The sky's on fire - finished

................

Fire made it harder to breathe, and Emwe paced nervously back and forth only once, and whimpered. He kept himself close to Conor, geographically speaking, not entirely himself since his aunt's injury and disappearance. Still, they were not in the same house, for Emwe was not that clingy. This fire did not exactly help his instability, though, and when he thought about how everything bad seemed to follow him (for it was very sad to be Emwe right now, very very sad), he whimpered again. Only when Conor's howl rose above all the stinking scents and horrible roars of this fire did he collect himself, and moved out of the way of the fire, towards his brother.

........

Four-legged still, he did not even consider trying to fight the flames (water did not reach his mind at that point. He usually put fires out by stepping on them) until he saw what the others were doing when he moved into sight. He had seen most of their faces before even if he had never spoken to them, but now was not the time for social awkwardness. He realized now, for once, that he should stop worrying about his own hide, and start worrying about something else's. He understood what his brother was doing, and did not bother him like he usually would have. Racing towards a bucket, he scooped a large one up in his muzzle and bounded towards the small spring just up ahead. Adrenaline replaced the insecurity in his system, and he soon returned with the bucket full of water, only to grab another and running back to fill that one as well. He had not arms; it was all he could do, and he would do it well. World first: Emwe was useful.
