Brocade was surprised that it had been Symre who had found the Emissary and explained her exploration of the coyote clan. It would seem that they had founded a new clan, one that lay somewhere north of the Kingdom and was led by two young men. It had taken Brocade a few days to arrange for supplies, and to discuss the journey with Morgana. She listened in that coy way of hers, toying with the hem of her dress before agreeing to it – and at the break of dawn on the day they had chosen to leave she stood on her tiptoes to kiss him and wish him luck.

Tonnerre was patient as Brocade adjusted the many straps and bags that decorated his haunches. One side of the horse was hung with spears, the silver flashing like keen teeth each time he adjusted his weight. There was food and water, a flagon of wine – and a small fire starter that Morgana had insisted he take with him. Once everything had been checked the Director mounted, clucking his tongue to urge the horse forward.

The soldier collected Kamari near her home, and together they set off towards the borders of the nefarious coyote folk.

It was a journey that took time, and so it was that they chatted – filling each other in on the Barracks completion and the summer trade that so often came with the season. He did not mention Krios, nor the recent discovery of him in the Tavern with his hands full of an unknown woman – his eyes bleary with drink.

The pair stopped infrequently, sharing water or a piece of bread. The shadows grew longer as they found the base of the burnt church mountains. Brocade grunted softly as Tonnerre moved around a mossy log, and as the afternoon grew late so did the light that began to struggle to perforate through the tree tops. Brocade hummed softly to himself and pulled on the horses reigns to have him stop. Leather creaked and groaned as he dropped from the animals back, and The Director flared his nostrils against the breeze.

”We must be close.” He glanced at Kamari and dipped his head, ”Shall we continue on foot?”

Optime | Near Del Cenere Gang’s northern borders | NPC: Cedar (+638)

Thanks for starting<333 Kamari’s scent is disguised.

When news had reached her that the Clan had essentially risen from its ashes, Kamari had not been overly surprised. After all, they had been allied to Salsola once upon a time, one of few to ever be able to make such a claim, and the Kingdom was not a place for weakness, not amongst its members or its allies. They called themselves the Del Cenere Gang, and apparently had sought refuge in a place near the Burnt Church Mountains. It was an interesting choice, and Kamari wondered if the new territory so far west had been chosen purposely compared to the two eastern locations that Inferni had once occupied.

A pair of young males ran the outfit according to Symre, and the Emissary was curious to know if either or both had participated during the Inferni-Salsolan War or had a brooding hatred for the Kingdom. If so, the new pack could pose a threat to Salsola.

The Director had been the one to devise a scouting mission, if only to get an idea of this new power in the realm. Kamari had gathered her usual traveling supplies and extra weaponry, and packed them away into Cedar’s saddlebags. With a brief word to her husband, she departed from their home at Brocade’s arrival. The journey northwest was easy enough despite the time it took to reach the location described by Symre. It was as they passed major waterways that Kamari realized that the Gang had chosen a location near to where Krokar had once laid claim.

With only a sliver of daylight left to luminate the sky, Brocade finally brought their horses to a stop. Kamari remained seated, cornflower blue eyes watchful and attentive to whatever his directive would be with this pause in their journey. She sniffed the air, catching the faint smell of a group scent; one that smelt heavily of coyote. Her senses sharpened instantly at the realization.

They were close. The main border was not far from them now.

To Brocade’s suggestion, Kamari gave a curt nod. “We’ll be less likely to be detected that way.” Swinging out of her saddle, her feet landed softly on the dark soil below. She made sure to check to make sure all of her saddlebags were secure and tight on Cedar lest he need to run for whatever reason. A whispered command made sure the horse would not wander unless summoned otherwise.

She let a hand glide over the fletching of her arrows sticking out of her hip quiver, her sharp eyes turning onto Brocade. “Let’s follow the border away from the mountains,” she suggested. Climbing and navigating the steep mountainside would have been dangerous in the dark, particularly when they were unfamiliar with the territory. As well, Kamari felt that it would be of better benefit if they managed to see how far the Gang stretched on relatively level land.

They traveled along in the growing darkness, lingering far enough that they could easily dodge a patrol if they happened across one. They were close enough, however, to still make out the scent of the new pack and make sure they didn’t wander too far off course. Kamari was sure to silence her quiver, and her steps were light as she made her way through the forested terrain. She moved with the grace of a shadow, her tall ears twitching at the sound of nightfall that reached them.

At some point, Kamari’s pace slowed, lingering and angling her head in a way that indicated she was about to speak. Do you think they’ll be a threat to us, Bastian? She whispered out in French, using his alias. They had yet to run across a patrol, though, that didn’t mean that they wouldn’t any time soon.

The work was familiar. Each time Brocade set his foot upon the path they chose he was surprise at how easily he fell back into the role of a solider; constantly checking his corners and assuring that Kamari was close enough to be communicated with in silence. The Director spent a moment looping his reigns over the horn of his saddle and ensuring that the straps were in place around the animals middle. Tonnerre stood still as he completed his walk about, and with a sharp pat to his shoulder the horse dropped his head and made to graze.

The horses flared their nostrils as their masters disappeared into the din, and Brocade cast only a final glance before chuffing softly at Kamari.

Their mission would take them away from the shadow of the mountain, and he nodded his agreement as they silently slid through the trees. ”Excellent.” He tipped his head and glanced towards the darkening sky, ”We have some daylight left.” He grinned wide enough to show his teeth, ”Let’s use what we can.”

They travelled as the sunlight slowly disappeared, leaving the sky with streaks of gold and vibrant purple. Clouds passed overhead in brilliant puffs of white before being whisked away to reveal a grape-dark sky that was prepared to cast them in shadow.

He flagged his tail and listened as the forest went silent around them, the chirping birds and lazy whirring of bugs finally disappearing into silence. The little jackal was fleet footed and barely made a sound as she pushed on passed the larger wolf, though when she spoke in his mother tongue he paused to mull over her words.

<”Not if we’re careful.”> He adjusted the strap of his pack and hung a hand against his dagger, as he pointed with his nose <”There’s something up ahead.”>

I figure they can find one of the scarecrows! :D

Can do! Found one of the effigies.

Their fleeting presence on the Del Cenere Gang’s border that night was only one of many sorties. It was easy to fall back into their usual routine. They skulked about, leaving their presence to be minimal and mundane should their trails be found hours afterwards. Their scents disguised, it would have appeared like little more than two Loners scoping out the boundaries. Normal. Of little threat when unable to be connected to anything else. They worked in complete silence for a time, their minds sharp and senses sharper as they traversed the ever-darkening terrain.

Her eyes flicked to her larger companion when he replied, a smirk curling on the edge of her lips. Be careful then. She turned her gaze towards the dark silhouette that he’d gestured to and slowed her pace further. Without taking her eyes off of it, she arched wide as she tipped her thin muzzle to a soft, rolling breeze that flittered by. While the coyotes’ urine markers were pungent in her nose, she couldn’t make out anything new or alive in the area. Her tall ears twitched from where they stood out from the hood of her cloak, also finding little to indicate that the thing they were approaching was a living, breathing threat.

When she drew close to it, she did so cautiously lest she’d been duped by a clever Luperci. The darkness made details hard to make out from a distance—and even up close—after all. It hadn’t moved, and it didn’t look like it was going to either.

If there had been any doubt in her mind on where the coyotes of this new pack might have come from, the sight of the thing before her had confirmed it without doubt.

Had she been a more skittish or easily frightened soul, coming across something like it on a hazy, dark night would have sent her running in the opposite direction. It looked like an artistic take on mimicking a Luperci. An antlered deer skull hung from the tall, cross-like post in the ground, and the remains of a ribcage had been strung up with twine beneath it. A long-tailed, tattered blouse had been draped across the “arms” of the post, giving the mix-matched skeleton some modesty in its lonely vigil on the pack’s established border.

Kamari let out a sharp exhale as her stance relaxed a little, eyes still searching the immediate area to ensure there weren’t any patrolmen nearby. Looks like they took a page from the Clan’s book, she told Brocade, a hand resting on her hip while she gestured to the effigy with the other.
