The training doesn't stop here

Eugene Sadira

Ever since the training that Eugene had done with Skoll, he had been venturing outside of the pack lands. Already now he had been to two borders, and it was likely that he would return again and move on to other ones. There was still one pack that he wished to stop by, and that was the pack of knights that Tony had belonged to. It was the perfect place for him to learn more to improve his skills. He was still determined to prove to his father what kind of heir he was and that he could one day become a knight, maybe even something more than that. That was his goal in life.

He knew that there was some time for the prince to relax, and he spent that time taking care of Jolie, though he wasn’t really riding her. Alder had yet to show him how to place the saddle on her, so he wouldn’t be able to actually practice riding her on his own until he learned that. He was confident with the basics, so he hoped that the male would put a bit of confidence in him and show him sooner rather than later.

The young male had spent his morning taking care of the horse and soon made his way to the training grounds. It was very convinent that it was near by the stables. He wanted to take some time today to practice some of the things that he had learned from his spar with Skoll. It was a bit hard to practice without someone there, though he did the best that he could. His arms moved through the air before he actually pretended to block an opponent. He knew that he needed to use them as much as he did his offense. Man, it really would have been nice if he had a weapon. It would make practicing on his own a bit easier.

The shadow male was settling into a loose routine now that things between the fighting friends had settled down a bit. He went out each morning to see that Helexia was well and often he'd take her on a walk around the place. It wasn't as big as Vinátta he didnt think, but there was still much he didn't know about the Court and morning walks with the filly were a good way for him to discover more about his new home. Often he would go hunting in the afternoon or instead he would practise with staff, bow or knife. Either one of the weapons were getting more familiar with each handling and while there was still work to do on all three, he was becoming skilled at what he did.

This afternoon he'd decided to head over to the training field to practise with his staff. Last time he'd come down here, he'd sparred with Skoll and he'd quite enjoyed the time he'd spent with the Haskel male. But it had been some time since he'd seen the sun male and he hoped that perhaps he'd see his friend once more. As he approached however, a vaguely familiar figure revealed itself. He didn't know the other by name, but he'd see the young male around once or twice and he associated him with King Silvano. He looked to be trying to practise, but Tem knew well enough that it wasn't easy to do it on ones own.

Hey there! He called out to get the boys attention. Coming to a stop just outside the training ring, Tem gave a crooked grin. I'm Temeraire... You want some help? He asked, wondering if the male might want to spar against him or maybe he'd like to learn a little about wielding a staff. I could teach you some things about the staff? He offered, lifting the long hunk of wood as if to point out what he meant.

Eugene Sadira

Eugene was very limited to the practice that he was able to do on his own. Where was Skoll when he needed him? He knew his father had mentioned there being another knight in the court, but he had never met him before. The golden wolf was the only other wolf following in the same path. Both of them wanted to become knights, but the young male wanted to be something more. He was his father’s heir, so he was destined for more. Would that mean he would be the king one day? If that was true then maybe it would really impress his father if he passed the other wolf. That would be something wouldn’t it?

The prince soon stopped as he heard a voice behind him. It belonged to someone that he had never seen before. Since he had shifted and gotten older, he had been focusing on learning his new skills, rather than moving along the borders like he used to do when he as a pup. Guess that was why he wasn’t meeting the new faces as much. Well this was a good opportunity to learn about one of the newer members to the court.

What was even better about meeting the black male was that he offered to teach him some more fighting, though this time he offered up the use of his staff. That would be nice come to think of it. At least that way he would be able to learn with a weapon rather than just his fists. He gave a tip of his head, turning to face him fully, It’s nice to meet you. I am Eugene, though I prefer to be called Gene. He crossed his arms gently and flicked his tail, I would like that Temeraire. Now it was up to the other male to start their spar. He didn’t know where they would be able to begin.

The younger male turned, regarding him with bright seafoam eyes. Temeraire only knew the boy by sight, he'd seem him around only a few times. But the connection with King Silvano had stuck and the boy forced his head to dip into a semi-bow of respect to the male. He may have been younger than him, but Temeraire was slowly learning the rules of respect and titles in the Court and hoped he'd managed the right one. White rimmed ears flashed forward as the male identified himself and the boy nodded, affirming that he'd understood the others name. Gene it is then. He agreed with the male, his own crooked grin lifting the left side of his mouth for a moment. His offer of a lesson was received well, although not perhaps with the excitement Tem might have expected. The other simply crossed his arms and confirmed that a lesson would suit him well.

Blue eyes glanced towards the singular staff he had, his only staff in fact. It would be impossible to teach with only one. I've only got the one staff... so how about we use some strong sticks for the moment? He questioned, although he was already moving towards a nearby tree, giving the boy no choice but to accept his way of doing things. He could have equipped Eugene alone with a stick and worked him over with his own strong staff. But that would have been unfair and Temeraire intended to be on the same level as the young prince. Reaching up, the sought out two relatively straight branches and snapped them off.

Where are you going to strike an opponent? The male asked as he came back over to the training grounds. It was good to start with the knowledge the male already knew, to see what others had taught him and to find out what else Tem could teach him. He tossed one of the branches over, rubbing a hand swiftly up and down his own to remove the crumbling bark that might cause problems later on. Hitting sticks together usually caused small bits of wood and bark to fly off and that wasn't pleasant when it got caught in the eyes or the nose.

Eugene Sadira

Eugene really didn’t know how much the others thought of him, or if they even knew that he was the eldest son of the king. It was likely that this newcomer didn’t know, but he wasn’t going to boast. That was something he would never do. There was no honor in doing something like that. Even though he hadn’t been spending all that much time with his family, he was picking up on the proper way to speak to others. It was good to know how to address others. He did not want to show anyone any disrespect. He looked up as the male agreed to using his nickname. He dipped his head in approval before waiting for his lesson to start.

The prince had caught onto the fact that the male had only one staff, so his suggestion to use sticks instead was a good one. He wasn’t given time to say anything before the black one had gone off to find something suitable for the both of them to use. The young male waited for him to return, and once he had, taken the stick that was given to him.

Jade orbs moved over to the other male as he worked a bit with his stick. The young male did no such thing. He just waited for him to be ready. Being a page now, he was prepared to work with anything. He learned that much when he sparred with Skoll. Ears flicked gently as Temeraire asked his question. He thought for a moment, seeing as he had the time to do so. If this was the golden wolf he was practicing with, he wouldn’t be able to do this. After a bit of thinking, he looked back to the near black wolf, It would all depend really. If we were in front of each other like this, I would probably aim for their center or their arms, working a way to make them open for another attack.

His question resulted in a short silence from the boy and Temeraire allowed him a moment to think. While he knew it was important to be able to think on ones feet, training was the time for mistakes. To learn from them, adjust techniques and get it wrong. That was what training was for, because when in a fight, mistakes could be fatal. It was perhaps ironic that Temeraire thought this way; his upbringing had been peaceful and while he'd been in a few scraps, battle was something he was completely innocent in. Not only that, but his family weren't particularly classified as warriors. Bran and Niernan had their own weapons and Shiloh had taught him about the staff, but none of them were seasoned warriors and his way of thinking must have come from somewhere else.

Eugene's answer had the male nodding gently, agreeing as he was speaking. These were good points and it was clear to Tem that his mind was well suited to strategy. He was reminded of Skoll, who'd blocked much of his body with his shield. But a few well placed whacks of his staff and a deserved punch in the face had seen Skoll on the floor instead of himself. Very good. With the staff, your reach is much longer, depending on where you hold it. You can strike at paws and hands, which will disrupt balance and grip. He informed the boy, reaching out with his own makeshift staff to softly touch the males toes and then his hands, demonstrating what his words were saying.

Right... come at me. It was probably a good idea to see how the boy fought, what his style was, before trying to make any corrections. And of course, Temeraire was learning too, adding to his own knowledge on the subject.

It seemed that the male was content with his answer. Skoll had taught him about strategy when he was practicing hand to hand combat. He had to think about how to get the advantage and then use it against his opponent, though he had to admit that the golden wolf’s way of teaching was a bit better, just jumping right in and running off instinct. That being said though, there was nothing wrong with the way that the black one was presenting the lesson. He was learning and in the end that was all that really mattered. He gave a nod as the male explained to hit the paws and hands to help when using a staff.

Once Temeraire had his own stick in his hand, he instructed the prince to come at him. He probably would have felt better if he was the one that defended first. At least that way he would be able to see the way that the black wolf used his moves. Guess it wasn’t going to work like that. He always could wait it out and see if he would make a move, but that would just be wasting some time. He used this time though to make a little plan for himself. Since the black wolf was expecting him to move first, it gave him a little time to think.

Once the young male was sure of his plan, he began to move forward towards the other male. He kept his stick at the ready as he moved closer. He was going to take the black one’s advice and see if he could use it, but first he needed to make an opening. He moved his stick towards one of the black male’s front paws. His attempt was to hit it with the stick and perhaps do as he was suggested.

Teme Optime is by Alaine!

Eugene remained silent and Temeraire didn't know if this was a normal thing. He was young, there was no doubt about that. But he conducted himself in a manner that was more expected of an adult. Temeraire own siblings acted their age, gamboling around the pack lands and getting themselves into all sorts of trouble. Of course, he didn't know exactly how old the Kings son was, but that mattered little to him. There was something strange about him. Blue eyes watched him as he considered his move, far too mature Tem considered. Young wolves, including himself because he hadn't yet seen two years, usually rushed it. It was a lesson his Aunt Shiloh had taught him well; she'd kicked his ass many times when teaching him to use his new staff.

Just as he'd done when his aunt had taught him a few moves, Eugene took his advice and tried to use it. The crack to his knuckles smarted and he snatched his hands back, automatically reacting to swing his own stick around to aim for the males wrist. Action and reaction were smooth, trying to catch the boys hands before he could retreat any further. Temeraire had never been one to leave it up to chance however and without knowing where his strike had hit, he thrust his own leg forward, attempting to knock into Eugene's opposing foot and knock him off balance.

Eugene didn’t see anything wrong with his maturity. His father was the king after all and if he wanted to prove he was a suitable heir, he needed to be mature in nature and right with justice. He wanted to prove just what kind of prince he was. The only downside was the king didn’t really seem to be around all that much. Had he even seen the strides that he had made in his training and skills? Likely not unless he actually took the time to tell his father about them. Well, perhaps it wouldn’t hurt to have him watch one of these days. Maybe then he could even learn from the master himself.

The prince returned his attention to his current training. It wasn’t exactly ideal for what he wanted to learn, but it was at least a start. He was sure that with more help from his father and maybe even Skoll, he would be on the right path towards becoming more than just a page. He wanted to become a knight, and he would do whatever it took to reach his goal, so long as he knew there was no injustice in what he was doing. That was what the pack was founded on right? Justice and Honor.

The young male watched the black male’s movements. It seemed he knew he would take the black one’s advice and was prepared to make a move against him. This was a good way for him to learn to. This way he would know what to do when someone did the same to him. The prince kept his grip strong on the stick, so even though Temeraire hit him, he wouldn’t lose his grip on the weapon. Wanting to see what it would be like if the black one made the first move, he moved back, also to avoid the move he had made with his foot. He stood there, watching the black and white male as he waited.

Teme Optime is by Alaine!

Unfortunately, the shadow princes own justification for his fighting skill didn't stem from a need for justice or honour. He remembered, vividly, his Uncle Niernan's most vital lesson; protect yourself. The terror that had risen up in him when his Uncle had 'attacked' him, to teach him the dangers of wandering out of the pack on his own was something he never wanted to feel it again. It seemed to have fuelled his want to control and fighting had been something he'd cultivated on his own. His aunt Shiloh had given that natural talent a direction and a focus, the staff centering him so that he wasn't simply brawling. Still, it didn't stop him from releasing his anger in an aggressive way; he remembered the drunk dog he'd knocked out cold because of his argument with Lena. Logically he knew he could deal with this better, but the sheer power in affecting someone else as such had made him light headed and giddy.

The male tried hard to fight the scorn rising in the back of his throat. The boy in front of him didn't take the opportunity to strike back, to get his own shot in. He couldn't deny the merit of watching ones opponent and making rational decisions, but fighting certainly wasn't about rationale. In the end, it boiled down to the desperation and struggle, the want to win and the weaknesses of the other that you were smart enough to feed off of. Action and reaction, strike and counterstrike. Strategy mattered very little when it really came down to it, but the dark male forcibly told himself that the boy was still green. While Temeraire hadn't been in any really battles, he'd been in enough fights by now to know that it simply didn't matter what your plan was, something always changed it.

With a single snort of breath through his dark nose, Temeraire didn't give the younger boy a chance to think. Darting forward, he spun the stick in his hands, fast so that the movement would confuse the boy. If he didn't wish to attack, then that really was his mistake. Feeling the flat of the stick stop on his palm, Temeraire gripped it, stopping the swirl of the weapon and bringing his arm round in a slash motion to catch his opponents head, chest or shoulders. Either target would be beneficial to him and blue eyes looked eagerly as he tried to predict the blow.
