Unlike most willing or unwilling participants, Nala did not really have a personal stake in this war. He had no family in the area (and if he did, with the way his family had treated him, he did not think he would have cared), and he had not belonged to the clan for any length of time. The war had begun long before his arrival in the area, so he had not even been present to watch everything unfold. No, the war between the coyotes and wolves was completely foreign to him. He had never known the prejudice between the two species. The young coyote had simply come to the area at what could easily be considered a bad time, but he had been accepted, and so he had stayed. There was not much else he could have done, anyway. Nala was a follower with absolutely no concept of how to live his life on his own.

Her advantage of having two legs instead of the usual four was something Nala wished she didn't have. His teeth had made contact and he had tried his hardest to knock her down by hurting her, but the swift kick that came in response caught him unawares on the side, sending him toppling backward awkwardly. Shaking himself, the coyote stood up, sputtering in annoyance as he watched her set the puppy down. For a moment, he did not know whether he should go after the puppy or the mother--obviously, both of them were targets in this big battle. Then his eyes settled on the rock she had picked up, bright eyes wide and fixated on the object. That answered his question, though. She had a rock and hands to use it with, so she needed to lose, not the puppy. Nala jumped at her again, scrambling in the air for some sort of hold with claws and teeth at her torso, so much larger than his small stature, being a normal coyote and all.
