For Leon! <3
Word Count → 376 Sophie wanted to speak up. There was almost a physical need building in her chest to say something, somewhat inspired by the whimpers coming from Boothe, whom she could occasionally see out of the corner of her eye as they swung back and forth in the hands of their father, hanging by the scruffs of their necks as they had for most of their lives--or at least as long as it took to make this journey. She really couldn't take much more of this, the pain from being held this way making her eyes water. But if she spoke up, it would only get worse; she knew that much. So Sophie simply wrapped her legs tighter around Bug, clamping one of his arms between her teeth, and tried to keep quiet. She didn't want to anger Daire any more than he already was, and she hoped that maybe, if she and Boothe kept quiet and were well-behaved enough, maybe Daddy would put them down soon. And then, maybe, if she was really lucky, he would just leave them wherever he set them down and never, ever come back. But Sophie knew better than to get her hopes up. They soon came across an area that smelled awfully strange--familiar, but not; a scent that she sometimes remembered from that time, long ago, with the nice woman who'd given her Bug and the cozy little den they'd been forced to leave far too soon. It had been small and hard to notice, then; it practically covered this area. She wondered why that was, but didn't have much time to find out, as at that moment Daire dropped them to the ground and she was more concerned with landing in a way that would cause less harm to her body. As soon as she was certain she was unharmed--aside from that slight twinge in her legs, and the limp that followed--she scurried over to huddle next to Boothe, both puppies staring wide-eyed up at their terrorist as he began muttering angry, sometimes obscene words. When he pointed a large finger at them and said, "Stay!" in his sharpest voice, coupled with a frightening glare, neither puppy dared do anything but what he said. . Life goes on, it gets so heavy

The two Hughes boys awoke completely startled within their spacious den and immediately tensed. Leon sat up and Trigger stood and the boys looked toward the entrance with worried, wide eyes. All Daire had to do was breathe and they'd know he was around, but the sharp voice, his angry, demanding one, had easily woken the two from their deep, restful slumber. Already their breathing was hitching in their chests; they continued to sit there until the scents wafted their way into the den. Daire was here. And... so were two others. Puppies. Both of them looked at each other, still wide-eyed, before quickly exiting the den and coming out of the brush in time for Daire to stop right in front of them, causing both young men to jump like they'd just been shocked with electricity or struck.

Word Count → 344 Sophie whimpered as Daire's attention turned to other things, and though she was curious as to what had caught his eye, she didn't dare take her eyes off him; she wanted to know when to dodge. Boothe was not so frightened, trusting his sister to warn him when their father's attention imminently turned back to them. The young boy's eyes traveled over Sophie's shoulder and met with the two strange males, causing the timid male to whimper slightly and tuck closer to his sister. Sophie tucked Bug under his chin, and together they cuddled the doll and each other, frightened and confused by all the strange happenings around them. Sophie's vision of Daire's man-handling Leon was quite suddenly blocked by a tawny male, and she made a small "eep"ing noise in the back of her throat, ducking her head under Bug's body and shaking uncontrollably. Boothe whimpered beside her, and then barked at Trigger, his ears pressing against his head and his eyes narrowing as he shifted a bit to be in front of the younger Sophie. Neither one of them seemed to have heard Trigger's soothing words; "older" and "male" automatically meant "danger" to them, and had for as long as they could remember. Not that Trigger looked much older...not as old as Leon, or Daire. But Boothe was still wary, and he nudged and bullied his sister into moving away from the hazel-eyed male warily, standing protectively in front of her and her doll. Sophie weaseled her head under his belly to stare at the three males--the older couple having been visible over Trigger's head, if she tilted her head just slightly up--and then pressed her ears against her head, chomping nervously on Bug's leg. Her eyes flickered from the fight going on a little bit away to the male who was watching them and back, but there was no light of understanding in her eyes. As far as she was concerned, there had been no shining light of salvation; things had just gotten more dangerous. . Life goes on, it gets so heavy

He looked at little Boothe when he growled, but said nothing. He did try to make his expression as obviously friendly and concerned as he could-- a far cry from the snarls on Leon and Daire's faces.

Word Count → 389 The tawny male followed the two of them, making Boothe growl again, but Sophie nudged her brother's ribs and nipped him lightly as Trigger spoke, her wide eyes following him curiously. Daire and his look-alike were getting more and more violent behind the larger male, but Sophie's eyes were more focused on the one who kept saying that word, 'safe', and confusing her. She rubbed her nose on her leg thoughtfully, still half-hidden beneath her brother, while Boothe kept his ears pressed against his head and his lips pulled back, being as threatening as a puppy could possibly be.
The two young ones' eyes were drawn to the object flying through the air a moment later as Trigger leaped up and snatched it, their ears flattening and the two huddling together for entirely different reasons as they saw the dreaded weapon. Daire had threatened them with it on occasion, on the journey; they'd learned to fear the knife, and seeing it now made Sophie whimper and Boothe growl like a little motor. They hardly saw Leon threatening Daire, Sophie only tearing her gaze away when the oldest male was finally gone.
Leon approached, and she hunched down and whimpered at his bloody, frightening face, retreating until only the tip of her nose was visible from beneath her brother's body. Boothe himself hovered uncertainly, and then scrambled until he no longer stood protectively in front of his baby sister, but huddled beside her, forcing her to become visible for a moment before they both burrowed under the ever-creepy Bug, the doll being so large compared to their small bodies that it was very easy for only their backsides to be visible after a short time. The twins whined to each other, then Sophie burrowed far enough so that her head peeked out on the other side of her doll, her eyes blinking up at Leon just as he ruffled Trigger's fur and introduced himself.
Her ears flickered uncertainly against her head, though it wasn't visible beneath Bug's body; but as Leon asked for their names, she weaseled a bit more of her head out from under the doll, and pressed them flat against her head, eyeing them warily. Sophie is Sophie. She whimpered finally, very quietly in case they hadn't been addressing her. An'...Boofe is Boofe. Life goes on, it gets so heavy

They were already terrified of others--mostly males, he assumed confidently-- and his friendly smile faded for just a second as the two scrambled oddly under that creepy potato-sack sanddoll. He tilted his head to the side as Sophie poked her head out from under it and introduced herself and her brother. "Boothe?" he asked quietly before nodding his head at the two. Normally he would've been hurt by Boothe's growling, but he understood their caution and fear, so he didn't let it get to him. He was upset by how both were so fearful and he could only hope that fear would fade in time, or he would be hurt. He was incredibly sensitive to and around puppies, and his heart ached for the young wolves. "It's nice to meet you both." He nodded and reached forward to gently lift Bug off of them and set it to the side, right next to Sophie, so he didn't take away their security blanket, but he wanted to see them both.

Word Count → 316 Boothe grumbled as the male repeated his name, and then poked his head out beside Sophie's, pressing their cheeks together and giving the older two males the most distrustful look he'd ever delivered. With Daire gone, he felt slightly more daring, as it was clear to him these males didn't like him either; but he didn't want them to turn out like their Father and start yelling or hitting them. Especially Sophie; he was so frightened for his sister, who hardly ever spoke to him and only smiled at her creepy doll, that he'd do anything to protect her now that the oppressive bastard was finally gone.
Leon said words they'd never heard before, and Sophie cocked her head and looked at Boothe for help, who only stuck his tongue out at Leon rather rudely and then attempted to retreat back under Bug, grabbing Sophie's ear to drag her with him. That plan was rather ruined when the gray male lifted the doll away from them, setting it at Sophie's side and leaving them both staring rather wide-eyed at him. Boothe growled again, and bullied Sophie over toward it, but she yipped at him and nipped his nose, making him pout and huddle in on himself. Sophie looked up at the two strange males, blinking slowly at the questions they'd asked.
Faffer. Boothe barked, and then ducked and glared, as though he were going to be struck. Daire hadn't liked that they had yet to learn how to pronounce the "th" sound, making him sound stupid whenever they addressed him--"Faffer", "Fat'her", and the like. Sophie wrinkled her nose at them cutely as they asked a question that was rather harder to unravel, but they said a word that she did recognize--"mommy"-- and she brightened. Mumma! Mumma make Bug! and she turned and clamped her doll's arm between her teeth, dragging it over proudly. Life goes on, it gets so heavy

It almost began to become comical to both their older siblings, but they both remained respectful, not wanting to hurt either's feelings. Boothe answered that Daire was their father, and then Sophie said that momma had made that creepy ass doll. Despite that not being the right answer, Leon knew that they all had the same two parents. He often saw his mother making dolls--normally crude and creepy-- so that made sense. He was surprised Daire hadn't destroyed this one as he did all the others his mother had made. Leon daringly reached out and took the doll in one hand while slipped his other under Sophie, lifting her carefully and bringing the girl safely to his chest. Trigger moved over to Boothe and gently licked his cheek and rested his head between his own large paws to look at him, trying to look as nonthreatening as possible.

Word Count → 172 Sophie blinked as Leon explained they were her brothers, and said a strange word--'family.' She hadn't learned that one yet, and only stared curiously as she was scooped up, along with Bug, and cradled close to Leon's chest. Boothe was just as confused, having always related the word "brother" as himself, but now it also meant these two...he stared at them, and then mimicked Trigger's position, putting his head between his paws and staring at the large nose in front of him before carefully pressing them together, and licking his...brother's...snout.
Sophie watched the interaction, and then again as Boothe was lifted into Leon's arms, too, and they were cuddled close to their brothers' cheeks. Sophie gave him a shy lick, her ears flicking uncertainly, and then blinking as her lick was returned. Her fluffy tail wagged curiously and she turned to give Trigger a lick, too, barking happily. Boothe kicked and wiggled happily, and the two youngest siblings thoughtfully wondered if things were looking up, after all. Life goes on, it gets so heavy
- Leon Hughes - 12-15-2011
http://i776.photobucket.com/albums/yy46 ... ontab1.png); background-position: top center; background-repeat: no-repeat;"> </style> Leon ignored the pain in his face and side and arm, and ignored the fact that his bloody cheek was getting baby Sophie bloody; she didn't seem to mind as she licked him and Trigger, and Boothe began to wiggle and squirm in his grip. The two seemed to relax much more and become more happy, which caused the other boys to relax as well. Trigger hid the concern for Leon until later and Leon hid the pain so he didn't worry or scare any of his three siblings. He was tough, anyways, but getting so severely cut was a new thing on him. Daire usually beat him with his fists, so he was used to that. This? This pain was sharper and stung as the cold air got into his still-bleeding wounds. He'd doctor that up later and go see if he could find Swentzle to help, since he was a healer and had herbs and knew what to do more than Leon and Trigger.
