Something Sweet

Pascal

The hotel hadn't collapsed.

This was starting to puzzle Terra. The way Strel had spoken it sounded like it was set to fall over any day now. Yet the old building continued to sit there. She still hadn't gotten up the courage to actually spend more time in the hotel than was necessary. She'd go in to find those she wanted to talk to, or pull out something that she'd seen in there and had found a use for. Actually exploring the hotel, even to see her old room, was completely out of the question. So the young coyote sat outside of the hotel, staring at the walls and trying to figure out why it was still standing.

Maybe he'd lied. Strel had been growing incoherent near the end of his life. There had been so many things wrong with him. Memories of when a pup had died in a collapsed building and the tales of how dangerous human buildings were when she was growing up stopped her from finding out though. Frustrated Terra shook her head and approached the front steps. Cautiously she sniffed at them, trying to detect rot or something else that would cause the building to be dangerous. All she smelled were lots and lots of pack mates though.

Out of character.

White tipped and dark paws thudded eagerly on the wooden flooring, a scuffle played out by the two young Princes. Unfortunately, it looked as though Eugene had the upper paw and as such, had one leg over his brothers back, jaws mouthing at his ruff. Pascal, for his part, bellowed ferociously and made for a roll, attempting to throw his brother off. It didn't work, per say, because the Sadira boys ended in a heap in the middle of the room- Pascal's paw pressed against Eugene's head, pushing his brother away while the opposing boys hip bone dug into Pas's tender stomach. With a grunt, the boy gave up and huffed, laying his head against the ground for a moment.

A wriggle and a tug later and the boys were separate once more, both able to breath properly and with no damage. Pascal loved playing with his brother, even if they did get a little rough some times. With a devilish grin, Pascal pounced forward, jaws closing over his brothers ear and tugging hard before he released and scampered out of the way. The door was in his sights and the young Prince didn't think twice about racing for it. With a yelp of excitement, he exited their rooms and made for the stairs. Imagined pawsteps of his brother caused the boy to charge forward, further and further down, his ultimate goal- outside. It was perhaps not to be so- as he neared the entrance, the dusty brown of another who at first was not recognised caused a squeal of surprise from the boy, who promptly lost his footing and tumbled haphazardly down the last few stairs.

Squeals brought Terra's head up. The small female watched as two small balls of fur barreled down the stairs. Pascal and Eugene were in a hurry to get to wherever they were going. Her tail swayed slightly, enjoying watching the pups play. She didn't get why they would be allowed to live in such a dangerous building, but that was Silvano's choice. Her presence surprised Pascal, and instead of a clean get away to the outside he tripped, stumbling down the rest of the steps. Rapidly Terra back pedaled and moved over to the pup.

Sniffing at him she sighed with relief. No injuries, just a clumsy pup. Hey Pascal. Playing with your brother? Terra's voice was soft, not wanting to startle him. He was such an odd pup, not all the way there. It was his name's fault, she was sure of it. Poor pup, doomed to not have anything to hold onto. He had been so freaked out the last time they had met. Terra was hoping to avoid a repeat of that. Pascal was so attached to his parents, she had no idea what he would make of her. Eventually she'd solve the puzzle.

He hadn't crashed into her. It was a relief for the young boy, who remembered clearly what it had felt like to be in the females arms. It hadn't felt pleasant, the icy shivers running down his spine. However, his tumbling fall down the stairs had been haphazard, careening down the stairs and out into the hallway. It hurt and for a moment, the boy lay stunned. His little boy panted for breath, as it so often did and his eyes were squeezed tight shut. He could no longer hear Eugene scampering after him, but there was the thought that he would be soon. And as quickly as he was stunned, the boy rolled over and onto his paws as Terra spoke.

For a moment, his head ducked automatically and he cast a glance around, to perhaps check that there was nobody else around that could come up and surprise him. His natural curiosity and enthusiasm however caused a swift nod of his head. "I wus chasin' him and he wus chasin' me and den i'fell down'stairs. I dun know where he's now..." He chattered, keeping mismatched eyes on the stairs. Perhaps Terra would watch out for his brother, or help him track his sibling down.

The pup's body seemed to be on the brink of exhaustion, panting with his eyes closed tight. It had been a long fall the pup had taken. It must have hurt the pup a bit. Terra took a step forwards, considering looking the pup over for injuries. Before she could do more than consider that the pup was up and standing before her, bright eyed and cheerful. At least one couldn't claim that his spirits were low. Well, Terra could claim that he was weak and over emotional, but he'd cried his head off after getting a little lost, something that Terra strove for when young.

It sounded like he'd been having a fair bit of fun running around. Grinning Terra listened to his short tale. Those were a lot of stairs to tumble down. She looked up the grand staircase, wondering what the humans had been thinking when they'd made it. Terra liked how it was built, but she didn't know what had inspired the humans to do such a thing. Why would they make stairs at all? Why would they want more than one story? She liked it, but it would never have occurred to her to make such a thing before experiencing it for herself. Want to hunt him down together?

Terra had moved closer, he could see. The temptation to slide further away was suppressed for a moment, before his instinctive curiosity gave him a way out. His nose twitched and he scuttled forward, sniffing along the bottom step. He'd been up and down them many times, but other than his first escapade down them, where he'd been unsure of what was going on, he didn't take much notice. Now, he pushed his nose against it, testing it, before his tongue followed suit and he licked the wood, milk teeth digging in as he tried to find out what exactly it was. As he was still young, he discovered much through his mouth and now was no different. Terra's words caused him to glance back, an automatic nod shaking his head.

"I's brave" He informed her with a nod, before mismatched eyes roamed up the stairs to see if his brother was lurking somewhere up there. He couldn't see that far and so had no idea whether he would be ambushed if he walked up there. But with Terra on his side, Eugene wouldn't be able to attack him. Her words were once again answered with a nod, rather more excited this tim. "We's gonna get 'im!" The pup infused, little legs unable to carry him fast enough as he tried to get up the stairs once more.

The pup slid away from her over to the steps. Terra watched with amusement as he proceeded to investigate the wood thoroughly, complete with testing to see if it was edible. The stairs must have been pretty fun to investigate as he was taking his time mouthing along it and testing the properties. Pascal's attention returned to Terra at her words, nodding his head happily. Stifling her laughter at his serious words about being brave she looked over the stairs. Perhaps it was brave. Terra thought that accidental fit the description better. Lots of pups would explore the stairs happily. Few would choose to fall down them.

Laughing Terra trotted up the stairs, watching the pup closely to keep him from tumbling again. He still had a bundle of puppy fat, and his short legs were trying pretty hard to propel him up the steps. The steps weren't too long. Reaching the top Terra lowered her head, finding Gene's trail. He wasn't there anymore, but where he could have gone off to was a mystery for her. Glancing back at Pascal she grinned. Found his trail. Lowering her nose again Terra began to trot along it, tracking down the missing brother.

Gnawing on the wood gave the boy a mixed sensation in his mouth. By now, he had all of his milk teeth and it wouldn't be long before they began to fall out and be replaced by larger, permanent teeth. It did mean, however, that his milk teeth were beginning to loosen. As a puppy, chewing on things came second nature to the boy, but now it seemed to create a tingling pain in his gums that was addictive. Chewing on the wood of the stairs was helping. However, the desire to sneak up on Eugene with his friend in tow, and therefore able to help him out, was far more interesting and the boy abandoned his wood chewing to scramble up the stairs after Terra.

While she walked easily, he still found it hard to get his legs to move up and climbing the stairs with enthusiasm was almost impossible for him. Using a combination of his chest to winch himself up and back legs to propel him further, the boy managed to get up not long after Terra had stopped on the landing. Mismatched eyes watched with interest as she sniffed at the ground. Whenever he tried that, he couldn't tell what was what. As she revealed that she'd found his trail, Pascal crept forward and sniffed at the area. As he'd found before, there was a jumble of smells and he marvelled at how the female could tell anything apart. "Le's go!" He squealed, charging off across the hallway in what he thought was the right direction.

The pup sniffed at the ground behind her, curious at the trail she'd found. Terra watched him warmly, knowing that he probably couldn't make anything out of the mixture of scents yet. He would learn. Well, if his lack of a name allowed him to. Terra would do what she could for Pascal, but there was only so far she was willing to get involved with something so empty. Pascal broke into a run down the hall, leaving the trail she'd found behind. It would take longer to trail along the scent to track Gene down, but they would still be more likely to catch him if they followed it.

Terra trotted after him, wondering where exactly he thought they were going. Are we going to check the rooms? There were plenty of empty ones that they could stick their heads in and see if a pup was there. Even if they didn't find Gene it would be a lot of fun just exploring the hotel. Terra had lots of fun doing that, even when she already had explored plenty. She hadn't been inside in a while, and still felt a little nervous about it. There were parts she'd forgotten, and parts she'd never really investigated. There was plenty to do.

Charging down the hall was probably alerting his brother to his presence far more than Pascal would have liked, but he couldn't help it. He thought he had the scent and the padding behind him told him that his hunting partner was hot on his heels. His breath panted from his mouth, tongue lolling out at his grinning lips. It was obvious to anyone looking that he was running haphazardly- he moved from one side of the hall to the other, sniffing here and there. It made no difference to him that he couldn't actually pick up his brothers scent- he knew he was on the right trail and he was far too excited to stop and actually follow Terra, who probably knew far better where his brother was.

Her question, however, brought the tawny pup to a skidding stop. The rooms! Eugene could be anywhere in the building and sticking to the hallways was limiting their choices. The comical look of shock on the boys face was replaced quickly with a determined frown and he pounced forward, as close to Terra as he willingly dared. "Which room first?" He asked, eyeing the door in front of him with interest. Terra knew where she was going however and he would follow her judgement.
