short, light rain. But no, it started pouring, forcing them to find some sort of shelter. Then the thunder and lightning had started. Now here they were, stuck in a too-small cave, which was really more of an outcropping of rocks, unable to get a fire going properly. The wind was blocked from a couple of sides, but rain still hit them as it blustered.

Auger struck the flint again, hoping that this time, the fire would take. For a couple of seconds, he thought that it had, but then the wind swirled, bringing enough rain with it to put out the tiny flames that had been trying to spread on the wet wood. No good. Auger growled quietly, peering into the storm, hoping that Notch would return soon. Having him out of sight looking for dry firewood was making Auger anxious.

“This is useless,” Auger said, trying to keep the growl out of his voice. It wasn’t Ceridwen’s fault that the birch bark kindling was soaked, which was the same as the rest of the wood, so even if he managed to light that, the fire probably wouldn’t get any bigger. “I don’t think we’re going to get a fire going in this storm.” He spoke up to be heard over the wind and rain.

She felt guilty for ignoring all the signs of an upcoming heavy rainfall, all so that she could collect a couple bulbs that now looked rather paltry sitting in her open palm. Sighing, she squared them away into her burlap shoulder bag, deciding that even in her frustration, it was not worth throwing them away. It was merely the icing on the cake to a fairly bad day. First, they had to investigate the large paw prints found around their last camp.

Nothing was disturbed, or so it seemed, but then one of the horses got loose and had to be disturbed, adding to already high tentions. Then, she had discovered one of the chickens had broken open an entire back of feed. Because it couldn't stop there, amidst all the chaos, she had forgotten to put the kindling and wood out of the rain's way. It was a poor situation all around, and now the weather finally matured their mood; dreadful.

"I'm sorry, Auger," She approached with her tail hanging, weighed down by the rain as much as her own dismay. "The wind is really kicking up, we ought to just cut our losses and just see if we can get some branches or something to help create a windbreak." They had pulled away from the mountains, making it difficult to find somewhere adequate to wait out a storm in a pinch. "Have you seen Notch, or Raffy?" Only now did she notice that neither had been seen for some time. She would not have put it past her older brother to save his own skin by any means necessary, but couldn't help but worry.

“That might be a good idea,” Auger said after yet another attempt at getting a fire going was buffeted away by the wind. He tossed aside his fire starting tools as Ceri asked about Notch and her brother. Auger’s initial response was a one shoulder shrug. He had been trying not to think too much about Notch since that would only lead to worrying about him. Auger was worried though. He always worried when Notch was away from him, and right now, it was much worse, even if he was doing his best not to let on.

Just as he opened his mouth to respond, there was a flash of lightning that startled him, followed by a rumble of thunder. Almost simultaneously, he felt arms come around his neck and he was yanked backwards. It was no easy feat, given his stocky size. He yelped in surprise, quickly bringing his hands up to prevent the arms from choking him.

The scent of blood hit Auger’s nose, confusing him. Had something happened to Ceridwen? Snarling, Auger clawed at the arm, digging in hard until it let go. Then he spun around, searching through the rain for his attacker. Another flash of lightning illuminated the figure, but he couldn’t make out any specific features. All he could see was that the guy looked wolfish and huge. The wolf lunged forward and Auger braced himself as the scuffle continued.
