Word Count → 386 :: Spooky thread for Spooktober! :D

This Fall was beginning unlike any Fall Greed had experienced before. There was an eerie chill in the air that accompanied the thick fog that rolled out over the territory like a ghostly blanket. Since it arrived, Greed tried to avoid it. This was becoming increasingly difficult as the mornings and evenings grew longer and colder, keeping the fog around longer.

Despite the chill it spent down his spine, Greed was oddly intrigued by this phenomena.

Amber hues peeked out a paneless window. Not much could be seen beyond a few feet. The fog lack any sense of boundaries and rolled itself into carpets along the dirt roads that sprawled throughout The Ruins. While Greed traveled through this fog before, the fact that it stuck around was perplexing. The only thing that made this happening useful, was the cover it provided for prey animals, thus lulling them into a false sense of security; Or so Greed thought. The curiosity in the truth behind this caused the Associate to stir inside the old, half underground home.

Greed donned his new cloak and one of the few outfits he'd come here with, and made his entrance into the spectral landscape. He was not unarmed, with his bow strapped across his shoulder and his quiver on his back. He traveled on foot today, making his way into the orchard that sat on Salsola's territory. His hunt began, bow drawn with no arrow readied until necessary. The air was still and frighteningly quiet. Greed reserved this eerie silence, hoping he would come across an animal foolish enough to wander into the Thistle Kingdom.

Somehow, despite the morning light, Greed felt blind; His hackles stood on end and he couldn't help but smile at himself for acting so fearful. There was nothing more to this fog than what met the eye.

Screeeeeeeeee. Crash! Thump. Flap, flap, flap.

Birds flew overhead, away from this alarming noise. Without a thought, Greed turned and rushed away from it as well. He now had knocked an arrow and was fully prepared for something threatening to emerge from the fog behind him. His first thought was that a tree had fallen, but he'd heard that before and this was different. Something was nearby and he didn't imagine it to be pleasant.

I am so sorry for the wait! I was in a super busy part of my schedule!

The mornings were darker and darker when the young Ulrich woman rose from her slumber. It was growing increasingly more difficult to get anything done during the daylight hours as the days were much shorter as the sun barely crept up over the horizon. The agouti female had hardly remembered the shorter days from the previous year because she had been too young to do so, but now that she had chores to get done during the day she found herself rising before the sun and going to bed well after it had set. What made getting her chores done even more difficult was the fact that this strange fog had been rolling in during the last few days, growing thicker and thicker which each passing evening and not dissipating completely until almost high noon.

Swinging her cloak over her shoulders, Evelyn clasped it tight to fight out the cool chill settling. Frost had dampened the grass in the morning making it quite chill, but one could nearly swear it was summer by midday. The woman made her way out of the old church and down the steps into the cool, early morning fog. Gripping the small dagger on her hip the girl could not help but suppress a chill that had crept up her spine as she looked around, barely being able to see more than a few feet in front of her. Having grown up within the Thistle Kingdom and spending nearly every day within its boundaries, Evelyn knew the area like the back of her hand even if the fog made it difficult to see more than a few tail lengths in front of her at the moment.

It did not take but a second to decide on a direction and follow it for some time, it had felt like eons had passed as she carefully made her way through the territory unsure of what to do with the morning. Perhaps she should show up at the barn and hope that someone would require a hand with the horses. Nothing made her feel more accomplished than aiding with the creatures of the kingdom during the day. She had hoped one day to claim a job of some sorts within the barn that would keep her close to her four-legged companions. Her thoughts were quickly disturbed as the loud crash of... maybe a falling tree caught her attention? Gulping, she crept forward, wondering exactly what could be out at this ungodly hour. Hackles raising and a snarl lifting her lips to show her pearly whites. Eve unsheathed the dagger at her side, creeping forward quietly as a mouse through the soft, loamy forest floor.

Ahead, a shadow caught her eye, and the sound of beating wings took off into the air leaving the girl feeling wild and confused about the shadow that approached through the mist. Covering the ground in a few quick steps Eve was ready to attack but stopped just short as she saw the unfamiliar appearance of another wolf that smelled only slightly of Salsola proper. Unsure if this male was one of them or not at the moment she bit out a quick question, "Who are you and what are you doing within the Kingdom?" Poised, and ready to fly, the young girl awaited his response.

Word Count → 386 :: No worries man!

After the frantic flutter of birds overhead, the kingdom fell quiet once again. The fog wrapped around him, whipping in tides around his form as he quickly walked through the orchard. Eventually, his pace slowed and he observed his surroundings, ears erect on his head awaiting any hint of trouble in his surroundings. All he could hear, was his own footsteps, the thumping of his heart, and the gentle sway of the trees above.

Thud.

The Associate spun around, raising his arrow in the direction of the new startling sound. The grass crinkled lightly as something rolled in his direction and amber hues followed the sound until the object stopped at his feet. Greed couldn't help the upturning of his lips at the sight of an apple.

His hackles rose as a soft voice penetrated his ears and he spun back around to face the young Luperci that had snuck up on him. His bow was lifted instinctively, but then quickly lowered as his eyes came to rest on the earthy toned woman. She held a dagger and was clearly startled by him as well. The arrow was separated from the bow and placed back in his quiver. His free hand was then held up in a disarming fashion.

Greed Lykoi, Associate. He began, stating his rank to assume his right to be within the Kingdom. I was planning a hunt. I didn't mean to startle you. My apologies Miss. His posture was relaxed, submissive, before the stranger who was clearly a more distinguished Salsolan than he. He couldn't help but to admire her delicate, young, features, although he did so in a inconspicuous manner. She barely looked a year old and an angry superior was the last thing Greed needed to halt his progress towards obtaining access into the Family.

Blue eyes shot to the apple that had startled the male and had him spinning as she rounded a tree and approached him quickly and quietly. His arrow point swung around to face her, but he quickly realized his mistake and dropped it, sheath the arrow back into the quiver and throwing his hands up. Evelyn watched, waiting for him to speak as they clearly had both been spooked by something within the mist. It was still nagging at the back of her mind, but her attention was squarely on the male before her.

Now that she was much closer to him she could start to smell the normal scents of Salsola intermingling with the scents outside of the borders giving way to maybe perhaps this was a new recruit. There were not too many new faces that popped up within the Thistle Kingdom, so she knew she was right to be suspicious. He quickly spit out his name and rank, clearly showing respect to her only slightly higher rank. Relaxing and sheathing the dagger into its home at her thigh the girl let the hackles on the back of her neck relax, although she still felt on edge because this was not the noise she had originally been hunting.

"I'm sorry to startle you then, Associate Greed," she gave an apologetic smile, rare for Salsolan's. "Evelyn de le Ulrich. Confidant." In respect, the girl stated her own name and rank, eyes turning to the forests around them. "I was hunting something, although I must admit, it has been a bit difficult with the mist muffling sounds and dampening the scents around here," she said, crossing her arms across her bosom, suppressing the chill that was slowly climbing up her spine with the wisps of mist that heralded the darkness of the night.

"A hunt?" she gave a cheeky grin to the earthy toned coyote, hunting was her specialty, well at least she was trying to hone those skills. Maybe she could learn a thing or two from the male before her. "Let's see if we can flush out whatever is roaming these woods then?" she asked, emboldened with the silliness of the situation of the pair startling each other. She quirked a brow to the male and put her hand out before her in gesture for him to lead the way, she wanted to watch him and perhaps studying a stranger would give her some advantage to honing her own skills as a hunter.

Word Count → 386 :: No worries man!

When it was clear the woman no longer saw him as a threat, Greed allowed his characteristic charming grin to slide smoothly across his dark lips. He placed the arrow that he had knocked back into its quiver upon his back. Whatever made that noise could not have come from this woman. It was much too...off putting, disruptive, chill inducing. Of course, it might just be the season and the creeping fog that had them reading more into the sound.

The woman apologized, smiling kindly along with her apology. Another lucky encounter within the Thistle Kingdom. Surely he was blessed by some greater power to be so lucky this far. Near moments after that thought, his encounter with Shaamah disrupted his thoughts. Maybe he wasn't entirely too lucky.

A name was given, a beautiful one to match a gorgeous girl. Greed's smile cooled to a simmer as he dipped his head in a civilized manner. Very nice to meet you Evelyn. In meeting a new pack mate, Greed let the anxiety slip his thoughts for the meantime. At the mention of a hunt, the young Ulrich grinned in a way that could mean only one thing. She was intrigued by the prospect of a hunt. Yes. He confirmed, just before Evelyn spoke up again, redirecting their energies to finding whatever it was that spooked them both. She motioned for him to lead, and with the excited dip of his head Greed took the first few steps into the fog and the unknown.

Well, he had been going the opposite direction of whatever that sound was. It seemed Evelyn was doing entirely the opposite. She couldn't know he had actually been running from the sound. So, he would lead them with vigor straight towards it now. I saw the birds flying, that way. He pointed to their right. Away from whatever that awful sound was. If we keep going in this direction, we are sure to find something. Amber hues scanned the ground, looking for clues. Of course, it was impossible to find the clues until he was directly upon them which raised cause for some concern. Stay alert, this fog is certainly unhelpful in our hunt.

As they moved forward, the air seemed to grow ever more still. No birds sang or flew overhead. Whatever they were approaching, was getting closer. Greed stopped when he noticed something on a nearby tree. The coyote knelt and inspected the tree's hide. There were several gouges in its flesh and scrapes. Careful. He urged, as he moved forward some, coming to stand before a young apple tree that had been pummeled over by an unknown force. Greed turned to Evelyn, lifting a brow inquisitively. Well, whatever made that sound was clearly not happy. Tread lightly. He suggested again, possibly more alert and on edge than his younger companion.

The fog was thick, and the sounds were distorted in the wood between the trees and the thick mist that had been creeping over the lands in the evening, engulfing the Thistle Kingdom in a choking blanket that muffled sounds and skewed them as they traveled. Just as quickly as it came at night, it dispersed in the morning sun, although on cloudier days it seemed to hang around a little longer than she liked. It was difficult to get anything done in it other than to tend to the horses in the barn where she was sheltered from whatever crept around using the reduced visibility to their advantage.

Greed appeared to have calmed the anxiety that was flowing through them both for a moment as Evelyn's own worries eased having another by her side helped that. They would hunt whatever it was, although she had been a little oblivious that he had been running away from the sound. It was difficult to tell as it seemed to echo around them. It did not seem to stop the male though as Greed took the lead and Evelyn stuck close on his tail as they padded through the woods keeping all of their senses to guide them and their wits sharp as they could be.

Evelyn nodded, her bright blue eyes darting back and forth, ears pricked and turning towards sounds that all of a sudden drew to an eerie silence. He urged her to be careful again as they both knelt down to examine the claw markings that were ripped through the bark of the tree, revealing the soft wood beneath. They moved farther into the thick fog before coming upon what had been an apple tree from the sweet scents that came from the ground around them. Something had been big enough and strong enough to topple it over. Evelyn was worried for a moment that the pair may not be enough to face whatever this demon crashing through the forest was.

The young Ulrich was sure to keep her footsteps light as she made her way behind him, hoping to stay as quiet as possible so they did not alert whatever had been through the forest not a few moments prior of their position. She felt like she was holding her breath, awaiting whatever was to come as she followed behind Greed. The fur along her neck prickling with dread as a chill crept down her spine.
