She had finally grown used to being pregnant, and now a new madness set in. While she had found a way to ease her fears by building small traps and making sure she was always within eyesight of a pack member, Terra found her instincts running wild again with the need to find someplace comfortable. Terra wasn't sure what this comfortable place would be, just that she would know it when she saw it. Leaving the house Terra prowled through the lands, feeling uncomfortable with how large her tummy was. It didn't hit the ground, but when she was climbing up a slope she definitely felt eh grass tickling her.

Entering the woods Terra sniffed at each section, pausing occasionally near open tree roots, hollow stumps, and abandoned dens. Each one was thoroughly investigated, head deep in before she would dismiss it and move on. Pausing by a small stream Terra took a drink, sating her thirst. It would be nice if she was close to the water all the time. Normally it was no problem, but lately even heading out to get something to drink was exhausting. Shaking her head Terra continued on, trotting slightly. Spotting a small crook up ahead Terra slowed. It looked like the stream had split off from here some years ago, leaving a smooth sandy area.

The bank was comfortable, and it even had a shallow section that Terra could curl up in. Fussing about Terra dug at the hole, making it deeper than it had been before. Her head disappeared underneath, and Terra vanished into it's depth. It was a long time before she came back out, dirty but happy. Tail wagging she stretched out with a sigh, watching the birds flitting above. She'd found it.

In his lupus form, Trent had gone about to discover the territories some more. For some time he had been hauled up in the hotel, and truthfully he had even hunted for himself minimally, often taking from the caches, then feeling guilty, but always repeating his crimes. The coywolf feared for winter, he feared for another meeting with Alder (for he hadn't visited Alder nor Pony in quite some time and didn't like being berated for things; which then lead him into avoiding Alder more), and he feared for someone to find out that he was really just tagging along for the ride, not providing anything good for the pack.

Trotting through the woods, Trent followed a stream, feeling perfectly at peace being by himself. With no one around, there was no one that could tell him off for things, either. It was a lovely day, and he was actually feeling good, for a change; better than when he was still in his den all the time, anyway.

Suddenly, he heard a noise and looked in the direction of that which had disturbed his rest. At first he saw only someone's huge belly and tail going into a hole. He wasn't entirely sure why, but Trent stood by and watched for some time as the stomach, then the tail, vanished completely into the hole. He watched the hole, mesmerised, when suddenly a familiar face popped out, completely unexpected. He hadn't recognised her end half. "T-Terra!" he stumbled out in surprise, since he hadn't expected to see anyone here, least of all her, whom he hadn't seen for quite some time. Then, remembering the size of her stomach, ".. What on earth happened to you?"

Bright green eyes settled on the orange male, amusement flickering as he stumbled back in surprise. Trent was always fun to be around. Not because he himself was particularly amusing. The way that he tended to react to things always made her laugh though. Tail wagging she smiled lazily as he almost tripped over himself in surprise. Trent. Haven't seen you in a while. Catching rabbits to fill the storage again? Terra hadn't been hunting herself for some time, mainly as only things that were practically dead had proved capable of being caught by the coyote.

The question puzzled Terra at first. She wasn't aware that anything had happened to her. Glancing back at the den Terra did her best to shrug while on four legs. I'm not really sure. I just felt that I needed a place to rest. It's not where I live, but it's really comfortable. The soft warm sand, the cool dry nook, the running water that was nearby. All of it called to her instincts, telling her that this was the place. So many had been rejected. Finally finding a place where she could stop and lay out was very nice. It just happened. I had to find it. A very weird feeling, but one she had fulfilled. Terra was happy with the result at least.

"Err, something like that," Trent mumbled in response to Terra's question. Well, not really anything like that, but it was no use trying to lie successfully anyway; Terra had a way of reading his every poker face. It had been some time since they'd met, but since he had had so little social contact with others, bar that Niro fellow that had been hurt he'd met a while back, it still felt like only a week ago that he'd last seen Terra. Time went by so quickly, and he had so little control over it...

Just as she was puzzled by his question, he was puzzled by her answer, which didn't seem to mesh well with what he'd asked her. "Uh.." he said, confused a moment. Then he suddenly realised what she was talking about. "Oh! I meant the ah, family expansion thing..." Trent stared at her, hoping to catch a glimpse of recognition now, and hoping for an answer. Trent hadn't often seen pregnant wolves just wandering about, but in these lands, it didn't surprise him the rules were different. However, in spite of that he did know what a pregnant wolf looked like; and Terra definitely was one.

Grinning Terra watched him, knowing that he hadn't been at all. Her question had been teasing in the first place, mentioning the last lie he had brought up to her. Tail swaying she watched him, eyes glistening as the shy wolf shifted about. Terra wasn't purposely making him uncomfortable, simply enjoying his reactions. If it meant pushing on his buttons a little, she had no problems doing so. Finding the den had made her feel rather lazy however, and she didn't push on him.

Despite the fact that her response had been perfectly reasonable Tera seemed to have managed to confuse Trent. She wasn't even trying! It was almost too easy, but for one thing. She was still entertained. As long as that fact remained Terra would do whatever she wanted. It was only if he started boring her that she would change things up. The meaningful stare after the last sentence did clue her in on what he was talking about. Terra's eyes widened, and she giggled. Looks like I got myself in trouble. Fell in love with a thief, and he left me with pups.

Trent was surprised as Terra seemed to light-heartedly tell him about her pregnancy. As if it was just an oopsie, something that she'd done wrong, like stealing food from the caches (oh, wait, they'd actually done that), or getting hurt from tripping (oh, she'd done that too, except not so much tripping as getting a leg gnawed off by someone or something, or he imagined, for tripping didn't generally make you that beat up). She was going to bring life into the world, with all the dangers that accompanied that, and Trent couldn't help but frown at her complete lack of responsibility in the matter. And he was pretty sure that she was still somewhere up in the higher bits of the ranks, like Alder, too, despite getting pregnant at the end of summer and giving the pack more hazzard. Apparently, survival wasn't very high on the to-do list of the pack, or perhaps they'd just gotten lazy from having surprisingly much food just laying around.

Well, whatever the case was, Trent was certainly disappointed in her. He thought back to the first time they'd met, and wondered what their lives would've been like if he'd actually decided to pull through with trying to court her, officially, like he'd intended. Well, at least hers would've been a whole lot less messed up right now, then. They'd probably have kids, too (the thought made him shudder a bit inwardly), and be able to offer those kids good lives.

Lost in these thoughts, he thoughtlessly countered with another joke, almost mimicking the light-hearted stance on the situation that he so disapproved of, "Ah, if only you'd chosen a more reliable and suitable mate some months ago, huh?" He wasn't even sure if she'd catch the hidden meaning, since she couldn't look into his thoughts and maybe had forgotten altogether about their little almost-adventure when she'd first come into the pack, and was glad for it right after he'd said it, kinda hoping that she'd catch it as a general comment rather than the self-revolving joke that he'd thought of it as.

Ooc so pregnancy's made her a little unstable...

The frown didn't slip past her notice. The fact that Terra had pups without a mate did worry her. In fact, it downright freaked her out. It was just something that she kept in the back of her mind, soothed by the sudden feeling that everything was okay. Where the feeling had come from she didn't know, just that it had a pretty strong connection to the den she had just finished making. Now though, his negative mood was ripping through those layers of protection, right to the core of the matter. One that she'd been assured wouldn't affect her or her pups.

Instead of laughing at the joke, something she would have normally done, the trickster flipped over to the other side of the coin. Green eyes turned menacing, the smile she bore showing too many teeth for one to consider it as friendly. A better mate? I suppose you believe you'd be fit for the job? Ready to stay by me and care for the pups? Her voice was light, but the fierce stance she'd taken showed that there would be no mouthing taken from her. She was a high ranking member, even if she only used that fact to get away with pulling pranks on the others and not submitting, and wasn't about to take lip from him.

The sudden change in mood was a little off-putting, and Trent wasn't entirely sure how to handle the situation without further angering her. Terra's fine signs of dominance weren't missed by Trent, and he wasn't about to pursue what he'd said before or make another joke, but what could he do? He looked a little lost, clearly unsure how to diffuse the situation. He didn't really think it was his fault, either, since she was the one who'd started joking, but he knew from experience that it didn't really matter who started what anyway. It would be the dominant one that'd win regardless, and he knew that sure as hell wasn't him.

"I, err..." he mumbled, "Was just worried, is all. It wasn't meant as an insult, or anything." He looked away, at the ground, mostly because he just wasn't ready to see if Terra would completely explode or if his words would manage to cool her off a little. Trent still didn't think he'd really done anything wrong, but there was no such thing as fairness in hierarchy, anyway, as far as he was concerned. It wasn't like he'd called her fat or insulted her puppies, nor had he really intended to offend her poor choices. He just hadn't realised that he had subconsciously done so, because in his mind, the joke had revolved more around him than her and so he hadn't even considered the fact that it might be taken as an insult. Up until now, anyway.

He was worried? He wasn't the one pregnant with pups to care for, and no mate to help along. He wasn't the one being plagued by the fear that the pups would be harmed, and the pack would be attacked by the same one who had injured Niro. She had definitely taken offense to the sore point in this whole pregnancy. She wanted a mate. She wanted Kit to be there with her, to help her raise the pups. Instead, she was alone. All the care of her pack couldn't change that fact.

What could change her mood though, was the restful feeling that had settled around her. Less restless, more prepared for what was happening. Trent submitted, Terra settling down once more. I had expected him to be here. Confiding in Trent, someone that she viewed as silly, wasn't something Terra had thought she would do. No one else had questioned her about her mate though, at least not in such a way that she was forced to face what had happened. He left, though. He promised to stay, but I can't go to the borders, and I haven't heard his call. Why did he go?

[html]

Terra didn't seem very convinced that all Trent had been was concerned, or maybe she just didn't give a hoot whether he was or not. Gods, was he hopeless, or what? Well, maybe he wasn't super-concerned, or rather, he couldn't really fathom the gravity of the situation entirely because he had never been, nor seen anyone, in a similar position on either side. But he did worry for Terra, because she always seemed to be getting in trouble some way or the other... And even though he probably would've been a suck-ass mate, and she should be happy she wasn't with him (for more than one reason), Trent did care about her in, well, some way, and so he did worry that she'd gotten hurt before, and now pregnant and all alone.

Trent's right ear twitched as Terra spoke again, luckily not with another snarky comment directed at him. Instead she sounded almost a little lonely, Terra of all people, and definitely like she missed that guy. He must've been something special, but apparently Terra's taste in men wasn't that wonderful if he'd just up and left. Well, the fact that she'd hit on Trent at one point in time said a lot about her taste in men, anyway. Trent was at a loss for words, because he didn't know what to say or do. All he could think of was 'there, there' and a pat to the back, but he doubted that was what Terra wanted right now and, with his luck, she'd probably just take it as another insult.

"Sorry that he was an ass." Err, maybe that was a little unsophisticated. But better than 'there, there', wasn't it? "You deserve better than that." But what she deserved seemed kind of irrelevant, since she hadn't gotten what Trent thought she deserved - a solid, good relationship with a nice bloke - but instead she'd gotten an assy thief that ran away. It was irrelevant, perhaps, and corny to boot, but hell, Trent had no idea what one said to a pregnant female in distress about her departed mate.

She could sense his hesitation and concern now. Trent was always a rather shy fellow, not one Terra would think of ever gaining a high rank in the pack. Figuring out what was just his typical nerves and what was him actually being genuinely concerned for her was difficult. His response to her words was clear enough this time. Terra's tail sank down, knowing that her situation was pretty bad. She had no idea what she was doing. There was danger outside the pack, no mate, the threat of starvation, and all manner of bad things out there to hurt her and her pups. How was she supposed to keep them safe?

A sharp spiral of worry began to run through her, the same as before. All the fears that had been put to rest when she'd made the den came shooting back up, sharp and bitter. Nodding her head Terra nuzzled against Trent, unable to meet his gaze. I'm sorry too. She never could resist the thrill of danger, and now her pups would pay the price for her folly. Sighing she sat down, looking over to the den she'd finished making. It's a good spot. Far enough from the rest of the pack to grant her privacy, while still close enough that it would only take a couple minutes for someone to come if she started panicking.

The fact that Terra finally seemed to get that Trent really was concerned for her wasn't very consoling, considering the fact that she was still upset. He felt awkward as she nuzzled against him, feeling equally, if not more, sorry for herself as he felt for her. Or maybe he was just projecting his own self-pity onto her. Well, whatever it was, he did genuinely care for her; after all, Terra was pretty much his only friend (and maybe Alder a bit, too). She was pretty social and seemed to know more wolves in the pack, but she was about half of what he had. Anyway, he was looking to make up for neglecting her and Alder, and the whole pack for that matter, lately.

If only he was better with words, though. Trent wished he knew what to say, but couldn't think of anything. He smiled vaguely as she said that it was a good spot. "Yes. It is." And he knew where it was, so if anything did happen, then he'd know where to find her... And hopefully, he would be able to do anything against whatever was getting at her. Or better yet, hopefully it would never be necessary at all.

"Well, uh, at least they'll have a whole pack to look after them. That's better than nothing, right?" Trent kept his vague smile on, hoping that his words would be able to cheer her up a little. Maybe because he genuinely cared, or maybe because he just wanted to feel a little less worthless about himself and his non-existant contribution to Cour des Miracles.

A vague smile flitted over Trent's face as he spoke, agreeing with her decision. It had taken a long time to pick it out the spot, and it wasn't even really settled into. Terra had come right out of the den once she was done digging it out, and started talking to Trent. The whole experience was new for her. Life didn't seem to want to go very smoothly, handing her the challenges it was for her first pregnancy. The place she had chosen was ideal at least. Close to a stream so she could get water anytime she wished, trees overhead for shade, a nice sandy stretch she could dig into and just roll out in.

Nodding her head she flashed a smile at Trent. Now that her mistake with choosing a mate was out in the open Terra was actually feeling a lot better about that, instead of keeping it inside. The paranoia still rested in the back of her mind, but for now it was settled. Of course! You'll help too, right? Bring back your mighty catches? Laughing she winked over at him. Whether or not he brought food Terra enjoyed his company. If he brought something she could eat that would simply be a bonus. Besides, Terra enjoyed mocking him. He was an easy source of amusement, and relaxing to be around.

Luckily Terra wasn't actually expecting him to bring home lovely catches. That would've been quite the disappointment, once she'd find out that he wasn't going to. Luckily, he knew that there was little danger, after that run-in at the food caches, that Terra actually thought Trent was going to hunt for her. It was embarrassing at the time, but now he was relieved they had been co-op thieves at the time (even if she had a better reason than he for being a thief).

"Of course," he said with a faux-noble voice, obviously playing along in Terra's joke, and somewhat mocking himself in the process. "So, do you have any names in mind yet?" Maybe the puppies made her sad right now - or rather, thinking of who sired them - but Trent knew that Terra had to love them, and it sounded like she wanted to make it work, for them. And from what he remembered back in his old pack, females adored talking about their little puppies-to-be. So maybe Terra had some ideas about her offspring, so far. Jokingly and with a grin he added, "You are going to name one after me, aren't you?"

The nobility in Trent's voice amused Terra, both of them going along with the joke. Sitting down Terra stretched out, feeling her belly scrape along the sand. She was very large. Not as large as someone carrying a litter of many pups, but it definitely showed on her small frame. Panting a little from the movement she looked back up to Trent, tail thumping behind her. Being pregnant was not very comfortable, but at least this small section of it was a good place for her to relax in.

Names? That hadn't occurred to her. It hadn't occurred to her at all. Where she had grown up the pups were given names based on what they revealed about themselves at birth. Some were named for their coats, or the way they moved, or the sounds they made. Terra herself had been named for the way she had reacted when born, accepting it as simply fact. That acceptance had earned her the grounded earthy name that she bore. Perhaps. Tilting her head Terra wondered if any would look like him. He was rather close in appearance to herself, so it was possible. I'm hoping they'll be great tricksters.

Trent really doubted that any of Terra's pups would be named after him... After all, he was just someone she knew, right, a packmate and sort-of friend, not like her great idol whom she looked up to greatly, or anything along those lines. Nah, she probably wasn't going to name any after him. But, vain as he was, Trent actually liked the idea that she might. Just maybe. Perhaps.

Tricksters... "You're actually hoping they'll be as good at getting in trouble as their mom?" As an afterthought, Trent said, with a grin, "Or you're hoping they'll be good at getting others in trouble, then, if they'll be tricksters?" Saying these words, Trent really hoped that Terra wasn't secretly last-named Trickster, or something, and he was rambling about stuff that wasn't even there. He didn't know if she had a last name, really.

Thinking back about the naming-a-pup-after-him thing, Trent saw the resemblance between his and Terra's appearance and pelt, and figured that it wouldn't have been a long shot if he'd be a surrogate father. But gods, why'd he even want that? Right, he was supposed to have a normal life and be a man about things, but then, Trent was pretty sure that that didn't involve raising some other guy's pups, anyway... He wasn't even sure why the thought occurred to him at all. Probably a lingering memory from that time they'd picked out his room together, when Trent had done his hardest to hit on Terra.

Ooc.

Her? Get in trouble? Mock dismay covered her features. How could you believe that? I swear, the bear was out to get me. I had no idea it was there. Laughing she shook her head. The bear incident was just one of many. She really hoped Skoll hadn't blabbed to anyone about that. If they had, well, she could always pretend she hadn't known that the bear was there. After all, she was older than Skoll, and higher ranked. Surely they would believe her over a pup. Well, maybe they would.

Nodding her head Terra craned her head, looking at her inflated belly. What would they look like? If she did name one Trent, would the pup behave like him too? Names were rather important after all. They found the defining feature of one's personality, the one that was visible even at birth, and gave it to them. That way they couldn't get lost, always having something to look back on to remember themselves. It was not as complex a system as it sounded, given no special ceremony. It was just done to help improve survival, the same as their loose fitting pack nature, drifting apart and together. If they can trick others, it will be a great feat. It will help them survive against all odds.

i really like the naming philosophy used for Terra and her pups Smile

[html]

Trent hadn't heard anything about a bear incident, and he wondered if Terra had actually gotten into a fight with a bear or if she was making something up for laughs. Well, it didn't really matter anyway, he supposed... And he wasn't going to get the answer, either, because Terra tended to be kind of secretive about the things that had gotten her into trouble. Things like "a fight", or "a thief", and so on. Well, he wasn't one to pry, anyway, and so he did not.

As Terra said that tricking others would be a great fear, Trent grinned again. "So you'll name them Trickster, Trickster 2, and Tricksterette, then, just so they'll never forget to trick others?" Trent grinned at Terra, continuing on the joking path (because it seemed a lot more effortless and painless than talking about serious things, forcing him to face the apathy he was living in). Anyway, he supposed that Terra was right, though. Tricking others was a great feat. Trent was, in a way, tricking others - at least he very much felt like he was - because he had been accepted into this pack saying he'd be a great member, contribute, and other such things, and he felt like he wasn't doing nearly enough to make his words true. And Alder... Err, well, he'd worry about that another time, he told himself, while focussing back on Terra and away from his world of thoughts about trickery.

thanks!

Laughing Terra shook her head. She'd never name her pups such jinxed names! The thought was entertaining. Only if you insist. Teasing she shook her head, a dry feeling running through her. Terra laid there for a moment, trying to place what she had just felt. Another rumble ran through, and she realized she was dying of thirst. She stayed as she was, wondering if it was worth the effort to try and get up and move to do something about it. Alas, the feeling was refusing to fade. Grunting her paws dug into the soft embankment, pushing her swollen frame to stand.

It was sad that such a feat gave her a sense of accomplishment nowadays. What happened to her smooth fleet form, able to escape and maneuver where no one else could? Lowering her head she moved to the stream, and took a deep drink. Having it close had been a great idea. Had she actually made that choice? Terra wasn't sure. She'd just known once she'd found the place that it was perfect for what she needed, and had went to work setting herself up.

If Trent would've had any say in this, these poor pups would have grown up with some awful names. Trent Junior, Trent the Awesome, Trickster and Tricksterette, these were only some of the names he could come up with. Of course, he didn't actually expect any to be named Trent, particularly because it would be rather confusing. Everyone would think that Trent was the father (well, everyone who didn't actually know Terra, anyway), and they'd have to explain new people all the time that this was all the result of a joke, more or less. Especially considering the fact they looked similar due to their coyote backgrounds and so it wasn't out of the question for one to look like Trent. Nah, but it was nice to think about it, anyway, even if doubtlessly Terra wouldn't choose any of his rubbish naming possibilities.

While he was thinking about this, Terra got up and wobbled over to the stream she'd dug her little den next to, showing her pregnant figure clearly. "Do you want me to go so you can get settled in a bit better..? I'll come see the pups, of course. Well, if you are okay with that, anyway." He felt like a passerby watching idly at someone who had better things to do as she drank, and so he offered to take a leave. And, of course, come see her pups, once she was alright with them being seen and all (new mothers with tiny pups could be quite snappish to be around, after all, so he wasn't sure if she wanted him to see them at all).
