Oberon's Spring

Fishing. So, she hadn't really cared about it. But after the encounter with Slay and her talk of this human fishing technique, attempting to spur his interest in the human knowledge, she had managed to spur her own instead. So, she had returned to the library yet another time, found the books that she had been looking for, and gone out to find suitable material. A hare had become the string that she needed, and now she was straightening quite a big and long stick to make this "fishing pole". There was some sort of mechanism attached to it, but none of the books described how to make them (or the other parts for that matter, but she did have eyes after all). They described it's function, however, and though it looked very complex from what she saw, she was certain she could make a simpler and still working little wheel-thing. Sighing at the stick which was not straight yet, the femme wished she had a knife. A knife would make her life so much easier. As her movements became automatic, Mew's thoughts drifted away. Auntie Hannah had had knives, hadn't she? Several ones, in fact. They'd used it for taking down that elk once. Or had it been a deer? She didn't remember. It had been a large animal anyways, and the knives had been rather effective. Word had it that Hannah was back in the area, perhaps if she found her she could tell her more about how to get a knife? A bitter thought crossed Mew's mind and was mirrored with a scowl on her face, what if she had had a knife when she had so foolishly ventured into Inferni? Asphyxia would have had nothing on her. Her movements with the sharp rock and stick had halted as she delved into memories she'd rather be without. It lasted for a long time in her head, but only seconds in real time, and soon she was at it again, the scowl gone, scraping on the piece of wood over and over to make it increasingly thinner. It was still early, and though the progress was slow she would probably have a crude fishing pole mildly resembling the picture in the book by the time evening settled its darkness over the area. And if it didn't work it wasn't as if she didn't have enough time on her hands to try again. Sighing again, her eyes watched the pole in progress and became glossy, thoughts again conquering her attention.

The female was shifted, and worse yet was constructing something out of word and string, the purpose of which Adelaida couldn’t guess. The ivory female was rather absorbed in her work and didn’t seem to notice Adelaida and Pickles, or if she hadn’t didn’t care. Adelaida would have kept going but for the nagging voice of Sankor, pleading with her to get along with the pack members, at least until Alexey came home. Really, Adelaida didn’t have to stay in Dahlia de Mai, she hadn’t had to of joined at all, but she had done it for Sankor and Alexey and now that she was here, it was time to make the best of it. Adelaida had already met some members of the pack but she knew that wasn’t good enough. Even if she kept mostly to herself she would eventually have to get to know them all, and better now than later.

Breathing in deeply, for despite the fact that these Luperci were her pack mates now and she knew that no one here would harm her, the sight of the two legged beast created panic in her. Despite the fact that the virus ran in her veins now too, it was hard to think of the creatures as canines, rather than monsters. Adelaida would try, and she would do so with a cheerful face, at least for as long as she could muster. Her voice was shaky but sweet when she finally got within speaking range, the chinchilla companion of her sister following close behind, not really wanting to know what the lady was doing but not knowing how else to break the ice. “Hello... what is that you’re making?” Adelaida let the breath she had been holding out. “I’m Adelaida Koios. New here.”

Her attention had been so focused on nothing at all as she sat there absently scratching the pole, that she had not heard nor smelled the femme approaching. And she should have, as she'd been in sight and everything, at least for a few seconds before she spoke. Startled, Mew's green eyes immediately snapped to the brown-colored femme and she uttered a sound of surprise and dropped the stick and stone she was holding. only moments later did she utter another sound, this time of embarrassment and quickly looked down as she picked up the stone and rock, ignoring the blush that was rising in her cheeks. Bollocks! It was typical, right? Here was another person,a new joiner, and Mew shouldn't be making a fool out of herself, no, she should act in a way that made this new person understand that Mew was.. she didn't know. She was put off by the lack of respect that Firefly had shown her, even despite the fact that she was a rank higher than Mew. The bitch didn't deserve it anyways! And thus she became slightly obsessed with showing everyone new that she would not be messed with. In terms of respect. She wouldn't hurt any of them, of course. Looking up again, Mew mumbled a "hi" and then got herself together. That had been nearly inaudible! "Eh, hi". Yeah.. now she didn't look like a retard at all. "Yeah, I'm eh.. making a fishing pole...Oh and I'm Mew. Sadira. Eh, Mew Sadira, that is..." Looking at the femme in front of her, Mew did not want to be here right now. It would, frankly, be much more fun to hang around Firefly, or just slowly sink into a pit of snakes or something. The day had been good, damnit! Wasn't she allowed those?

Adelaida smiled to herself as the female drop the stick and stone in surprise, fumbling to pick them back up again. So often Adelaida was the awkward one, caught at the wrong moment doing the wrong thing, always saying what another person didn’t want to hear. It felt good to know it happened to others as well and having caught someone else at an awkward moment gave her a boost of confidence. Straightening herself a bit to appear taller, Adelaida casually sat down, her eyes still watching Mew’s every move. "Nice to meet you Mew." Her voice came out calm, even at a normal pitch, and Adelaida was surprised to hear herself speak so clearly.

It was easy to keep this façade of confidence, even with Mew shifted. The Luperci still made her uncomfortable; the female was bigger than her, stronger and faster. Yet when Adelaida grew weary of staring at the unnatural body she glanced to the fishing pole, unconsciously wrinkling her nose in disgust. Why would anyone fish with one of those when they had perfectly good fangs? Adeladia couldn’t understand it. "Why are you making one? I’m sure somewhere in Wolfville you could find one." Ade was pleased she knew enough about the lands to know this. She had, after all, been born in the lands, she knew that Wolfville was filled with shops full of odds and ends, and houses were crammed with remnants of human life. Surely a fishing pole existed somewhere? Adelaida eyed Mew critically, sweeping over the fishing pole again, thinking to herself what a waste of time human contraptions were.

Gathering herself, Mew tried to breathe steadily, without making it obvious that it was exactly that she was doing. Her green eyes studied the brown femme as she sat down in front of her, and Mew laid the fishing pole and stone down on the ground next to her, changing her seating so she sat on the lower parts of her legs, knees pointing in Adelaida's direction. Letting the first sentence she uttered pass (after all it was polite formalities, and didn't need ocmmenting), Mew nodded, instead, to the second and third phrases she let out of her mouth. True, she could have found one in Wolfville. She hadn't thought of this before now, but she still preferred at least attempting to create first, retrieve later. She'd always been like that. The femme in front of her seemed disdainful of what she was doing, even disdainful at all of Mew, the way she was wrinkling her nose at what she was crafting. Why, Mew did not know, as she had done nothing to deserve it. Yeah, Wolfville has all sorts of trash lying around. But I have a fascination of how things work together, and a conversation with Slay the other day made me think about this. I had to start looking into it to get it out of my head. Gesturing with her hands as she spoke, the openness of her own behavior surprised her. Why was she acting all nice and open? She was normally so closed - especially to other females. Males were o.k., but she hardly ever got along with another female. Except perhaps Cwmfen, although she was an oddity. A cute oddity, but still.

Mew's face was neutral, and her tail brushed the ground behind her, still thinking about the strangeness of her own behavior. Perhaps she was still nervous after getting so startled... Or perhaps she was trying to defend herself against the shadow of disdain on the other's face, by attempting a normal attitude? She could be kind, Mew Sadira, but it happened rarely, and only towards a special few. Thus she had a reason for doing this, although she did not know what. Letting the thought go, she heard her voice utter yet another unplanned sentence. I always do things like this. It's like exploration when you're bored with landscapes. The smile lingered, and it was truthful and open. Stranger things had happened, but hell...

Adelaida titled her head at the female, blue eyes critically eying the contraption the female had been busy creating. Mew acknowledge that she could just as easily find a fishing pole but that she preferred to make one. This Adelaida did not understand, even with Mew’s patient explanation. Why put the time and effort into something that already was in existence? Just for something to do? Adelaida could think of a million activities she would rather do than build a fishing pole. Of course, Adeladia knew she would never touch a fishing pole, wouldn’t even allow herself to shift to have that ability. Opposable thumbs were not meant for canines, Adelaida was certain of that fact.

Adelaida drew closer, her eyes scanning the pole that had been shaped in Mew’s hand and even going so far as to poke the wooden pole with her cold, wet nose. Surprised at her daring she drew back and looked at Mew, embarrassed to have touched another wolf’s belongings and revolted that she had taken such an interest in a human item, even if that interest had been intertwined with disdain. Smiling sheepishly she tried to bring the attention away from the fishing pole and her foolish investigation of it. "Do you not like to fish the traditional way?" Wolves were not fishers by nature, but standing knee deep in the water and snapping at the distorted fish beneath the water’s surface was preferable to casting a fishing pole, Adelaida wouldn’t budge on that point.

It seemed as if the negative face on the darker femme diminished somewhat, although Mew could not really pinpoint it either. The way she tilted her head and carried herself let on that this was, perhaps, strangeness to her. A lot of wolves did not know much about human activities, and a lot of wolves looked down upon it. This was something she'd never understood. After all, the humans had gone to great lengths to make their lives comfortable, and yes, they had died. Whether their death, or near extinction, was a punishment for their actions or not, Mew did not know, but with all the information they had gathered and found uses for, she felt it would be a waste not to use it herself. After all, it was right there, available for anyone who could be arsed to learn the language. And much of it was extremely useful.

As the sound of Mew's sentence disappeared, the richly colored femme drew closer to Mew, studying the pole intently. she had taken on an odd pose, almost as if she was scared of the simple contraption she held in her hands. Not wanting to be rude, Mew let the femme go on as she drew closer and closer and eventually nudged the pole with her nose. Mew did, in fact, mind when strangers came too close, but the femme had been so focused on the pole that it made Mew curious to see what would happen. As her nose touched it barely, she sprung back as if it were a viper, ready to attack her with poisonous fangs. Or, perhaps not as fast, but it seemed as if the brief meeting of nose and pole had had an impact on the femme, at least. Now it was her time to feel the uncomfortable feeling of embarrassment, and Mew tilted her head sideways, puzzled by her odd behavior. The moment passed quickly when Adelaida presented her with a question, causing Mew to chuckle.

Heheh.. I hate fishing. I've never done any of it. This is just me feeding my curiosity, really.

The two toned female, warm milk chocolate color covered with dark rich mocha fur, swallowed hard. This female was making it harder yet for Adelaida to form a pleasant, sane sounding response. She knew she had to stop shying away from the Luperci, away from their ways, but it was all so… revolting. The female here was simply constructing a tool she never intended to use? Wasn’t their enough human garbage hanging around already? Did the Luperci really have to create their own brand of useless things? Adelaida sighed, turning her eyes from the contraption and focusing them on Mew.

The female’s eyes were emerald and Adelaida tried to focus in on them, rather than any other part of her body. At least the eyes, whether in the head of a luperci or a lupus, always looked the same. They did not undergo the horrifying tissue and skeletal changes that the rest of the body did. "Well then..." Ade struggled to find words, words which were not insulting and would keep the conversation at a normal level. "What do you like to do?" Hopefully it was not something more unnatural than fishing with a rod.

Despite her own efforts at trying to please the femme, Adelaida seemed to maintain her somewhat disdainful facial expression. What went through her mind, of course, Mew could not know, but judging by the sigh she uttered towards her actions she couldn't interpret it as positive, anyway. It might not be directly negative either, Mew quickly decided, and thus let it pass as if it was nothing. She wouldn't waste her time dwelling on something that might not be relevant, and also she (apparently) didn't want Adelaida to get the wrong impression of her. That the darker femme already had, she didn't know, but she assumed her view to be neutral. It seemed to be, anyways, since she had not left yet, and even continued her conversation, although on a different subject.

I like to sing, do music. Mew was fairly certain Adelaida would not share her enthusiasm for the subject, no one in this pack did - seemingly - except Cwmfen, so she did not give the music subject any more weight in the conversation than her exploration of human artifacts. In one way they were the same, even. Not having much other things to do than these two, and staring at her children's grave (an activity she did not want to advertise, fearing to be marked as an odd, depressive loner - as she was), Mew turned the conversation onto Adelaida instead. So, how are you settling in here?

Music, Adelaida smiled softly. She did not hate music, did not have a distaste for it as she had for the human contraptions and other hobbies. Her mother and father had often sang among themselves, and sometimes even to the Koios children, and Ade wouldn’t have minded hearing Mew sing. Yet she said nothing, could not request that from her. And she did not question further, imagining that perhaps Mew’s love for music transcended vocals and went into the realm of instruments. Ade wasn’t sure how to feel about those. Many of them only mirror sounds found in nature, the chirping of birds, the rolling of thunder, but all the same, the way they were made was unnatural. She knew the names of some instruments, found them interesting even, but did not like the idea of a wolf handling them, manipulating them, making music from them.

And so, like Mew she like the subject pass without further comment, only offering her a smile of approval, or at close to approval as Adelaida could get. The question Mew posed then was an interesting one, and Adelaida sighed heavily. "I’m not... settling in that is." Ril’o had been pleasant, but she had of her own accord cut that meeting short and made it awkward, if the male thought her strange and undesirable, she did not blame him. Cwmfen made her angry and jealous, but there was no reasoning for that and Adelaida couldn’t comment on the wolf fairly. Sankor was just merely absent, and she knew she shouldn’t base her happiness on her poor brother. There was only one individual she could fairly blame. "Firefly’s a raving bitch... delusional to boot."

The chocolate female seemed to approve more of Mew's liking to singing than her activities with human artifacts, and it pleased the ilex greatly. Perhaps the disdainful look on Ade's face at first had triggered this need for justification, although the mystery of why she was so keen to please this female would have to be solved later. Mew smiled back, sincerely, and concluded, as Adelaida did not follow up on the music subject (just like Mew had intended to, really, although if they shared enthusiasm she would not have been surprised had Adelaida ignored her question and spoken on that subject instead), that perhaps it was smart of her to leave out instruments from her comment. When the female did reply to the question Mew had presented her with, though, she wrinkled her brow in a questioning manner. A "why so?" was balancing on the tip of her tongue, wanting to get out, but the femme got her first and spoke again. This time, Mew's face changed wholly, and she laughed out loud, tilting her head backwards and closing her eyes as the sounds escaped her mouth. She liked this one already, that much was certain. I couldn't have put it better myself. letting the humour escape her eyes, she let herself become more serious now, again. Seriously, the girl casts shame over this entire pack, and my family name as well. I don't know what my brother sees in that witch. Green eyes looked keenly into the orbs of the chocolate femme, and Mew wondered whether she had a possible friend before her, simply on the basis of them both disliking Firefly. It could very well happen, and if it did Mew would welcome it. She needed more relations, and she relished any opportunity to let harsh words whip the figure of her cousin.

She knew it was unkind, the words she had shared and the words spoken back, but Adelaida did not care. Alexey and Sankor would probably disapprove, the former apparently a friend of Firefly and the latter too kind for his own good at times, but Adelaida did not let her siblings’ imaginary voices surface this time. Instead she smiled and laughed, forgetting Mew’s unnatural body and the strange contraption. Adelaida could look past that, if it meant finding an ally against the uptight and cruel female. "I’m glad to hear it’s not just me she picks on..." Adelaida hadn’t though it was, but she also hadn’t though that any of the established members of the pack would be on her side. Firefly had seemed so sure of herself, and now Adelaida knew that she had a false confidence. Anyone with more than one enemy in the pack should act so high and mighty.

"Your brother is the father of her... children?" Or unfortunate spawn, but Adeladia did not voice the unkind thought. Mew might not care for the female, but the unborn nieces and nephews were another story all together. And Adelaida had threatened the lives of them, but that too she did not share. She had not meant it, not truly, and the thought of those words now sickened her. Yet Firefly had pushed her, and kept pushing her, and Adelaida did and said a lot of regrettable things when pushed too far. "Who is your brother?"

The other femme reacted with a laugh, and it pleased the white ear of Mew Sadira. It was against her principles to talk badly of someone behind their back, and especially to relish the activity as she did right now, but Firefly had given her an excuse to stray from her values in just a single case; her disapproval of her sister-in-law (ugh! the words would never taste well) was so great that she allowed herself to put those values aside, and simply enjoy spitting at her shadow. Smiling knowingly she replied to the femme's words immediately after they were spoken. Oh she picks on most females, I think it is her way of attempting to establish a some sort of social power over us. Her power was too weak to rule Mew, however, as she had proven their last encounter. Sadly, they were now working together for the pack, as Cercelee had revealed only yesterday, and it should be a bumpy ride indeed...

Presented with a question, Mew frowned, though not at Adelaida, obviously. She merely frowned at the idea, although it was true. Aye, he is... unfortunately for him - and them, I guess. He was not good with children, hell - he hadn't been good with children even as a child himself! Luckily for the little ones there were plenty of maternal figures around, however, so hopefully it would never be a problem. Mew did not in the least doubt that Haku had never intended for this to happen, after their talk on Deuce and her litter. Adelaida asked further, and Mew was happy to give an answer. My brother is Haku, the Lilium. Smiling politely, Mew wondered why Adelaida did not already know this, since she obviously had run into Firefly. Perhaps the vicious femme had been too occupied with attempting to rule the new woman to remember to mention that. Because that was certainly a valid point to mention if you tried to get the upper hand.

Adelaida nodded, realizing that Mew was probably right. She thought over her encounter with Firefly, and it did seem that the female had gone far past trying to establish rank. "Don’t you think she has enough power with her rank?" Perhaps the women was insecure. Adelaida was insecure, and every once in a while it transgressed into her bullying others but she knew it was wrong, she knew she shouldn’t, she even felt bad… but it felt good too. To feel better than someone else, it was nice to have that once in a while no matter how false the circumstances. However it was never a constant with her, and she was growing out of it. Before coyotes, at least vulnerable ones, had been fair game, now she was trying to give them a chance. Trying.

"Oh…" So her brother held rank too, and Firefly was high up there. What a close knit family, all so high up on the rungs. Yet she didn’t know where Mew stood, and she didn’t ask. Adelaida of course knew the female was ranked higher than her, but Mew hadn’t made a show of it, not as Firefly had. She respected the luperci woman for that, even if she was a luperci. "Are you excited for nieces and nephews?" Adelaida smiled, she imagined Alexey ballooned with children, it was a nice thought strangely enough.

Mew chuckled again at Adelaida's response. Firefly did have enough power with her rank, in fact had Mew been the one to say the woman would never have gotten as far up as she was. The problem was, probably, that Firefly would never get enough power in her own opinion. It seemed she was a little too fond of bringing others down, and people with such characteristics should never be allowed to rule over others. Because in reality, firefly did rule, or at least attempted to so, in the most strict sense of the word - as if she was some queen. It wasn't right in any way. Yeah I agree. I hope she never gets further up though, I don't know what'd happen should she end up in a position where she would truly have power... Her words traced off as her face mirrored the worry Mew felt at that thought. The light-headed copper femme didn't just cast a darkness over their proud Sadira bloodline, she'd ruin this pack and the ones in it should she ever be the one at the reins. A gentle thought went to Cercelee, and Mew reminded herself that that was not how the things were, and they were blessed with a rosea whose opinions of justice seemed to mirror her own. It was a comforting thought.

Adelaida seemed to give the fact that her brother was the Lilium was her brother some thought, although Mew could not read her, could not guess what was going on in her head. She could be wondering why he was in such a high position as well, or why everyone in their family was of high rank, as if they held some sort of monopoly. That thought had struck Mew herself a few times - it seemed their name and blood could be found in many high positions around here. When the chocolate female spoke, however, she smiled and brought up a wholly different subject. Mew felt herself smile in response to the gesture by Adelaida, but also because her answer to the question would be a definite "yes". They will be my first! A quick thought went to the daughter Haku had mentioned, but he hadn't revealed whether she was even alive, and thus Mew considered her no family at all. She had been outcast by Haku, no? Something like that anyways. Green orbs glittered as Mew spoke again of the furballs-to-be. I really can't wait.. I've no children of my own so far, and no mate, so I'm in need of someone to spoil. One eye winked playfully at the female, expecting her to understand this need in a woman, to have some dependent creature to bestow one's love upon.

Firefly in a high rank was a scary thought indeed. From what little Adelaida had seen of the women, she knew enough to know she was not built for leadership. Leaders were fair and level headed, perhaps stern at times, maybe even cold, but not so quick to fly off the handle. Firefly was not grounded enough, could not see any side but her own. No, if Firefly ever made it to leadership, Adelaida would be among the first to abandoned ship. The mocha female had no wish to live under a tyrant. Mew probably thought much the same, and though Adelaida wonder that with Haku as her mate, would Firefly rise in the ranks? Yet she said nothing, their words wouldn’t change what was to happen.

Adelaida smiled, though she felt a surge of guilt again knowing Mew would not find the words she had spoken to Firefly of the unborn pups tasteful. Mew seemed very pleased with the prospect of being an aunt and Adelaida could understand completely. Alexey or Sankor were due to become parents, after one of them met the right canine, and Adelaiada would be the first to congratulate the new parents, then monopolize the children’s time. It would be one of them long before it was Ade’s turn, this was just something the mocha female felt to be true. " I am very happy for you." And indeed she was, and maybe even a bit jealous.

Mew let her thoughts wander for a few seconds, wondering whether they'd be nieces or nephews, or both, and how many - how they'd look and what skills or talents they might inheret from their parents. Should they end up looking too much like Firefly Mew considered for a second to "relieve" the mother-to-be of her burdens of bringing up children, although the alabaster femme knew that that was not her place. Although, Cercelee did expect her to tell her should anything that seemed out of hand cross Mew's ears, and should Firefly do one wrong step... she might very well end up not part of the council anymore, but the one standing before it. There should be a rule to decide who gets to have children, because Firefly was not suited. Although physically she was probably a good candidate.. most the women in her brother's taste seemed to be so.

Adelaida's words broke Mew out of her line of thought, and a warm smile spread across Mew's lips as her ears picked up the combination of words. Frankly, Mew was too. She was not scared to be interpreted as selfish - she so very rarely had something of her own, something she deserved. Her pups had been taken from her, Lubomir had run away, and she'd grown up with a mother elsewhere, a father she never knew, and a brother who was arrogant at best. Although, she knew Haku cared for her, he was just such a weird man. She'd never understand him, probably. Thank you... to tell you the truth I'm quite happy for me too, a tiny series of sounds escaped Mew's throat as she laughed, a mild trilling sound, but it lasted only a second. One of those polite laughs, but this one had some added depth in her satisfaction at soon earning the title "aunt". Do you have any children, or nieces or nephews of your own?

Adelaida smiled with Mew, enjoying her moment with her. It was right she should look forward to the new one’s arrival. Adelaida loved pups, it was something she shared with her sister and perhaps they had both inherited it from their mother. Kata had always held the beliefs pups were to be coddled, cooed at, cuddled and repeatedly told how cute they were. It was their sole purpose in life until they could talk and walk, during which time, while Kata remained very mindful of her brood, Fyodor really took up his role, teaching the children, spending time with them. The Koios family had been close, perhaps much more than other families.

" None yet, but soon I hope." Alexey had been taking care of their father too long, then their mother, and Sankor was busy finding himself. Ade never even imagined one day she would become a parent, but she had high hopes for her siblings. At least with puppies, their mates would be another matter. Adelaida didn’t know why, but in the back of her mind she felt she did not want Cwmfen to be the mother of Sankor’s children. She knew the thought probably hadn’t even crossed their minds, not even close, but all the same she held to that thought for a few moments longer.

Looking at Adelaida as she spoke, Mew crossed her arms in front of her and took on much of a relaxed pose, where she had previously just been standing straight up. She nodded at her words, and for a moment she thought about her own children - how Haku should have been an uncle. Perhaps Melisande had children by now? The ivory femme had no idea where her litter-sister was, although she was quite certain she wasn't dead. Melisande always had the air of someone who could take care of themselves. Soon Mew's head was tilted in thought - Adelaida had siblings here, didn't she? Oh how poor she was at simply contacting the outer world. She lived in a pack, but behaved like a loner unless duty was pushed in her face. She might know the names of most members, but she nothing about them. Adelaida wasn't exactly fresh around here now, yet she still hadn't bothered to make contact before now. It was silly of her, really. You have siblings here, don't you?

Adelaida merely nodded in response. Yeah, she had siblings and they were practically her whole world. “Sankor and I joined to wait for Alexey to come back here." Adelaida didn’t bother to mention that she still believed Alexey was mistaken in believing this pack to be home, to be a haven. That small bit would probably offend the women who had chosen Dahlia as her own. Adelaida would have rather stayed where their den had been, growing up, but a pack to the south had taken it over. Rabbit lake had been mostly claimed by other wolves and Adelaida had to write it off as a loss. Besides, it was unlikely Alexey would want to leave Dahlia de Mai anyway. " Our family has always been rather small, but very close." It was all she could think of to say.
