First day of my life.

for Teme!

(359) :D

Impatiently, she stomped her foot and huffed. Her head swiveled to look at her mother, who was nearby and temporarily paying very little attention to the princess's "urgent" need to do things. At nearly four months (she preferred that to "three months going on four months"), she felt that she should have more freedom than she did. After all, she was a third of the way to adulthood (or a quarter of the way, if you stuck with three months). Clearly she should have at least half of her freedom by now! Since, after all, she would be able to shift in just a few months. Which seemed so far away and yet so close. Time was a fluid and odd thing to the pup, but she understood it to some degree. All she knew was that she had been little and still was little, but would get bigger and eventually would be allowed to do everything she wanted. Being an adult sounded so glamorous, though she thought that the adults she knew wasted their freedom. They just still hung out around the house or had puppies and got stuck there! What fun was that?

Looking slantwise at her mother, she noticed that Rio was looking away still. The girl wasn't normally quite so improper in her mannerisms - stomping wasn't ladylike at all - but she felt the childish need to get off the porch and in the sweet soft grass. Valencia leaped to the ground, making as little noise as possible as she walked away from her home. Eager to get out into somewhere more fun, where she could explore and find something interesting to do. Maybe hang out with someone other than her mother and father. As awesome as they were, sometimes it got so tiring to just do the same things all the time. Adults tended to be boring like that. Eat, hunt, do some other random stuff, never having fun. Tasha was the most fun wolf she had ever met, but she didn't think her cousin was around right now. Which was a shame, because she'd love to play princess and queen some more.

459 yaaay aiming for about 1500-2000 word count for this entire thread, bear with me!

The warmth of the day spread down over the dark males back, heating his skin and giving him a drowsy feeling that made his eyelids heavy. Rarely ever found in his Lupus form anymore, the shadow prince had deigned to use four paws today. Laying on his side in front of the house he shared with Lena, a rough pant lifted his chest and a small drop of moisture had gathered at the edge of his nose. It was a lazy day today, but even he could feel the ache in his bones, to get up and do something. He had perhaps inherited his fathers veritable shaky-leg syndrome and while lazy mornings were fine, he couldn't remain immobile for longer than a few hours. Early, he'd left the house without many words to the dark girl, feeling the tension of not being in synch once again permeating the house. He realised now that what he'd done had been spiteful and cruel, not only to Lena but to Tasha as well. He'd led the girl on and likely taken her virginity, which was a big deal for some.

His thoughts soured, the dark Squire lifted his body from the floor, dropping down into a stretch that ended in a wide yawn, tongue curling briefly as his head shook with the force of it. A rough shake of his fur was given to rid himself of the debris that had been caught in the strands before he was moving once more. His nose led him swiftly towards a source of water, the pure scent drawing him nearer until he came across a fast running stream. Stepping in, the dark male took a long drink, before he glanced up and caught sight of a vaguely familiar body. It took a moment for Temeraire to piece together the image in his mind, of the tiny bundle Rio had had with her when they'd met in the meadow with the rambunctious child that had caught his sight before. While it often seemed as though the dark male was indifferent to others and had little time for fun and games, he found a slow smile spreading across his jaws.

He didn't know the girls name, but he could only assume she was fleeing from her mother and with a rough snort that he hoped she didn't see, he slunk over and slipped behind the girl in a wide circle, using his smaller lupus form and the tall grass to hide. His grin tugged his lips and he had to clench his teeth together to stop the laughter. All at once, he burst from the grass, a roar erupting from his lips as he pounced towards the girl, hoping the scare the life out of her.

(462) LOL this thread is going to be awesome. XD

She had managed to get away from her mother's general area, which meant that she would not be forced to sit and do something more mundane. Like reciting verbs in French or Italian, practicing her bows, or otherwise acting in a way that was proper. It was all so dull after a while, though she knew it was also important so that she acted in a particular way when she was around certain types of wolves. Certainly she thought that it had helped her when she had been with Queen Charlotte a couple of weeks ago. Her behavior had been perfect, and she had made a good impression. This might help her when she was an adult, she thought, and they were looking at wolves to promote. Especially if she kept at her practicing. That didn't mean she had to like the practice itself or that she truly understood how much benefit it was giving her.

Her nostrils flared and she snorted as she sniffed at a spot where a mouse skeleton lay, having decomposed into the ground. It was a bit surprising to her that the creature hadn't been eaten, bones and all. After all, wolves could practically swallow mice without even really needing to chew. Wouldn't an owl or something pick up a mouse that died to eat it? The skeleton seemed whole, though. She poked at it with a paw and it shifted, some pieces breaking off. They were delicate when not contained within a body, susceptible to her prodding. Valencia huffed, satisfied with her inspection of the skeleton before she moved on toward the water she knew was nearby. Maybe she could go swimming! Though she knew for sure that was dangerous alone, she was already in trouble. Why not get into even more trouble while she was at it?

Being a child and thus, rather oblivious in general, she had no idea that he was sneaking up on her. As much as she would like to be thought of as so very smart and mature, there were many things that slipped through the cracks of her awareness. So when he leaped out of the underbrush and roared, she squealed and crouched low. The instinct to flee kicked in and she turned to run away, having seen only a very dark big thing leaping toward her. Though it could very well have been her mother or some other dark packmate (which it was), the girl had no idea what it was. Her body told her to run away as fast as her legs could take her from that spot before whatever it was decided she would be a tasty snack. Which really wasn't that fast, but hey, no one said it had been the most logical of choices!

He should have suspected the girl would run. It wouldn't have been a normal response for her to stand and fight, but he caught the brief moment where the girl had hunkered down into the ground, instinct telling her to get smaller. And then the flight response kicked in and she darted out and away from him. He'd spent many of his days running around with Elias and later Ink, but he was in a similar situation to the girl now. He didn't have any siblings, who taught you all sorts of things. Self defence was probably the highest on that list, protecting yourself from your siblings who had no mercy in tipping you over and exposing your belly. He'd never experienced that; Elias had been a sweet natured boy and was scared more often than Teme was. His father had always been a bit preoccupied and the times they had played, it had been chasing games or hiding games. Uncle Niernan and Bran had brought a little bit of rough to their games and Uncle Niernan had been the first to show him just how dangerous it was to wander outside the pack on his own when he didn't know how to defend himself.

A brief shudder ruffled his fur as he thought of his Uncles rather unconventional way of teaching him about self defence, out in an abandoned warehouse in Amherst. But his paws were picking up the pace hard as a rough laugh came from him. Better watch your mamma don't catch you, running like a bat out of hell. He called after her, unable to stop the amusement colouring his voice. In a few bounds and leaps the dark male had caught up with the scampering princess and he tried to step in front of her to stop her flight. Come now, little Princess. Thats no way to play, is is? He asked, deep voice rumbling with amusement. He'd meant to scare her, but many did respond by lashing out; it was clear the girl had good strong instincts to run. Then again, she was still young and he supposed it made sense for her to get away from whatever had scared her, she didn't have any other way of responding to it. Perhaps he shouldn't have scared her like that, but it was an opportunity he couldn't pass up.

Was it a bear!? The mere idea shot terror through her muscles and kept her running, though she felt winded already with breaths huffing out of her in quick pants rather than her normal pacing. It wasn't often that she ran like this, so she wasn't used to it at all. There were paws coming along behind her, she panicked and was about ready to try and do something drastic (turn around, run into some bushes, leap into the nearest lake?) when she heard a voice. That slowed her a bit and she skidded to a stop entirely when an adult stepped in front of her. An unfamiliar, dark adult with gray tipped ears. She was panting heavily, trying to get her breath back to its normal pacing with wide eyes staring. This was the big dark thing that had jumped out at her? It was just a packmate, an adult male wolf who would normally have just drawn curiosity from the blue-eyed girl. Clearly it had been him, though, since he had stopped her from running and said something about bats. She hadn't heard all of that, so she wasn't sure what all had been said. There was no time to ask, though. Right now she had to get oxygen to her lungs.

As soon as she had a semi-reasonable breathing pattern back, she stood up straighter and looked at him with a little frown. It was hard to look serious while still panting, she had learned, so she had to wait until she was able to close her mouth. Her brow drew together a bit, too, and she raised her tail. Trying to give him the you've done something wrong look that her mother gave her when she went scampering off. "When you are going to play, you let the other wolf know you want to play. You don't just scare their rumps off!" she scolded loudly, not caring that she wasn't being ladylike. He had scared her and the princess was not pleased, not in the slightest. It had to be clear to him that this was the case, even if that meant that she had to be stern with him. When you misbehaved, it was the only way to convey that you were in trouble. At least that was how it went for her.

Her necessary serious statement made, she relaxed her body just a little bit. Relieved that, at least, she wasn't about to be eaten. That was a good thing, even if she was now accompanied by a rude packmate. "Who are you, anyway?" she asked.

He had to hand it to the little girl, she could really run. It was just unfortunate that she wasnt yet old enough to truly run away from him. In a few months she'd resemble something more of an adolescent and in a few more after that she would practically be as big as an adult anyway with only slightly larger ears and paws to display her age. For now though, the young Princess was still small and he could still run to easily catch up with her. His words seemed to have done the trick and the girl skidded to a halt, the rough pant practically shaking her young body about. He remembered when he'd been that small and he'd spent hours romping around with Elias or on occasion his father. It was good to know that the girl was safe and that she could do as she pleased, but he also knew that it might not always be like this. Blue eyes took in her face, the fierce little scowl upon her lips and the disapproving look causing a quickly stifled snicker from his lips.

Her scolding words rose his eyebrows and he did everything he could not to burst out laughing. Clamping his teeth together to stop even a grin from breaking loose, he nodded as if she were talking wise words. Which he supposed she was in some ways, he should perhaps have asked if she would have liked to play but the opportunity to scare her had been too good to miss. Well you're a tough cookie, aren't ya? He questioned, a grin now breaking out on his lips. It seemed that once she'd gotten her scolding out, she relaxed a bit and questioned who he was. I'm Temeraire, a friend of your mamma's. And Squire of the pack. He offered, knowing she might be able to relate more if she knew he was a friend of her mothers. Of course, he used that term lightly, because he'd met Rio only a few times and considered her a potential lay in the future, but he wasn't about to inform the girl of such things.

So, you wanna play a game? He questioned, before an idea popped into his mind. What about a game of damsels and dragons? He asked, blue eyes dancing with excitement. If he could teach her how to defend herself, it was certainly a useful life skill that she'd possibly remember in the future.

(373) Gahhhh why am I so lucky to have two super inspiring threads with youu? *loves on*

He seemed to take her stern warning well, which was good, because she would have probably huffed off if he had laughed in her face. When he called her a tough cookie, she crinkled her nose and tipped her head to the side with a puzzled narrowing of her eyes. "What is a 'tough cookie'?" she asked. Of course she knew what tough was, but she didn't know what a cookie was. She liked the idea of being tough, though, just like her daddy. She was a beautiful princess but that didn't mean she was a pushover. Though she did like the idea of a charming prince someday sweeping her off her feet. Maybe when her and Essie went over the sea, they would meet princes and be wooed.

When he gave his name, she considered it carefully. "Temeraire." she said slowly, trying to make sure she pronounced each part correctly. "You know my mama? How come I haven't met you?" she asked suspiciously. Of course her mother had loads of friends, Rio was a beautiful and popular viscountess. If he was a Squire, too, that meant he had risen in the ranks so he couldn't be all bad. "I'm Valencia, but I guess maybe you already know that." she remarked, then raised her head and bowed with abrupt politeness. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Squire Temeraire." the words were said with a dainty little nod. Yes, she was quite regal when she tried and wolves weren't scaring her half to death.

Then he asked her if she wanted to play in a more appropriate way and she smiled in approval, giving him a nod that showed she appreciated that he could learn the appropriate behavior. "Sure!" she said, brightly. "You're the damsel, I'm the dragon. RAWWRRR!" and with a "fierce" puppy growl, she leaped toward the damsel that looked like the tastiest meal that the "dragon" had ever seen. "I'm going to eat your feettttt!" strangely, despite the odd beginning to their meeting, this was the most childlike that she had acted in a very long time. Maybe it was his uncouth entrance into her day that made her comfortable dropping the politeness and sweetness for a ferocious dragon character.

As was the way with pups, the first words from the girls mouth was a question and Temeraire had to think about the answer for the moment before a rough shrug lifted his shoulders. I don't know, its just something my dad used to say to me. He explained, wishing he'd questioned what this 'cookie' was when he'd heard it for the first time. It didn't seem to matter too much though, because the little princess had moved on to trying to pronounce his name. He remembered her mother had had problems and he'd made it easier for her by informing her of various nicknames that had been used. As soon as she'd sounded it out, she latched onto the next bit of information she'd heard. The simple joy of a curious pup, their minds jumping from one bit of information to the other and back again. Your mamma doesn't speak about me? She should, I think she's in love with me. He taunted, the wide grin on his lips and the flash of his white tipped tail indicating his jest although he wasn't certain the girl would get it.

She introduced herself, assuming he already knew her name. In fact, Tem couldn't remember if Rio had introduced him to the tiny bundle that had been in her arms and if she had, he wasn't certain he remembered the name in the first place. It didn't matter too much though, because he'd just been reminded and he found his head dipping briefly. And then just like that, the fearful and bossy princess shifted into something a little more civilised as she offered pleasure in meeting him, along with his full title. It seemed the young Princess had been taught well in manners and the custom of titles because her words were flawless. Flashing a deeper grin, he lowered his head briefly, nose jutting out to touch her shoulder or other such body part. The pleasure is mine, Princess Valencia. He spoke with a grave solemnity, though the twinkle in his bright blue eyes would have told someone older that he was humouring the girl.

His suggestion of play seemed to elicit a much more age-appropriate response from the girl, who smiled and nodded before announcing herself as the dragon. A light hearted laugh came from the male as she gave a ferocious puppy growl, announcing her intentions as she came forward. Sucking up any illusions of manhood he had, the male flattened his ears and quaked his legs, a high pitched squeal of 'terror' coming from his lips. Oh no! Not my feet, I need them for... uh, dancing! I need them for dancing. He pleased, darting out of the way as the girl came for him.

Who said things that they didn't even understand? Valencia wrinkled her nose in silent confusion. It really wasn't important in the grand scheme of things, though, and it wasn't like he would figure it out if she kept asking more questions about it. So it made sense to transition to his name When he said that her mother was in love with him, she gasped audibly and stood up very stiffly. "My mother, Viscountess Rio Marino certainly does not love you. She loves my dad, Count Liam Catori! Why do y-" her mouth stopped mid-word, though, as she caught the way his tail flicked and his teeth showed in a grin. "Oh. You were teasing." she said with a half-relieved, half-annoyed that he had played her like that. As a cub, she certainly didn't pick up on this kind of humor as quickly as an adult would have. At least she had figured it out, though! That crafty Squire.

He was mocking her and she knew it when he bowed, his eyes twinkling with humor. As if politeness and manners were something to joke about! Not that she should be too surprised, given the way he had begun their meeting. This was a distinct reason there was no way that her mother would ever have been in love with a wolf like this. It also explained why they hadn't been introduced before. He was nicer than Basil, but he was also a bit uncouth like the Butler boy. She merely bobbed her head sweetly in response, not showing that she had noticed the silent mockery in his actions. They mattered to her.

The male was quick to play along with the game, anyway, and the blue-eyed girl laughed in a carefree way as he flattened his ears and let his legs shake. Then she tried to look fierce again, woofing wordlessly at him as she nipped at his face to show she didn't care about his need to dance. "No more dancing for you, princess! You'll get eaten and live in my belly, where it's full of other princesses and some knights too!" she barked, leaping toward him again. Trying to jump toward his shoulder so that she could sprawl herself over his back and use her weight (which was really not significant) to push him to the ground. If he was a proper princess, though, he would have no strength to keep himself up if a dragon jumped on him. Then again, she was a proper princess and she would have fought back.

The little girl took the bait as he'd suspected and tried to defend her mother fiercely. It was the first time he'd heard mention of her father though, Rio hadn't mentioned her mate at all in the few times he'd met her. It made him suspect that the good Viscountess might be up for a little fun away from the family home, but he'd have to test those waters when it came to it. Valencia was gearing herself up for a full argument when his grin alerted him to the jest he'd given her and she pointed it out, looking perhaps a little relieved or embarrassed, he couldn't quite tell. Deciding against taking the joke further, but having more than enough ammunition to do so if he wished, he allowed himself to play the game with her. She might have been a serious little princess but that didn't stop her opening up and playing for a bit.

She snapped at his face, playing along perfectly as she spoke of eating him and adding him to the collection of princesses and knights in her belly before leaping towards his shoulders. He dodged out of the way, head lowered to butt into her. She was small and he opened his jaws wide, trying to catch hold of the little girl in a surprise attack from the 'princess'. What if the princess wasn't a damsel in distress, but a warrior princess? He challenged, paws aiming to knock the 'dragon' onto the ground so that he could roll her over. You have to be prepared, Valencia. He pressured, knowing she had no defences set and very little knowledge of battle aside from these play-fights.
