still calling me home

set for tomorrowww! [000]

The dark body moving beneath him was beginning to get more and more familiar. The dark blackness of the gelding had first drawn his attention as it reflected his own colour. And then he'd spotted the stark white splash on its left back hoof, just above the hard keratin that made up the structure. It seemed fate, that he would find a horse that looked like him. Aside from the white coronet, the gelding was completely black and was not branded with the saddle marking that the rest of the Svantevit horses had. After haggling for a while, Temeraire had managed to get the wolves to part with their horse, who then informed him that his new horse had a name. Silence. It was given in such an offhand way that it had taken the dark male a while to realise that the animal was actually called Silence and after a moment, he'd looked at the creature (who'd stared docilely back) and snorted roughly. Silence. What a name to call a horse.

In the days that followed however, Tem had learnt why he'd been named Silence. He may so little noise that the male often had to check to make sure he was still walking beside him. If he listened hard enough, he could hear the soft sound of hooves on soft earth, but the gelding was so quiet, he didn't nicker or huff like Hex did. Briefly, he'd considered turning around and asking the traders what the hell was wrong with him. He would have too, had the horse not steered him well clear of a boggy marsh that would have sucked them both in. It seemed that intelligence did not necessarily depend on a vocal personality. So he'd continued and thanked the quiet horse for its instincts.

The familiar planes of Cour des Miracles did not give him the same excitement as the forested landscape of Vinátta. But then, his whole family resided up there. Never the less, the prospect of seeing Lena again and thinking of her reaction to the goods he'd picked up for her. Unfortunately, he'd traded everything he had to get the horse and tack wasn't included in that price. Two layered blankets served as his saddle, which seemed to suit Silence fine. The horse didn't seem to care about the lack of saddle and bridle and instead responded to the pressure of Temeraire's legs on his flanks. In turn, Tem only kept a loose hold on the geldings black mane. He was still having trouble with trotting and galloping and he'd fallen too many times in the past few days to really admit. But he was getting there.

Unwilling to let the near perfectly black gelding go, Temeraire had instead turned him towards the old farmhouse he shared with Lena. He was sure the horse would be more than happy to stay close; the pair had bonded quite a bit on their journey back. So as the run down building came into sight, he increased the pressure of his legs and Silence picked up the pace. As usual, he felt his body jarred around by the jaunty gait and he gripped a little tighter to try and keep his balance. It was a difficult but necessary practise for him, because he found he quite liked the freedom of no saddle and bridle. "Lennie? You home?" He called as he got closed, decreasing the pressure so that the horse came to walk and then with a low 'woah' he got the black horse to stand still for him to dismount.

Lena hadn't been up to much since Temeraire had left on his trip to Freetown -- she had the occasional conversation with others within the pack, and had a meeting with her northern mentor to brush up on her staff skills, but other than that, she had been to herself. She had explored the last of the nooks and crannies of the territory they now lived in, and she could then proudly declare that she knew where most things were within the Court and some areas beyond it. The familiarity helped when she walked about the worn paths, now with confidence and with more wisdom as she avoided the obvious roots and dips she had then memorized. Still she tripped over the things she hadn't tripped over before, but she learned and stored the information in her head.

She had dug around one of the abandoned houses in Lunenburg to plunder any worthy items from the dusty depths earlier that day. All she had came up with was a dress that must have had been made by Luperci, since it wasn't small like human clothing would be, though it was way too long for the short girl to wear, along with a bottle half filled with some sort of alcohol that had found it's place underneath a drawer. Lena wasn't familiar with drinks, but guessed it was wine. She wasn't entirely excited about finding the alcohol, but she didn't want to leave it where it was, supposing she could use the bottle after she done something with the liquid.

She had returned from her little trip and had been home for about five minutes when she heard a voice from outside. A grin spread itself over her face, and after carefully climbing down the stairs and making her way to the front door, she greeted him. How was the trip? Did you scrap your knee, or perhaps your elbow this time? she asked teasingly as she leaned against the door frame, remarking about the last time he went on a trip, where he returned with a wound. Her nose twitched as she scented something new, and she tilted her head to the side a bit. Got a new ride, huh? What's his name?

:D [500]

As he was beginning to expect now, dismounting from Silence was a painless process and the black gelding proceeded to standing nice and still once he'd rid himself of his new owner. The lazy swish of his tail was the only sound as the horse swatted away a few pesky flies resting periodically on his rump, but otherwise he remained quiet and still. Temeraire still looked at his horse like there was something wrong with him and he often had his doubts. But there was no argument that he was smart, so he gave the equine a pat on the neck and turned at the sound of an opening door. Blue eyes fell on the female and an answering grin lit up his face. Though he knew she couldn't see him, he couldn't help it; her teasing greeting caused a snicker from the dark male. He'd returned last time with a great gash on the back of his thigh, a wound that had become infected and now resulted in a newly pink scar. "Nah, not this time. I'm sure you'll get the opportunity to play Nurse Lena sometime else though." He offered back, the taunt obvious in his voice.

He was reminded how much the girl relied on her other senses as her nose twitched, catching the distinct horse smells coming from himself and Silence before she commented. Encouraging the horse forward with a nudge to its shoulder, he came to a stop closer to the house. "His name is Silence." He offered, trying to keep his tone even and serious. He knew he might be met with a few odd looks for the name of his horse, but now that Tem had had the chance to travel across the country with him he couldn't have named him better. "He's a very quiet horse." He tried, almost as if to justify the horses name. With a laugh, he darted forward and tried to scoop the girl up in an embrace. Every time he returned from various trips, he was always struck with how much he'd missed her.

"I got you a present" He murmured against her ear, strong arms squeezing her tight before he replaced her on the ground. The backpack that Tem had fashioned from a elk pelt was loose on his back and he hoped that none of the contents had fallen on the ride down. He slipped it off and dropped down to the ground, searching until the cool metal touched his fingers. He caught himself just before he told her to close her eyes; she couldn't see anyway. Straightening, he touched her ears briefly to let her know he was putting something over her head. The small necklace settled higher up than the girls Frithr necklace, the silver circle with its star in the middle set off nicely by the darkness of her fur. "Its a star necklace, here have a feel." He offered, releasing the necklace so she might explore it with her own hands.

(376) for some reason their hug just gave me feels like i don't know why??

She mocked a frown, and groaned playfully, Aw, and I was so looking forward to playing doctor! Guess I was excited for nothing. All teasing aside, she was truly happy that he had a peaceful, normal trip this time. She'd rather that than for him to come home battered with an infected wound or worse. But, Lena didn't sweat much over the possibilities, too busy focusing on Temeraire's return to think of anything else.

The horse was quiet, and if she didn't have a good nose on her, she probably wouldn't have had noticed it was there. Usually the horses she came across would be loudly snuffling or grunting, or at least pawing the earth to give some sign they were there, but this one was almost elusive to the blind girl. But again, she didn't think much of it -- as much as she knew about horses, she supposed some were quiet, just like some canines were. Silence? she echoed, and cracked a grin, Well, he lives up to his name; I can barely hear a peep from him, and I -- She was cut off by laughter, and before she could retreat inside, she was ensnared in the boy's grip. She let out a surprised squeak that bubbled into laughter and hugged him back around his neck. She really had missed him.

Lena's laugh was dying down when Temeraire whispered in her ear, and she blinked in surprise before she was squeezed (which pulled another cheerful squeal from her) and placed back upon the ground. She stood, facing him as it seemed that he was digging around in his bag for something. Before long she felt his fingers brush against her ears, and even more curious, she pressed her ears down softly against her head as he slipped something around her. Again she blinked as she was explained to what it was, and she rose a hand to feel it. It had a strange shape, something she never felt before, and it made her puzzled. Is this what stars looked like? she asked, trying to form a picture from the shape she was observing. Lena never really thought about stars before, but now they piqued her interest as she now had one hanging from her neck.

awwh, the feeeels [469]

Her groan and frown caused a predictable snicker from the boy before her complaint. If he was honest, he enjoyed Lena playing doctor a little too much. Although he didn't like to be vulnerable, the care and attention it earned him was something he rarely passed up. With a wicked grin, he glanced briefly over at Silence before turned his attention back to the girl. "Well, I'm sure I could convince Silence to step on my toe or something?" He questioned with an easy grin. His relationship with Lena was timeless; no matter how much they argued or ran away from each other, coming back was like taking a breath after being under water for so long. Relieving and necessary. Before he could comment any further on Lena's nursing skills, she picked up on his horses name. She sounded disbelieving and he chuckled softly before she agreed with him. He really was a quiet horse but Temeraire had had enough of the distance and swooped forward to scoop the girl up.

As always, feeling their bodies pressed together triggered a more primal need in him and her tinkling laugh caused his abdomen to clench briefly in anticipation. Before he could get inappropriate, he'd revealed his gift and let her down. It was a good opportunity to grapple with his lust and as he rummaged for the present in his bag he informed his libido to calm down. Lena was his friend and he couldn't treat her like those other females. Placing the necklace over her head, however, caused a swell of pride and possession in his chest. He'd given her the necklace and now she wore something that he'd bought for her. Although nobody else would understand, he would look upon the star at her throat with a possessive air. Her fingers reached up to touch it, feeling the contours and sharp edges of the star before her quiet words caused his brow to furrow.

She'd never seen the stars before and for a brief moment, his breath caught in sympathy for the girl. The nightsky was beautiful and Lena would never have the chance to see it. Briefly touching her cheek, he smiled softly down at her. "They're too far away to see, other than pinpricks of bright light against the dark sky." He murmured gently so that the timbre of his voice was low. "But I guess people think this is what they look like." He reasoned with a smile. "I picked up a bag of herbs as well, I don't know what they are but I thought you might use them." He offered, turning back and scooping the small bag from his larger sack. Cupping her hand, he placed the bag in it and waited to see if she liked the herbs he'd found for her.

(462) clutches heart and weeps while laying on the ground

She laughed at his suggestion and gave a crooked smile. But I don't think I have anything to treat such foolhardiness, she said almost sadly with a shrug of her shoulders, as if to be caught unprepared for such a situation was embarrassing. Besides, the horse stepping on his toes seemed unlikely, even if it'd be a funny event to witness firsthand. Sometimes it was difficult to believe that this pair had ever fought, with the way they bantered back and forth as if an ill word was never shared between them. Even Lena, thinking only in the moment, forgotten about the past few months and her mind was caught up in the hug without second thought.

Normally she would be nervous being swept off the ground like that, liking what stability she had, but she felt as sure in his arms as she was on her two feet. While she wouldn't openly admit it, she liked hugging Temeraire, and any other form of contact, really. It compensated for not being able to see him, and it was a definitely better than standing from afar and simply hearing his voice. But, as she was placed down back onto the earth, she made sure not to be clingy, not wanting him to read it the wrong way; she was reminded of the months before, and became more mindful, but at the same time did not let it get to her. She wanted to enjoy the moment, after all.

She was a bit confused as she heard his breath catch, but she didn't think much of it as she felt his hand against her face. She was quiet as she tried to imagine what he was describing -- things smaller than the tip of a needle decorating the space above them. Then how did everyone think they were this shape? Did someone see one up close or something? Lena was even more puzzled than before, and as she was silently trying to figure the riddle out when Temeraire revealed a second gift. Blank eyes went wide again and she did not protest as he cupped her hands to place the bag within them. She brought the bag up to her nose, and scents, some familiar and some completely foreign, hit her nose, and her tail waved at the sensation.

These are perfect, Tem! she claimed with pure cheer, and careful not to spill the bag, hopped forward to embrace him around his torso, too short to properly hug him around his neck like she wanted, but she would settle on what she could do to express her joy. We have to make a garden with these soon, if we can! Lena stated, her mind already buzzing ahead as it filled with thought of the herbs.

awwh, the feeeels [488]

Her laugh always caused him to relax, an exhalation of breath that relaxed his shoulders and the tenseness in his limbs. Even with her teasing him, taunting him or otherwise issuing a challenge of some kind, the fact that she was still here seemed to soothe the male. Consciously, he didn't think about the fact that he'd hurt her, that he'd slept with her and then put her on a pedestal. One of the things neither of them realised was his idolisation of her, how he'd had his first time with her and then put her above the rest. Holding her against him even if it was briefly relaxed him further, his nose pressed firmly into the girls fur. He didn't care that he took in a deep breath, sniffing eagerly at her fur. He wouldn't admit it, but subconsciously he was searching, for another scent on her, someone else she'd let in. He didn't actively think about it, but when he found nothing but her own sweet smell he released her and went to gather her items.

She was quiet as he put the necklace on, the slight pity in the catch of his throat that she'd never seen the nightsky. And unbidden, there was a brief clench in his fingers, that she didn't know what he looked like. Or their home, the lands they lived in; anything. But as he handed over the pouch, joy lit up her face and her nose took in a deep pull of the scents coming from the seeds. He had no idea what they were, but he'd assumed correctly that Lena would. Her confirmation that they were just right had him grinning eagerly from ear to ear, even as she suggested making a garden. "I'll dig you a garden Lennie, just outside the house." He was eager to please her, blue eyes already sweeping the slightly rocky ground to try and find a large enough area to dig out a patch of earth she could use to grow these herbs. He knew first hand that she was a good caretaker, a rueful smile on his lips as he thought of the way he'd got it.

Briefly, guilt flashed on his mind but he pushed it aside. Considering the explosive way she'd reacted to his other encounter, he didn't think she needed to know about the black and white female. "I caught up with my family again on the way through..." He paused, the slight pain for his father making his heart pulse for a moment. "Lilin left him and took Lund away to live with another pack somewhere... Dad's heartbroken." He huffed, frustration at being unable to help his only parent when he was hurting. "Vinátta is becoming the land of single parents." He snorted with a soft shake of his head, nose reaching out to touch her neck as if to use her as support for his own frustration.

(406)

She thought she sensed something within the boy, and decidedly did not mention it, and tried to put it out of mind. But, Lena could guess what he was thinking. While she didn't think Temeraire thought of anything about her blindness, especially after all the time they'd been around each other, she couldn't help but feel suddenly conscious about it now when they were talking about the stars and she thought he must have had felt guilty about not seeing them, or something. However, it was easy not to be bothered and to forget about it; after all, stars weren't entirely a big deal, and she didn't want to fuss about it now and spoil the moment.

She grinned became broader as Temeraire stated he would dig her a garden. A garden -- I never thought I would have one of my own. Moving often before, the thought of a garden seemed unreasonable to her when in the end it would have been abandoned as she would have moved on to wherever she would go next. But, now that they were settled in the pack, and also having hold on herbs that were most likely not of these lands, starting her own garden was a possibility. It'd be odd at first, having to get used to the thought that the plot of land wouldn't be Drin's or her mother's, but she knew she'd get used to it. Let's start tomorrow, 'kay? Afterwards we can eat berries or something!

Before she could be completely distracted by the thought of the garden, Temeraire spoke again, this time about his family. Her thoughts became quiet as he took a pause, and tried to prepare herself for whatever he had to say. She was informed, and Lena frowned a little at the news. Another Grace, she thought, except Lilin took one of his half-siblings along with her. She didn't know the female particularly well, but she didn't like to hear that his dad wasn't taking it well. She breathed a slight laugh to humor the boy's remark, and she felt his wet nose against her neck. Lena wasn't entirely sure what to say, how to comfort him. I'm sorry, Teme, she said with a small smile, reaching to hold his arm in reassurance. Saul isn't really alone, though; he's got the rest of your family there, and mine. He'll find his way through it. Maybe. She didn't know how it was to be abandoned.
