Breath, should I take a deep? Faith, should I take the leap?

She should not have been quite so upset over a rabbit, but she was. She should have tittered at the broken trap and moved on with her day, rather than choosing to utilize a seemingly harmless minor event to somehow improve her position. Instead of doing the smart, sensible thing, Kalypso decided that she would use the wasted time and energy spent making the trap and twist it to be useful in some other way instead.

But she was still pretty salty that something had broken her trap. Her hunting skills may have improved somewhat since she made the trek from the Caribbean to the frozen north, but it had never quite caught up to those that had been born and bred in the shifting seasons and silent wilds. Her kids were better at the hunting and trapping thing than she ever would be.

Kaly was nothing if not resourceful, though, and it felt so good to put her mind to a different use than moping about like a limp eel. She had heard the tidbits of information that folks mentioned in passing by and gathered them up like a greedy whale swallowing krill. The Warlord of the Cavaliers had defected and was no longer quite so knightly. An interesting twist that Kalypso could not ignore and avoid.

Besides, Kaly was quite good at coming up with excuses having had to counter plenty of them in her previous life.

Finding Teagan was not too hard, considering that she stood out as both different from the Caledonians and familiar to the former Queen of the Court. Trying not to annoy her was likely going to be a different matter.

Madam Stryder, what a surprise, she greeted pleasantly enough, smiling at the other woman. It was not a surprise, though, and Teagan probably knew that.

Optime | New Caledonia (+453)

It was different, New Caledonia. Teagan was still in the process of trying to fully grasp that the stay was not temporary. It wasn’t a diplomacy trip like she had done with Krokar. No, she and her family were there to live, permanently.

Genkei had been…reasonably difficult since they had been accepted to join the pack. The house they had chosen was different—and in sore need of repair if they were going to eventually claim it for their own—from what they had had in Fort Kingsbury. He had been apprenticed, only to have it be for naught. He had no friends besides his falcon and filly companions. He would come around though, or, so she hoped. In the meantime, he’d spent his time going through his sword drills, working with Treasach and Bacardi, and otherwise avoiding her.

She would have been lying if she had said her son’s sudden—though, warranted to some degree—indifference towards her had not bothered her in the slightest.

Teagan had decided to take a walk and better memorize the layout of her new home. She’d left the family’s temporary campsite dressed simply—a tunic, pants, and her cloak—though, was still accompanied by her sword. If she was to assimilate with her new packmates, it was probably for the best if she didn’t look like she was ready to engage in battle. To be weaponless though, the Stryder would not allow.

A familiar—but somehow, unfamiliar—voice suddenly disturbed her from her brooding, causing Teagan to halt. Cold, canary eyes sought the individual who had spoken to her, only to find, indeed, a vaguely familiar face. Rich, auburn hair; a neckline that was decorated in pretty trinkets; intelligent, ocean-blue eyes. Teagan’s brows furrowed as her brain tried to initially place where she’d seen the woman before.

Something flagged her as important, someone that was not to be attacked. The fogged memories recalled an event—maybe more?—one that was filled others, many others. Music, a murmuring din of voices, singing, dancing, food and alcohol.

“Reine Kalypso?” Could it really be? The last Queen of Cour des Miracles? The last interaction Teagan had had with Casa di Cavalieri’s old ally had been when Cidro had shown up at their borders utterly broken in the aftermath of the pack’s destruction.

Teagan turned fully towards the ex-Courtier and took a sniff. “How long ago did you join?” They had never held a formal conversation with one another, however, the Stryder was more open to the familiarity that the Savoy woman’s presence brought when compared to the other Caledonians she’d interacted with thus far.

Breath, should I take a deep? Faith, should I take the leap?

Kalypso watched as it took the former Warlord a minute to place her identity. It very nearly irked her to see such a pause, considering that she had once thought herself quite the standout. Perhaps not, or perhaps she had merely failed to stand out to Teagan. She let the woman have a moment to identify her and then she did, thankfully. It would have been somewhat embarrassing for one high-ranking Cavalier to fail in identifying the former Queen of the Court.

The French name stung, though. It likely would for quite some time. She also almost winced visibly at it before her name. She managed a smile that disguised the twitch before it really betrayed her. The sniff from Teagan also prompted a stiffening of her shoulders. Did she think her a visitor?

Kalypso relaxed somewhat though, her posture loosening as she fluidly jutted a hip out.

Not too long before you yourself did. Brought Thyri and Merlin with me, she added, gesturing vaguely behind her. Though, it was far more likely they were behind Teagan. Semantics. Merlin was likely the name the former Cavalier would recognize the quickest, though Kaly doubted that Thyri was an unknown either. They had bounced around between Casa and the Court often enough to have at least been worthy of being aware of.

I'm sure us being here makes some sense but you, she paused, motioning up and down as though pointing out Teagan to an onlooker. You're an anomaly, she said with a broadening smile, as though it was the best sort of mystery. Why are you here? The very best sort of mystery.

It appeared that the ex-Courtier had not been in New Caledonia long either. At the very least, it didn’t seem like Teagan and her family would be the only new faces wandering around the City. Kalypso dropped two names, and Teagan visibly perked—a slight straightening of her stance, a subtle furrow of her brows—at the familiarity of one of them in particular. “Merlin Knight?” She wanted to be sure that it was the Merlin she thought it was. Her relative had left Casa di Cavalieri much like Kira had; to chase after a woman in the Court.

Not that it would have mattered given how emotionally distant the warrior princess was. Still, a familiar face was a familiar face, particularly amongst a sea of new ones.

The thought of Casa di Cavalieri’s old allies made Teagan remember another. She let out a soft snort. “That jerk, Skoll, didn’t come with you three?” She asked, her tone light and teasing. It had been entirely too long since she had seen his ugly mug.

Kalypso gave a vague explanation—or, assumption, rather—for why she and the other Courtiers had made the arduous move to New Caledonia. It made sense. As a band of Loners and winter already strengthening its grip on the land, resources would be harder to find and guard from other vagrants. A pack was safer. One might have wondered why the group hadn’t sought refuge in their old ally. For Teagan though, that information was not something she had any particular desire to pursue.

Casa di Cavalieri and its matters no longer pertained to her, after all.

The question was returned to her, and the knight offered a dismissive, half-shrug. “Casa di Cavalieri has been without conflict for the past two years. I can recognize when I am no longer needed.” It was the same answer as she had given to the Lord Regent. Whatever Teagan’s personal feelings regarding the reason for the sudden move would be kept close to her heart.

She shifted her weight, canting her head slightly as her canary eyes flicked around them for any signs of a nosy bystander. “What are your thoughts on this pack so far? It seems there was a recent issue regarding their queen being lost.” Small talk, but, perhaps Kalypso’s experiences and opinions thus far could help the Stryder properly gauge how much longer her son was going to continue being upset with her for the move.

Kalypso could only give a nod of affirmation. Likely as not, Merlin would find Teagan at one point or another; it was inevitable considering they now resided together in the same place once more. It would likely make Merlin somewhat happier to see more familiar faces, just as it had Kaly herself. Being surrounded by strangers was not necessarily discomforting, but she much preferred to have at least a little bit of familiarity around her.

She did laugh, though, at the mention of Skoll. How on earth had that man survived so long when it seemed he had a reputation that spanned great distances. No, he stayed behind with his daughter. I don't think he would be too keen to have yet another king above him, she tittered, rolling her eyes. Sure the man had mellowed with age, but he was just as prickly as the stories always suggested.

A lack of conflict had driven Teagan away. Kalypso snorted somewhat at that, though managed to keep the real derision out of her expression. Isn't a lack of war and fighting a general goal for most people? It was only a little bit rhetorical. She understood that Teagan had been a Warlord, which was pointless without a war. She also suspected that Teagan had more reasons to leave the Cavaliers than she was letting on, but the former Courtier decided it was not the time to pry. Maybe later, but not at that moment.

Kaly shifted her balance from one hip jutting out to the other, giving a thoughtful hum as she deliberated an acceptable answer. Jury is still out, but so far I can't see any huge, glaring issues. There is a lot of work to do, which is more than I'm used to. Well, she was used to work, but not in terms of what needed to be done. She had come to a Court that had stables, residences, and other systems well established if somewhat aged. Caledonia had no stables and half the potential homes were desolate ruins that needed a deep renovation.

Buuut, she began, dragging the word out. That just means there's more room to make things as we like it or need it, rather than fighting a system resistant to change. Honestly, it was probably ideal for Kalypso.

She rubbed at her neck a bit, sighing. Actually, I didn't come to find you just to catch up and such. I found something that I think you might have better expertise with, seeing as you were Warlord, after all. Kalypso paused, trailing off, wondering if Teagan was as prone to chivalry as the rest of her family likely were.

Teagan grunted her amusement with the Savoy’s answer and eye roll regarding Skoll. It seemed the golden-furred oaf hadn’t followed his queen after all. Perhaps it was for the better though, for both his sake and those of New Caledonia.

Kalypso’s question was meant with a dismissing half-shrug from Teagan. “It is,” she replied, saying nothing more on the matter. She wasn’t the type to elaborate when she didn’t need to, and particularly not someone she hardly knew. Perhaps in time, the ex-Reine might become someone Teagan could trust or befriend. As it were though, they were little more than acquaintances at best.

Teagan nodded silently to Kalypso’s verdict of New Caledonia. It was comforting to know that she and her family weren’t the only ones that had noticed a few things that the Caledonians were lacking in. Their newness to the region gave them a pass, as had the area that they had chosen to settle down in. There was room to grow, if only there were members that saw to fulfill the pack’s needs. The fact that Kalypso had not found any outstanding issues to bring up either was a good sign. No obvious issues with or between leadership or inner-pack fighting meant that Teagan hadn’t chose horribly.

Her mismatched ears pricked as she sensed a shift in their conversation. “Oh? And what might that be? Fighting? Or diplomacy?” Teagan had excelled in both. She had been the only member of the Council to have successfully become the ambassador of two packs, one of them being the secretive and shady Salsola. As for her fighting prowess and tactics, well, she had been born and raised a Cavalier. “Or is it something else?” Her canary eyes narrowed slightly, searching Kalypso for a hint of where she was steering their conversation towards.

I just realized you could probably use this thread as a corank thread.

Breath, should I take a deep? Faith, should I take the leap?

Kalypso could see that she had at least peaked Teagan's interest. Hopefully it was worth that attention. Hopefully neither? But probably more toward the former, she added with a grimace. She really hoped it was nothing but she was not about to face a potentially dangerous thing on her own. Kalypso was bold but she was by no means an idiot; she knew her limits.

She gestured with a slight wave to have Teagan follow her. It was not too far of a walk but it was hardly within view. I had set up a trap to catch food and when I came back to check on it, it was broken. A simple thing usually. Sometimes, the prey would escape the confines of her nooses with annoying ease and other times they may have simply lain limp and empty. It was not the case.

But it wasn't anything normal, I don't think. It's pretty obvious when they've nibbled out of a rope or slipped out of it. As they walked, she rubbed at her chin in thought, finally ready to try and figure out what the hell had happened to her attempt at finding dinner. It was kind of a clean cut. And she could not explain it away.

On they walked for a bit of a distance, though it was nothing too far from home. Near a rather thick collection of trees and evergreen bushes, the rope trap hung limply where it had been set and triggered. It swayed slightly in the breeze but it was clear that the noose and knot end of the rope was gone.

Kalypso waved to the sight. See? Too clean. No rabbit or turkey is going to get out of that so cleanly. Her lips pursed as she crossed her arms. Maybe Teagan would figure it out. I'm just a little concerned since the High King's lady wife was only so recently reclaimed. She need not elaborate to explain her worry.

She raised a brow, interested in what it was the ex-Reine might have needed help with that required Teagan’s expertise in. Thankfully, she didn’t have to prod for Kalypso to get to the point. At the gesture, she followed after Kalypso, keeping an turned to her as she went on to further explain. It didn’t sound abnormal, the problem Kalypso had. Traps were not always reliable, and broken often if they were not set up properly.

Mako would know better than her though, and Teagan nearly made to voice as much. But, Kalypso was not finished. A clean cut? The detail certainly helped erase Teagan’s initial, doubtful confusion. A blade made clean cuts, but who would purposely sabotage their own packmate’s traps? The thought was enough to cause the Stryder’s lips to form the thin line of a frown.

Upon being shown the trap, Teagan did her own inspection. There wasn’t much to look at in all honesty, as the main part of the trap was decidedly missing. If something had been caught in the trap, it was clear that some outside force had freed it. The severed end was, indeed, cut cleanly as Kalypso had said. There was no way something had snapped the rope with strength alone, and there was nothing sharp nearby that the rope could have accidentally caught onto to cause such a cut either.

“This is concerning,” she agreed, her canary eyes continuing the search the immediate area for clues of what might have happened. “You don’t have any…enemies in New Caledonia already, do you?” Someone that might have no liked the new Luperci that had joined them? Teagan didn’t think it was likely, but, it would be easier to get to the bottom of the mystery if the culprit had just been someone being spiteful.

She knelt and sniffed, her gaze shifting in the general direction that the unfamiliar scent moved off into. “Did you check that way yet?” She asked, jerking her head as she moved to stand once more. Still new, she wasn’t familiar enough with the pack’s group scent or individual Caledonians’ to be able to discern a packmate’s from an uninvited trespasser’s.

Teagan was quick on the uptake. Good, good. Kalypso was glad that the warrior woman was not just a meathead like so many of the warriors she had a tendency of knowing. Skoll had been a giant blockhead. Was still a giant blockhead. Probably. Galilee tempered him, at least. A little.

Not as I'm aware, not me personally, at least. I know their Queen Consort disappeared and such, but nothing particularly lethal has happened. As far as she knew, at least. The Caledonians had come on the tails of destruction in their native lands, so Kaly had no clue what could have been chasing them. She had her own enemies, but none would come so far into the territory without cause, especially not to just cut a trap.

Honestly, it was probably someone in the pack having found a caught animal and choosing to take someone else's trapped prize. She did not voice that point, though. She felt foolish for thinking it after raising such a fuss.

Teagan gestured in a direction. Kalypso glanced that way and then shook her head to the former Warlord. No, but I can. We can meet back later if we find something. Hopefully it's nothing.. serious. She was really quite loathe to stumble into so much drama and danger when she had been moving away from home for stability and security. The last thing she wanted was violence.

She started to walk in the direction indicated to her, knowing that she'd find Teagan later to discuss what they found, if they even found anything.
