OOC -Dated for the Late-Afternoon of 31st of August

Through this magnifying glass, I see a thousand finger prints on the surfaces of who I am.

The day had been an important one for Cedric so far, but his duty to the pack wasn't over this cycle of the sun. The man had the proud duty of watching over the first fight of Starlight and Temnota. Both young members had seen Cedric for a lesson or two, and so the Stryder was looking forward to see how they performed for this battle. The end of the month proved to bring a lot of pressure to Cedric, but the man had glowed in the new duties. He'd told both Starlight and Temnota about the upcoming duel, letting them know of their opponent, and where to meet the Guardsman during the next afternoon. Cedric arrived an hour early, glancing to the sun as it began it's dip into the horizon, and checked over the training ring. Cedric brushed the sand flat, carving a large ring in the centre to contain the duel, glancing as a few faces arrived to investigate what was going to happen. Some remained, eager to see the youngster's prove themselves, others continued their own daily tasks.

With the stage of battle prepared, Cedric awaited the pair of yearlings, standing tall with his cloak, shield and sword all adorning his white coat. As they made their way to the ring, Cedric gave both a respectable bow of his head, gesturing for Starlight to take place on one side of the ring, and Temnota on the other. A small crowd gathered, the convenience of the battle taking place in the Fort and the need to see the next line of cavaliers test their skills. Cedric gave a few faces a glance, but his golden eyes focused most of all on the Hushhowl children. "Starlight, Temnota... This afternoon is the battle of your First Blood." Cedric announced, "You will fight in the ring," Cedric gestured to the ring in the sand he'd carved out, "And the first to land three hits on their opponent wins. Fight fair, do not aim to deal serious harm or hit the groin, but fight with passion."

The rules done, Cedric gave both the youngster's a small smile, "Good luck to both of you, may this battle be begin!"

This was the worst thing, and he didn't want to do this. There had been no sleep for the Hushhowl son the night before, and deep into the night Pushok had worked with him, and this he clung to as a drowning man clung to driftwood. His brother wouldn't steer him wrong. If.. if he could just survive this then, he would find some way to make it all better.

Tem's teeth chattered together, as he walked to meet with Cedric and Starlight. There were some waiting already to watch the two youths pit their knowledge together, and his throat constricted ever tighter. Oh, oh, Honrin was there too, and бабушка, the older woman leaning against her staff. Naya too, with the little children in her arms. He swallowed heavily.

He didn't see Veri? Where was she? Had she given up on him?

Little could still the drumming of his hummingbird heart. He would not disgrace himself by crying today, that would come later, afterwards. When he was alone.

He could still feel the touch of his father's hand upon his shoulder, the squeeze of fingers. That warmth gave him courage, the courage to at least approach this farce with his head high, in spite of shaking hands.

Cedric's words washed over him, a plethora of noise that sunk into the void behind Tem's mismatched eyes. He looked at his cousin-sister, who stared back at him determined and fierce.

Drawing in a deep breath, Tem reminded himself that he was Darkness Hushhowl too, and if his Oтец could survive the things he had done in his life, then Temnota would survive this.

Begin!

The time for thinking was gone, and Starlight was moving, faster than he had anticipated. Tem was still struggling with the idea of actually attacking a family member, Star had no hesitations.

Tem brought up the sword, held in his right hand as instructed by Pushok, and brandished it protectively. An acceptable movement for one wielding a great sword.

Tem was not using a great sword.

The sharp, slicing pain was like fire and ice thrown at him. It's shock reverberating through him. Tem withdrew with a gasp, blood seeping from his dark fur, and again tried to ward her off with a wave of the sword.

Her lean body practically trembled with excitement - perhaps fear too, but she'd kill anyone who dared to suggest it. Today was her big day, the one she'd been preparing herself for for months. She'd practiced all she knew to practice. She'd taken advice from her parents, mentors, aunts and uncles... all of their tutelage would amount to this day.

When she'd heard she'd be versing against her uncle, at first she'd grown a little sheepish. After all, this was her flesh and blood. She'd quickly quelled such thoughts as she quickly realized that no matter who she'd been pitted up against, they would have had to have been a relative. It was just her and her brother and their uncles this round, after all.

They gathered in the training ring. The two dark Hushhowls standing facing one another as the pale Stryder called out their instructions. They were swiftly surrounded by all manner of family and friends. Out of the corner of her eye, Star ignored her russet uncle leaning over the fence.

Star didn't watch Tem's face. She didn't see the fear or the threat of tears. Perhaps if she had, this all would have gone down differently.

Instead, she watched his hands fiddling, his feet placing themselves in their battle stance. She read his body so much, she forgot to read his emotions. She wouldn't hold back with her reputation at stake - her future. Even if it meant him losing his.

Like an arrow loosed from a bow, she sprung at the call. Her silver blade - a true blade for once - shone harshly in her hands. She easily knocked Tem's back as he tried to deflect her blow and landed him a shallow nick on his sword arm. Deeper, and in a more serious fight, she could have incapacitated a dominant-hand-dependent opponent.

Star pulled back and waited for the point to be called before she decided to rest in the offensive. After all, this was a display. She needed to prove she was capable in both forms.

OOC -Dated for the Late-Afternoon of 31st of August

Through this magnifying glass, I see a thousand finger prints on the surfaces of who I am.

No words were uttered between the blood-tied pair as they took up position. Cedric wouldn't judge their silence, assuming the young Cavaliers were too focused on the task ahead to give each other words of encouragement, the likes that Cedric and Naya had called at each other when they'd faced their future. There was a tension in the air, like a trouble brewing on the winds that had Cedric wishing to hold his shield arm closer, but he tried to remain unflinching and unnerved by whatever emotions were brewing in the close atmosphere.

As the newly announced Sworn called for the battle to begin, Cedric's golden eyes bore deep into the positions of Star and Temnota, seeing if he could predict who would get the first strike in. It wasn't a hard guess to make. Immediately, the Stryder could see faults in Temnota's stance, from how he held his sword to how he stood. It confused Cedric, considering he himself had trained with the boy and seen him strive when wielding a shield. Temnota's confidence had grown as the pair trained, but clearly since then it had been stunted by something. With such a poor stance, Star was almost free to get her first hit in. A flash of instinct made Cedric flinch, his protective instinct kicking in to keep the boy from a harm he wasn't prepared for. But the Stryder stood still, watching as Star made a shallow cut on Tem's shoulder. The control of her attack caused Cedric to relax, pleased to know his niece showed good skill with her sword. Considering how aggressive Cedric had seen her get in training, it was good to know Star also knew how to hold back.

The success on Star's end however was lost for Temnota. Cedric's face dropped into a frown as the boy retaliated as if trying to swat a fly, not use a sword. He'd lost the first point, and thus far hadn't shown any skill for the Sworn to praise. Unless the young Temnota found his stride, Cedric had a bad feeling about how this would end for the boy.

The knowledge curled deeply into his very soul. A glimpse away showed him the deep furrows on Cedric's face, and this too set his heart racing again. The weight of their stares, all of them watching him and judging. He could almost hear the whispers and they circled him, a dominating force that clouded what little attention he'd managed to wrest for himself.

Breaths came like rushing water, hard and fast, and shallow.

Panic clawed at his throat, it was too much, and Temnota knew the crushing suffering of their expectations.

It was a point for Starlight, undoubtedly, and Temnota hung his head briefly.

To his credit, he did not cower away from the pain and nor did he shrink from the challenge even as it threatened to shake him all to pieces. But Tem couldn't see this, only the endless shame.

Wanting it to simply be over, he took a large breath and as soon as Cedric indicated he leapt forwards, bringing about his sword in a haphazard manner, in any attempt to prove that he was worth at least something.

He aimed for her midriff, rightly assessing that it'd be easier to catch, but again hampered by the bad advice and his own inadequacy.
