The day began as it always did, with a striking ray of light and a forceful nudge to greet the day. Twice now she had been forced to rise in this manner, and twice she had forced herself back down to sleep. It was too early... At least this was what she continued to tell herself. Just a few more minutes and she would be ready. Why could her caretaker not see this? But a final forceful nip to her scruff thwarted her continued attempts and with an irritable growl, she was made to rise and join the rest of the Exultare pups in training.
X'yro was there of course, wide awake and scoffing with disapproval for how the young pup presented herself. Unkempt with shaggy mane, her eyes cornered with sleep and lumbering along in a stride that conveyed her dislike of being woken so early. The sibling's glances met for a moment before her brother looked away with disdain. She needn't ask why he would chose to look away from her, for she already knew. She did not look at all as she should have; a proud child of the family High Shepard. While her brother had strove hard to maintain this air of importance, the first born seemed content to squander this rite and act as though the path she was made to lead meant nothing. She was young, naive, truly a pup at heart as it should have been. Why act any different when it was not called for?
But there was only so much of his disdain the female pup was willing to take before she dismissed the day's training all together. Without a word to her brother or caretaker, she wander off down the mountain path seeking something else to bide her time. Perhaps another family member... or some creature to harass. Just something to distract her from the responsibilities she was forced to recognize day after day. <style> .ooctable, .oocinfo { background-image:none; padding:10px; line-height:12px; margin:5px auto; width:85%; background-color:#6d8673; border:1px solid #090905; font-size:10px; color:#090905; border-radius:2px; border-style: dashed; -moz-border-radius:2px; -webkit-border-radius:2px; } .oocinfo { font-size:10px; width:250px; margin:5px; } </style>
- X'ies Lambda - 05-28-2012
Down the rugged path she proceeded, bounding from one protruding formation to another with hesitance as though the stones would give way to her weight and send her sliding down the steep facade. She had yet to learn that what stood weakly atop the surface did not mean it foundations would be weak as well. The lessons of her Shepard was that there was always more than what resided on the surface, but such life lessons were abandoned for a chance to play and explore without the worrisome eye of her caretakers following even her slightest moves.
From a slick stone, she leapt to another, catching its smooth surface as well as unruly mane underpaw. A yelp sounded, disturbing the well preserved calm as she was pulled down from her would-be perch into a skid down the shallow path. She tumbled a little ways down til desperate claws latched onto a merciful stone and slowed her decent. With little heart hammering and paws shaking as they held onto to her saving grace, she whimpered in fright... fearing that the end was a plummet away. If only she had stayed with the family today, she would not be in this mess facing the jagged rocks of death below. She dared not look at her fate, knowing that the sight would only weaken her grasp to bring her to that untimely end. But she was compelled none the less to face the horror that awaited her, and with a trembling muzzle to turned to face her end... about an inch away from her feet.
Oh.
Her forepaws then released and she fell with a sound 'plop' on the ground. All that drama for nothing. The pup lowered both head and ears in shame. No doubt if her brother was there he would have laughed himself silly at the pathetic state the first born had placed herself in and how helpless she looked hanging from a rock. How fortunate he wasn't around.... How lucky was she that no one was around to see.
- X'ies Lambda - 05-28-2012
Of course she wouldn't be able to get through the day without some kind of consequence for neglecting her training. Humiliation tended to be a crueler punishment than a reprimand and surely the ancestors would punish her accordingly. Sat awkwardly on her tail staring at nothing but the ground, she awaited this punishment as she would await the vengeful fangs of her caretaker for her behavior.
She had smelled the other as she was left dangling awaiting her demise and the scent only became stronger as she remained awkwardly positioned on the ground, too embarrassed to move let alone spare her further pain from her weight crushing her precious tail. As he spoke, her ears lowered to mute his words, hoping in vain that if she could not hear him, then perhaps he would disappear and leave her to her embarrassment alone. But again, she was not so lucky to have her childish wish come true. He was still there... and rather patiently at that.
"...not curious," she contested under her breath while curling tighter into herself. Perhaps if she made herself small she could somehow disappear... "...tail hurts..."
- X'ies Lambda - 05-29-2012
She was acting too silly to be taken seriously, no doubt encouraging the laughter that would follow at any moment. When common sense dictated that she pull herself up and brush off the embarrassment, her rump remained planted while she basked in the shameful light of her own doing. Despite her curling into herself in a failed attempt to make herself small, the male pup remained and only inquired more but with an offer to see to her smarting tail. The teachings of her caretaker professed that it was not wrong to seek aid from another, but only when one’s own strength and resources were exhausted.
Politely declining his offer, she shook her head and managed an awkward shuffle to her own four paws. “…’s ok…” she humbled while lowering her head in an effort to hide her stunning amber gaze beneath the poorly managed tuffs of auburn mane. Her tail came to life behind her, raising high and fanning proudly to show that it indeed was alright to move. “See?”
With tail anchored high she neared the male pup with a curious twitch to her nose, entertaining the temporary title bestowed for the sake of answering her own muted questions. Was he a part of the family as well? His coat did not hold the appraised gold of the Exultare elite, nor did he have the pure obsidian shade of the hunters. In the melting pot of colorful hues and tints it was difficult to differentiate by that alone which family he belonged to. Yet from how he spoke, it was clearly not from the more physically inclined. “You are strange,” she assessed the pup in few words then reclined back on her haunches, foregoing a more thorough inspection. “…and not ‘curious’,” she claimed with more force in her soft tones. “I am X’yrin…an Exultare. What is your family?”
- X'ies Lambda - 05-29-2012
Though prejudice did not exist in their collective, ones name did warrant a certain regard for how they were treated by others. At least this was the truth she had come to learn through uncomfortable, and often unfavorable means. Time and again her brother reminded her of the weight their proud family name carried even though it was not restricted to their blood alone. And in truth, she could care less for its importance. Thus far all she could see that the name made others reluctant to play, and her damned name meant more training and less sleeping. It meant that only the Evan'ules would play with her and the Marecks would decorate her... but she had yet to see how a Lambda would treat her...
She didn't even know what the role of a Lambda was. They always seems such a reserved and quiet lot. Had it not been for her Shepard taking a Lambda for his second mate, she wouldn't have known they were a part of their travelling company. But that was no reason for her to be rude... Politely the little one lowered her head in proper greeting but remained seated. "...hello. ...nice to meet you X'ies. But... you're not with your family..." Quite the obvious observation for one meant to be in tune with their surroundings, but it also served as a means to keep the uncomfortable silence at bay. No sense in letting her questions remain silent when there was the perfect opportunity before her to have her curious mind appeased. With a cant of her head, she continued down her inquiring line.

It had occurred to the female that like her male companion, she was away from her family and the responsibilities there in. In her mind, her reason for disregarding the day’s training was just; she was utterly tired and wanted a day of play that did not result in her brother’s taunts or the caretaker’s instruction. But to see another warranted question; why was he away from his family? Was his training too hard as well? But as it came to light that he was not trained physically but mentally, her curiosity only further peaked and was drawn from her seat to bear down upon the male inquisitively.
The ‘noise’ of her fellow young ones was never what drove her from their company. It was always the training, the tireless and relentless training. Conditioned to defend and protect, never to unleash the pent of energy but assume ways to divert it. She could never understand why she was made to endure this routine, why she could never aim for an ear or attempt to tackle her fellow pup to the ground in play. There was much to be unleashed but never would be and her young mind could not yet fathom the reasons for this brand of torture, or the benefit it would have in her future. How was she to convey this driving force when she herself did not fully understand it?
“I…am not happy,” each word felt like a betrayal against her family and with the carefully spoken syllables, she visibly flinched. “…don’t play anymore. Always rise in morning… say not a word… watch examples, follow examples. No attacking… only defending. No playing… only training.” When compared to the articulate tongue of her companion, her speech was terrible soft and broken. She had yet to learn the gestures of ‘understanding’ as her body had yet to undergo the change. But the use of speech had been highly discouraged when not used to instruct a lesson or to recite the creed of the family Exultare. She was not meant to find power in words, but by the strength that physically resided.
- X'ies Lambda - 05-30-2012
What she expected least of all, was any kind of understand. A sympathetic ear, perhaps. But not a like story that expressed a disdain similar to her own in the disruption of a simpler existence. Play should have been a part of their daily life again.
All work and no play made for an upset Exultare heir. But little surprises tended to make her smile, and this grey form in mid bound was no exception. The warrior’s eye was always trained on the opponent in order to read their movements and act accordingly. Her own eye was only minutely trained but it had learned to detect the subtle twitches of muscle beneath fur… adult fur that had been tightened and refined through seasons of training. The soft malleable body of a pup was another situation all together. Had perhaps play still been a part of their days, she would have learned the subtle movements and engraved them into her mind, she would have been better prepared for the attack that greeted her so suddenly.
Or perhaps in the midst of complaining, she was better off foregoing blame on her lack of play and just enjoy what was happening. Yes. She was more inclined to do just that. The little surprise brought a smile to her muzzle and sent her tail high and wagging with mirth, even as her large body was dropped to the ground. Against what her family would call an appropriate counter, the would-be warrior giggled excitably and rolled onto her back with paws swinging blind hoping to catch her newfound playmate in the face. An execution derived from instinct and refined through training. It could hardly have been said to matter inthe midst of an activity meant to be harmless and joyful. The words of her caretaker continued to barrage her mind, correcting her errors when they had yet to occur. But in her giggling, the voice was made quiet, giving her a kind of peace where only the instinctual mind spoke words of childish comfort and encouraged this time of enjoyment.
When her paw met its mark, the young one quickly rolled to all fours and pushed herself to stand. Her eyes were trained on him, looking not for the subtle gestures but the full on moves of attack and would act accordingly. His paw came toward her and with a meek growl she bound for the limb with opened maw and force behind her advancing, bouncing form. She aimed to take his paw between her teeth and use her gathered force to knock him down. Though she was keen of following her training, now some parts of it could not be helped. She was trained to bring the other to submission, regardless of the circumstance.
- X'ies Lambda - 05-30-2012
Hold on to the prize and never release til submission was assured... and what a relentless hold she had. Feeling him pull to free his paw, she expectedly clamped down harder to keep that struggling limb still. In all her bite was that of a pup's soft and easy to pull away from with force, but against the mental reminder that this was all in play, she could not fight her training creeping into her actions. She even growled at his harmless protest, but soon found herself mouth empty and bewildered.
What had she missed? What kind of thinking caused this movement? She had only a moment to register his escape before she went swatting for his rolling form and literally leapt to throw her weight ontop of him to cease further escape. Oh, this little bout was play was certainly more interesting than sitting in a small group listening to principals to be put into practice. Here she could actually put the methods to practical use... and in fun no less! But quickly the definition of the word warped to an understanding that suited the young female perhaps more than her male contender. It was fun for her to be the aggressor as she had been in her younger months. And it was fun for her to have her opponent submit.
Smiling as he bound at her, she split her jaws apart to take her opponent by the throat and still any further attack.
|
