Set at Fort Cumberland.

  In Character

The concept of a fort was mostly lost on Lochlan. Why would one choose to be cooped up inside of walls at all times with no tree cover or prey animals? There also wasn't a large water source readily available which automatically made it a less-than-enviable territory to the young Stormbringer. After all, he had a strong affinity for water and wouldn't live anywhere that was far away from it. Still, he had thought it would be interesting to try something new today. Which made this the perfect area to spend time. On a normal day he wouldn't have given this place a second glance, so for something new, it was a great place to explore.

He was in his Optime form - as he usually was, lately - because it made the most sense to climb around on some of the rubble. Besides, he had some hopes that he would find some new objects to acquire. Clothes or perhaps some other useful antiques from the time of humans. He had never had much interested in the "what was here before" of the world, though. What mattered to him was the here and now, the world that he saw and that existed around him. Basic history was fine, but digging into the philosophy and far away world of yesteryear would have never appealed to him.

A shiny object caught his eye and he turned toward it, bending down to see what it was. It was a penny, mostly grubby with just a faint glimmer left of its former copper color. In fact, it was pure luck of sunlight striking the right spot that he had even seen it. Loch picked it up to examine it. What a strange piece of something. It was just a metallic disk. Too small to help with taking down an animal, not edible... what would someone use this for? He pondered this for a moment, then decided to put in the satchel that he had slung across his shoulder. Maybe Teagan would like it.

The surrounding area currently being examined by Chloé was, in fact, somewhat unfamiliar -- odd piles of rubble and tall concealing walls that seemed, for the most part, uncomfortable. Who'd want to be trapped behind them? If it made the place safe, though, then maybe they were logical; maybe the person who'd put them up was smart. Paw-pads now coarse in texture from walking, and walking, and walking, thudded on the ground as the slender-bodied wolf wandered around, blackberry nose twitching somewhat, picking up the obvious scent of another being wandering around somewhere. Making a subconscious decision that she was bored, even more bored than bored, Chloé wandered off in search of the source of the unfamiliar scent and also far-off paw steps.

Misty green eyes spotted one of those odd, people-shaped wolves bending over to pick up something from the ground, squinting somewhat before padding up with her chest puffed out and tail hanging limply behind her. "What'd you find?" she asked, hardly interested in who this person was, pointing her nose upwards because he was quite a bit taller than she was. The canine twitched her nose, somewhat disappointed because he seemed to have put it in a bag, which was odd. Who'd want to carry around a bag-? Wait, obviously those people-shaped canines that she didn't appear too fond of at the moment because they made her feel small, except she was quite small. Hmpf!

The sound of someone addressing him drew his attention. He looked at about the height of an adult Luperci in Optime form... and saw nothing. Puzzled, he looked down and noticed someone in the Lupus form. This seemed highly unusual to him, because he was far more accustomed to adults that had shifted to their two-legged form. Not that he never saw someone in Lupus, it was just much rarer. It didn't even occur to him that she had no choice because she could only be in a four-legged form. Non-Luperci weren't something that he had spent a lot of time around or knew much about. Perhaps there were some within Vinatta, but they weren't inside of his closest relationships. This was not to say he had a bias against it in the slightest, it was just a lack of experience.

So it took him a tick, but he did respond to the question. "Well, I don't know what it is, to be honest." he pulled it back out of the satchel and held it up to the light. Then he crouched down so that it was closer to her line of sight. Some of the grime rubbed off on his fingers and a bit more of the shiny copper showed through. It was different from anything he had ever seen as far as its coloration. "I'm Lochlan." he knew it was polite to introduce himself when he first met someone. Though she was honestly one of the first wolves outside of Vinatta pack members that he had ever met. At least she was a girl; that made him almost instantly at ease, despite the fact that she was a stranger. She had a pretty face, too, one that might appeal to him in a different way once he got a bit older. For now, it just continued to help him feel comfortable.

The small canine cocked her head to the left somewhat, waiting for his response, and exhaling quietly when he finally did respond. "Oh," she said, somewhat surprised. Didn't people-shaped wolves know most of that? Chloé huffed, lips turning downwards into a slight frown, watching the Lupus carefully, wondering if he ever bothered to be a regular wolf. "I'm Chloé," she introduced, almost hesitantly, sniffing the air and noting that he probably was from a pack, since he smelled a bit like other wolves.. all jumbled up, but she didn't really know what any of the packs smelled like. The female squinted somewhat, running his coloration through her head and storing it off somewhere since she'd only seen her father, who looked somewhat like her except with different-colored eyes. For a moment, instead of focusing on thinking up something else to say to the other individual her attention drifted off towards Absolon, who was probably still a loner like she was -- not belonging anywhere.

"Where do you come from?" she asked in a robotic voice, standing almost stiffly, eyes widening somewhat. Where did most everyone else come from? There probably wasn't just one pack of wolves, she supposed, and maybe the other ones were much further away... but she didn't think she'd ever go that far, no, her paws couldn't walk that far. "I mean, a pack, or something.." she continued in a hushed voice, nose pointing downwards somewhat, though at an angle, hardly able to see the individual's face from there since he happened to be so much taller than she was, standing not anywhere close to three feet tall.

She seemed almost disappointed that he didn’t know more about the coin. His ears flipped back in a silent apology. It was very possible that someone else at his pack would know more. Someone interested in these human things. Since she didn’t specifically remark on wanting to know more about it, though he didn’t offer to try and find more information for her. Instead, he listened politely as she stated her name. “A pleasure to meet you, Chloé.” he wagged his tail. It was an interesting name, certainly not one that he had heard before.

Her posture seemed stiff and the comfort he had initially felt dissipated, replaced by a strange tightening in both his chest and his gut. Had he done something wrong that had angered her? The boy couldn’t recall anything inappropriate or rude… maybe she was more upset by the coin thing than he had realized? He idly placed it back in his satchel and frowned a bit. When she further explained what she had meant, he nodded absentmindedly. Then he realized that he was just stalling the conversation and making it more awkward. The exact opposite of what he had wanted. Clearly he needed to work on his "meeting strangers" skills.

The first thing he did was to sit down so that he was more level with her. That way if she wanted to look at his face, it would be easier than with him looming over her. His satchel settled on the ground. “Sorry. Yeah, I’m from Vinatta. My pack is over there.” He gestured in the direction of his homeland. “Do you have a pack?” he asked in return, though she didn’t seem to have a strong amount of scents about her. That didn’t mean she didn’t have a pack, though. Some wolves had less of a pack scent than others or perhaps there weren’t many members. He knew little about the customs of other packs.

The darkly colored canine bobbed her head in a nod, "Nice to meet you too," she stated with a friendly smile now bridging across her muzzle, shifting her position somewhat as she listened to him continue speaking, although it took him a bit to do so. "Vinatta?" she asked curiously, looking around the area, nose twitching. "Never head of it!" she said with a somewhat confused expression as she returned her attention to Lochlan. Of course, she didn't know what it was since she didn't know much about any packs. "What? I don't have a pack," she continued, huffing and wondering to herself.

Chloé wagged her tail, one of her ears flicking as she thought about what to say next because she didn't want to seem awkward. "What's it like? In Vinatta?" she asked, wondering how far off it was. He'd just said it was 'over there' but she didn't really know where from what he had said. Chloé blinked her misty-green eyes, sitting down despite the fact that the other canine was much, much taller than her in his Optime form, which she thought was a bit weird looking though didn't think any further than that on it.

He was relieved that she seemed to have settled a bit and was a touch friendlier. At least she was smiling, that was a good sign! His body relaxed more too. Loch hadn't realized he was holding so much tension in his shoulders until after he let it go. When she said that she hadn't heard of Vinatta, he blinked in a bit of surprise. "We've been around for about a year, now, I think. Since before I was born, anyway, which was quite a few months ago." which felt like forever to him, since he was not even a year old yet. For adults, the passage of those months had probably leaped by them. For him, it had seemed a slow drag to adolescence. Which hadn't really mattered, to him. Being young was nice, just as growing older was nice. Though he was starting to understand that he needed to do more as an adult than he had as a pup.

At her almost affronted response that she had no pack, he frowned in silent empathy. Did she want a pack? Surely all wolves wanted a pack. It was at the very core of their nature to be in a social family group, wasn't it? He had never heard of someone that purposefully chose to live on their own, so he assumed she was somewhat new to the area. At her question about Vinatta, he opened his mouth, eager to answer... then realized the question was a bit harder than he had initially realized. After all, he hadn't ever really known anything else. "Well, I was born there, so I can't say I know what other packs are like. We're very focused on family, though, and taking care of each other. We have sheep and a lot of varied territory area. My favorite place is our lake, which has lots of frogs and fish for water hunting. It's also a good swimming area. My uncle is in charge of the pack. I could show you around sometime, if you'd like." he offered freely, because she seemed totally harmless to him. He felt sure Saul wouldn't mind.

Chloé took on a somewhat confused expression, a hushed, "Oh," slipping past her muzzle. The she-wolf continued to listen to him speak, wondering why she hadn't noticed the pack scent before, since she'd been wandering around the Northern Tides area for a few months. The canine shifted her position slightly, nose turned upwards so that she could listen to him talking since she was just sitting down, feeling small and such. Her tail swished back and fourth over the ground a few times, huffing. "That would be nice," she continued, shuffling her paws against the ground.

"Sheep? Sounds funny," she continued, trying to remember if she had ever seen a sheep before. Chloé let out a small laugh at the word 'sheep'. "Sheep, sheep," she repeated, crinkling her blackberry colored nose somewhat afterwards.

The boy noted her quiet "oh", and her expression of confusion. His stomach twisted in sympathy. Apparently he hadn't spoken clearly or had upset her in some way. As an extremely empathetic creature, he felt the need to help her feel more comfortable. Fortunately it didn't seem that the confusion stayed for too long. She accepted his offer to show off Vinatta's pack lands. "Great! I can show you where it is later or at least give you directions." he swished his tail back and forth on the ground, relieved that at the very least he could be her tour guide. Although perhaps he was wrong about visitors. He would ask his father when he got home just to make absolutely sure he was allowed to take loners through the pack lands.

At her comment about sheep, he tilted his head. The word had been so much a part of his early vocabulary that it didn't occur to him that someone else might not even be familiar with them. Her laughter made him grin, though, feeling the last bit of uncertainty unclench in his stomach. Pleasure flooded through him that he had been able to help her feel happy. That was his big mission in life: make others happy. Her crinkled nose was cute, too, and he filed away that moment as one of his favorites for the day. This was definitely way better than finding the coin. "Have you ever seen sheep before? They're wooly creatures with hooves. Kind of like short, fat, fluffy deer. Most of them are lighter in color than deer, though." okay so maybe it wasn't the best analogy, but he figured she would know what a deer was at least. They were wild creatures, so he figured most wolves (both Luperci and non-Luperci) would be pretty intimate with them. If not, then he wondered what she ate.

She nodded, obviously happy that he'd offered to show her around his pack's territory, which seemed pretty nice to her, since she really hadn't talked to anyone except her father before. "That'd be great!" she said, misty green eyes lightning up as she spoke. Chloé listened carefully as he began talking about sheep, looking quite interested in the weird animal. "It sounds like they look funny," she stated with a nod of her darkly colored head, picturing an animal with knobby knees and antlers with poofy fur, since she had nothing to reference. The she-wolf laughed again, at her own picture of what sheep looked like, and then clamped her jaws together in attempts to stop.

"So," she continued, drawing in a quick breath and exhaling rather slowly before continuing what she was going to say, thinking for a moment since she'd almost lost her train of thought and hardly ever managed to catch it when that happened. "Uh.. what do sheep do?" she asked, blinking, because sheep seemed somewhat interesting to her unsophisticated brain at the moment. "If I get to look around your pack can I see some..?" she asked shyly, wondering what they were even for, because it didn't sound like they were supposed to be eaten.
