Auger had never really considered how much there was to do in a newly formed pack. It was definitely different from simply setting up a new camp. Those were always temporary, so no care was given to making it very comfortable. It was pointless work. But now, since they intended to stay in the area, it was worth breaking trails, finding buildings to salvage, and spots where other buildings could go.

Notch walked along next to Auger as he led his horse, Monte, to what looked to be a deer trail. They had followed it to see where it went and Auger figured it was probably worth cleaning up and widening a bit to make it easier for Luperci to get by. Auger had the reins of his horse loosely over his shoulder, having trained the horse to follow along willingly. Sometimes he was more spirited than was necessary, such as when he decided a plant looked particularly tasty. Auger could never tell the difference between plants, but apparently the horse could.

“This looks like it will take a while,” Notch said, resting his hand on Auger’s arm.

“That’s alright,” Auger said as they reached what appeared to be the natural trail head. “Let’s just start here I guess and see how far we get?” Auger suggested and Notch nodded. Despite his often overly fancy appearance, Notch was willing to put in just as much hard work as Auger was.

They split up and started pulling at the brush, hacking at it with their knives when needed. For lack of anything better to do, they piled it up at the edge of the newly forming trail. Someone else approached and Auger looked up to see who it was, hoping it was someone who could lend a hand. He didn’t expect to get the whole trail cleared today, but he at least wanted to make a good dent in it. Once it was done, maintenance would be easier as long as they kept up with it.

All things truly wicked start from Innocence

Even though much of the land where the coyotes had claimed was originally what surrounded the Cartel's camp, there was still much that was either unfamiliar to them, or would need to be taken care of. The fire had done a fair amount of damage to the area around where the camp once was, and there was sure to be some in the distance between where the Posse's camp used to be as well. Both of the bands had come together.

And they had to make the most of what they collectively had amongst one another. Perhaps it would be time to go out and see if they could find some naive travelers to help build up their stocks.

With Spitfire still in the care of Twelve, Dahlia found herself walking on foot. It wasn't too much of a hassle to cross along the territory, not when much of it was taken up by the water. If she needed to get anywhere, then all she would need to do was follow along the shores until she got to where she was going.

The gray coyote paused for a moment to the sound of two voices before there being a rustling among the green. Curious of the source, she began to follow the sounds, her ears moving in alert to anything new around this area. As she came closer, there were two others here, both of which whom were fairly new to her. She had seen both of them as members of the Posse, but never had much of a chance to interact with them. The lighter male had lifted his head up when he heard her coming, so it wasn't like her appearance was much of a shock.

Pausing, she stepped closer to them, "You all look like you could use an extra hand. Got room for one more?"

Sorry it took me some time to get to this. I am here now. +300 words.

“Help would be great!” Notch called before Auger could respond. He sighed, but there was a fond look on his face as his companion crashed through the brush that Auger would have cleaned next. “Hi! I’m Notch; this is Auger, and that’s Monte,” Notch said, gesturing to Auger’s bay stallion as he finished the introductions.

“We’re planning to take this trail up that way for a bit,” Auger said, pointing ahead. The trail through the trees was visible a little from deer using it, so at least they didn’t have to mark it out. “There’s some heavier brush up ahead, so I figure we’ll use Monte to pull it out.” That would be easier than trying to pull roots out themselves; Monte was far stronger.

Notch stuck closer now that someone else was with them as he and Auger got back to work. The piles of brush grew quickly, and Auger figured some of the larger sticks could be bundled up and dried out to turn into kindling. The small stuff was useless, but he supposed it could still get burned just to get rid of it.

Auger heard Notch squeak and looked up in time to watch him fall on his butt when a particularly stubborn weed finally gave up. Dirt clumps went everywhere, with one getting stuck in Notch’s hair. He huffed and threw the plant as hard as he could, which unfortunately didn’t go very far because of how light it was. Trying not to laugh, Auger walked over and helped him stand back up.

Notch brushed his fur off, refusing to look at Auger, which was probably for the best since he was fairly certain that he would crack and start laughing. Instead, Auger turned back to their fellow worker.

“How’s it going over there?” Auger asked. “I think it might be time to put Monte to work soon.”

Notch had been the one to speak up first, introducing everyone that was already working, including the horse that had been brought along to do some of the more heavy lifting. It made sense. There was so much to this place that would need to be cleared if they were going to make paths along their territory. It would certainly make traveling through it that much easier than having to weave their best way around.

"Pleasure. I'm Dahlia."

There wasn't much need for conversation when all of them had a task that needed to be taken care of. There were plenty of smaller things in the way, fallen sticks and branches, some roots, plants, and the dirt didn't exactly show a completely clear path. She had begun working on clearing some of the fallen items from the trees above them, either tossing them to the side or gathering them up together. It seemed she had a similar idea of keeping some of the smaller ones to use for their fires.

They would need plenty if the track record with the members of the Cartel had meant anything.

Green gaze fell on Notch as he was pulling something up, only for him to fall over. She couldn't help but chuckle at the sight before she had turned her focus on getting back to the clearing.

It wasn't until Auger had spoke up that she moved her head back up, a bundle of sticks tucked under her arm. He had suggested that it might have been time to get the horse to work with clearing some of the path. She set the gathered bundle to the side of the trail, along with some other ones she had made before pacing over to him, "It does seem like we are getting to that point. Not much smaller things to brush aside. How long does this trail go for? Anything else that might need to be cleared with Monte?"

While talking with Dahlia, Auger could hear Notch grumbling at the stubborn weed, and then he kicked it, although that sent it flying no further than throwing it had.

"This path goes all the way to the lake," Auger said, pointing that direction. "It seems like it was made by deer winding around the trees, so I figured it was a good spot to clear since it was already started." He figured the deer would probably start using a different trail to get to the lake after this one started smelling strongly of Luperci. As he spoke, Auger gathered a bundle of brush into his arms to move off of the trail and he managed a glance over at Notch without laughing. Notch had gotten back to work as Auger spoke, this time collecting a few loose sticks rather than trying to uproot another plant right away.

"There are a couple of downed trees that I'll use him to pull out of the way when we get closer to the lake." The deer had either gone over or around those, but Auger didn't want their trail to do that much meandering when he and his horse could clear the path with relative ease. "The wood from that might be good to bring back and use for fires." A lot of the brush wasn't good for that because it would burn quickly and produce a lot of smoke, but not much heat. The tree was a different story, especially once it died out.

"Maybe Monte will have better luck at pulling plants out," Notch grumbled, heading towards the horse. He clicked his tongue to draw his attention and Auger headed over as well. They had a length of rope to stretch from Monte to whatever they were pulling out, so Auger started by tying it to the base of a dead plant.

"Here we go," Auger said, giving Monte the signal to pull. The horse did and the rope went taught as he strained against the roots until the plant came free, bringing dirt and some other brush with it.

"Much better," Notch said, going to untie the rope. "Which should we do next?" It was an open question for either of them to answer.

It had been interesting to hear that the path both of them were working on was a naturally made one. Granted, since they were new to here, and it would take time for the luperci to make a path on their own, it was smarter to work with one that was already here. Their prey would learn to move, and it turn, that would just help to make some more new paths down the road. Either way, it was lucky they had at least one to start out with.

The downed trees would be no trouble when they had a horse that could help move them. The gray coyote gave a nod to Auger's suggestion, "Yes, I agree. There is no point in just moving it when we can also use it for our own stocks. It'll be killing two birds with one stone." Given how new the Gang was, the better they could build up their own goods, the better off they would be down the line.

Especially when the harsher times of the year came to pass.

Dahlia couldn't help but give a small roll of her eyes, followed by a grin when Notch had complained about the plant he had been messing with, only to grab the horse for its help with removing it. Following along after the two men, she stood to the side, watching them as they worked. It had been mostly in part due to her lack of experience when it came to horses, but this was also a good time for her to watch and learn.

Monte began to move, and with enough patience, the plant came free of the earth that had been holding it down. While Notch worked with the rope, her head turned towards the path, her eyes gazing down towards the way to the water's edge, "Let's keep clearing that way. There's bound to be more up that way as we get closer to the water. We can clear the smaller stuff as we walk."

If you want to end this here we can. We should have enough for the co-rank. +300 words.
