➤ Scout Group 1 Prompt: THE WHITE KNELL CAMP

Party Leader: Idrieus

Party Participants: Andrew, Varda, Evelyn

The Erilaz has enlisted you in one of two scouting parties heading east from Salsola's border. There have been a few reports of strange Outsider activity in the area, and something about O'Riley's intense - borderline fanatic - energy has suggested to you that this scouting assignment is not as simple as it seems.

Inquisitor Idrieus is leading your expedition. In a small grove of yellow birches, your party uncovers a camp of what appears to be somewhere between 4 and 6 loners. Over the course of your stakeout, you and your companions will notice the following:

  • There is a pale dog sitting near the campfire, throwing what appears to be rocks into the flames. After she does so, the flames momentarily turn a dazzling indigo blue, and the air smells rusty.
  • Two of the older Outsiders are having a discreet conversation at the back of the campsite. They appear to be arguing. The female is holding something shiny in her hands. The male points accusingly at the other side of the camp.
  • A woman bundled in rags is sitting by a rough-hewn shelter. She has something swaddled in her arms, and is rocking it and murmuring to it. She appears to be what the couple are arguing about.
Make sure to remain hidden. When you have seen enough, report back to the kingdom with great haste.

I will scream them loud tonight
Can you hear my voice this time?

Idrieus couldn't help but be a bit surprised when she had been asked to head one of the scouting parties. It was no shock that the Emissary would be leading one, but strange that the Striker was not taking head of the other one. Regardless, she could say she was much more content to have this task given to her than someone like Brocade, and giving her another chance to take hold of a group force, like she had done so in the past. She was not pleased that this news had turned up out of nowhere, especially after her promise to her soon to be mate, but work always came first.

The Paladin had waited patiently for the rest of her group to gather up with her. The once servant man, Andrew had been brought along with her, the now Proctor of the Thistle Kingdom. It was quite something that he had been able to rise as far as he had, but being the man that he was, she wasn't keen on having him there with her.

The other two females were lower in the ranks, but this would be a good opportunity for them to prove to Salsola of the skills they could either grow into or had under their belt.

The eastern border was calm, blue gaze lifted out along the path ahead of them. She had the information passed along from the Erilaz down to her, so she knew where they would be going. Night was closing in on them, and this would make traveling for them easier, and spotting them among the land around them harder. Eyes narrowed as she recalled what had been instructed by the High Inquisitor. Something had seemed a bit off about him... but there wasn't much of a chance to do anything but take the observation in. It wasn't like saying anything about how she truly felt would do her any good.

Head turned to her group, moving one hand along the rapier she had brought with her, "You all know the mission, we are here to scout, not cause any fight or confrontation. Stick close for the time being." With that, the dog woman turned on her feet, padding ahead of them further to the east.

It didn't take long to come to a collection of yellow birches. Slowing down the pace, her head turned to the others. Her hand moved down, showing them to keep low and keep their voices down. Taking the lead, the four of them came to the camp, but she had been wary, making sure they kept their distance. There was only so much that would be able to be seen at one angle. Turning her attention to the three, she pointed to Andrew, lowering her voice to a whisper, "Andrew, take one of them with you and circle to the other side. We need to be able to see from all angles."

The day had been one of celebration for Evelyn and her brother as it had been their first birthday. They had wrapped up the celebrations early as Evelyn had to meet with the scouting group for more serious matters that pertained to the pack. This was how she would prove herself to the pack, she was not the greatest fighter, but she was quick and silent on her feet and therefore could lend her ears to scout out what these canines were doing in the area. When she had heard about the scouting parties she had offered up her limited skills.

The group met at dusk, Evelyn had spent the afternoon preparing herself, with her new bow slung over her back and a quiver full of arrows hidden by her large, dark fur cloak, she made her way silently out from the church grounds to find the meeting point where Idrieus had told them to meet. Evelyn had not met the woman in any other manner but a formal meeting, but she had heard a little about her from Grievous who was to be wed to her. Evelyn had been taken under his wing and hoped to further her eductions in regards to the pack's horses and improve her riding skills with his help.

It did not take long for her to cover the ground between home and the meeting spot, Idrieus had already arrived, and Evelyn had thought she might have been a little early, but the older warrior had already beat her there. Offering a small nod, her face set with a flat affect, the young woman came to heel at her side. Her ears pricked as Idreius started to speak of the plan, and Evelyn nodded, her eyes flickering over to the other pair that had joined them soon after.

"I will stick with you?" Evelyn asked her voice barely a whisper that would have been taken by the winds and inaudible to anyone more than a few tail lengths away from her. She paused, waiting to follow the woman's direction, as this was completely new to her, but one thing was for sure, she knew how to be quiet. All of her days spent practicing her hunting had lead to this moment, as she had perfected her silence within the woods to a mastery not normal of one her age. Whatever direction Idrieus pointed her in, she would follow without question.

She arrived at the signalled hour just moments after the tan Ulrich daughter had made her appearance. Their greetings were brief and the Blacksun heiress didn’t add much in regards of small-talk before they moved on toward their objective. Her focus was split between keeping her large form concealed from the eyes of their enemies while also listening to and observing those who made up their scouting party.

Luck had blessed her with the chance to work under two prominent figures of their society and she would be a fool not to take the chance to make herself known to them under the most favourable light possible. A dutiful front and an useful skillset ought to at least put her in the good graces of their Paladin. She was known to be stern and opinionated, a hard individual to handle if you were careless with your wording. Varda had dealt with such strong personalities before and knew to keep her head down and show her worth through actions and not meaningless words.

Her heartbeat hurried in her chest as they came closer to the Outlaws encampment. She steadied her breathing and forced herself to be silent in spite of the surge of adrenaline that came with the notion of danger.

She could already smell them, the Outsiders who had foolishly taken residence so close to their borders. There was no way of disguising the presence of such a large number of canines. Where they truly this oblivious or had this decision been made blatantly out of defiance? These and many more questions pestered her thoughts but the Blacksun heiress didn’t voice any of them. It wouldn’t be wise to hinder the mission with her intrusive questions. The crown had its reasons, and she was still too far below on the hierarchy to make her opinions and doubts known. If only she had known that the Paladin harboured similar queries.

She waited for the pairs to be decided upon by their superiors and nodded once they had been chosen. She had no qualm with accompanying the mottled warrior or the Greygrief Lord, her attention now would have to remain on the objectives they were to spy on and her own carefully placed steps in order to keep her large presence hidden. It went without saying that for all the advantages that size brought the women of her House stealth wasn’t one of them. They required greater care during similar enterprises or hunts to ensure that they weren’t spotted before the right time. Luckily Kaeli’s training had been extensive and the natural camouflage of Varda’s dark pelt was ideal for the darker hours.

The me that you know is now made up of wires

Once had been a time when Andrew would believe a task such as this to be an honor. However, he found himself uncertain. Duty was a weighted chain, but the rule of law always won. His will had never truly been his own.

There was no denying their mission was in capable hands. The Paladin was seasoned, a long time member of the shield and well versed in her trade. So too was Varda, who took after her bearlike mother who struck fear in hearts of weaker men and women alike. He trusted all who represented the Blacksun name would be tested in combat -- and while engagement was strictly against their orders, having one as battletested as she was good to have around should the need arise.

The Ulrich child, however, was unproven. No more than a youth, the Proctor was unsure that this was the proper place for her. This was a dangerous game. An adult's game. Yet, Andrew was certain if she followed the Paladin's orders, she would be fine.

Downwind from the outsider camp, they made their rendezvous. They spoke in hushed voices, formulating a plan. Observe; see without being seen in turn. It was easier said than done, but not impossible. "Aye then," Andrew answered in a whisper. "Varda, with me."

He nodded to Idrieus in affirmation of her plan, then motioned for the blacksun woman to accompany him as he began to silently creep in a wide circle around the camp, hidden from view.

OOC: I think I fixed the small goof up from the first post. Lemme know if I still need to fix it Hydra. +300 words.

The crown seemed to imply that those there were observing were dangerous, and in connection were what might have caused the curse that would have come down on all of them. Was it even really worth speaking of the curse as if it were new news? So much time had passed, and only now did they have their targets. Even on first glance, it didn't seem like there was anything out of the ordinary when it came to this camp.

All the better reason to make sure they were looking at this situation from all angles.

Blue gaze trailed over to the youngest member of their bunch, having decided that she would stick with the dog woman, which would leave Andrew and Varda in their own pair. Perhaps it would be better this way. It wasn't that she had doubted the other two would be able to watch out for the tan girl or protect her if they were spotted, but probably better that she stayed with one that was the most seasoned.

After all, it was clear she wasn't too confident in her own skills. If it came to a stand, Idrieus would have no troubles holding off anyone that would seek to do her harm.

Not that those they were observing seemed like they would be ones to do such a thing.

The Paladin gave a nod to the latter pair, having herself and Evelyn stick to their original position until the second pair had split off from them. Her gaze followed their trail until they had disappeared into the darkness. Turning to the Ulrich girl, she tilted her head, "Stay close to me. Keep as quiet as you can."

Idrieus kept the two of them close to the front side of the camp, closer to their campfire and on some of the Outsiders. Eyes narrowed on the one that seemed to be closer to the fire, then soon turned to the one at her side. If anything, she could use this as a good test for someone that seemed to want to not only offer her service, but in some points along this path.

Lowering her head, she made a small gesture for her to observe, "Tell me what you see."

Evelyn watched the other pair of their scouting group as they departed from their place beside them. Evelyn felt safe with the larger, beautifully painted warrior beside her. The girl had been unsure of the other two as she had never met them in one on one conversations, and thus she had only seen them in formal gatherings of the pack. Just knowing the relation that Idrieus had with her mentor comforted her enough to feel a little more certain of her place here. Although, she doubted her skills now that she was in more experienced company. This was a time for her to prove herself, and her resolve grew with each beat of her heart.

The woman had paused for a moment as the other half of their party disappeared into the darkness, before she whispered to keep close, and keep quiet, both things Evelyn was confident she could do. Her eyes picked out the path before her, avoiding small twigs or particularly dried sets of leaves as she leaned her weight into each step, keeping it centered about herself when paused so as not to lose balance and fall over. They kept low, although this was easier for the smaller Ulrich, as they rounded the outskirts of the strange group of canines. Her eyes peaked through a particularly gnarled bush that had seen better days as the woman whispered beside her, asking her what she could see.

Her eyes drifted over the group: a couple was seen arguing, motioning towards a woman who sat with a bundled wrap in her arms, she seemed strange, but her attention was quickly shifted to the pale dog by the fire as the red flames quickly turned a harsh, cold blue before her. Evelyn's ears pricked as the snaps and crackles of the fire ate up whatever was thrown into it, changing it unnatural shades that she was not sure she was entirely seeing right. Quirking a brow, she kept her voice low, explaining what she was seeing.

"I don't know, maybe some kind of magic, the pale woman who resembles more of a dog than a wolf is motioning towards the fire, and each time she does the flames are turning from red to blue," she said, brows pinched together wondering if she was seeing this clearly. The girl did not doubt herself entirely though because even though it appeared to be witchcraft of some sort, there must have been some other explanation. From the whispers that wound their way through the Thistle Kingdom, it would not be strange to hear as they had burned one of their own. Pulling back, her eyes turned back to the couple arguing. "I see what appears to be a male and a female, arguing, although I can't quite hear what about, perhaps Varda and Proctor Andrew can determine that a little better," she added, eyes peering over to the last within the group of strange individuals.

"That woman there seems to have something in her arms, it is moving, perhaps a baby or a pet of some sorts?" she questioned, her eyes turning back up to the paladin. "They seem to be the only ones here, although I don't have the best view of the camp they have set up," she sighed, pulling back out of sight of the group. Maybe Idrieus would see a little better than she could and therefore gave up her position to the woman in case she wanted a second opinion on the matter. Varda and Andrew would definitely get a better view of the arguing pair and therefore, maybe some key information on what exactly they were doing so close to Salsola's borders.
