The water hit him like a slap. Barreling into the ocean with abandon, he hadn't anticipated that the chilly temperature would hit him as it did, such a vast contrast from the muggy summer air. The water went up his nostrils, evoking an unpleasant, prickling feeling all the way up his snout. He surfaced with a gasp for air and sneezed extravagantly. Swimming was a sport he had never practised before, as Mother had warned him and his brothers at an early age that water could be a severe hazard. He was old enough now to conquer the sea, and as he paddled awkwardly he relished the feeling of accomplishment.
At last he got the gist of how to move his feet and body in the water. Looking around, he couldn't see where his companion had gone. He let the waves carry him back to where he could stand upright and spotted Denali nearby. Oak entered the ocean again, this time more slowly, before swimming toward his friend. Yous a good swimmer! he yelled above the roar of the crashing waves. He wondered if Denali had ever been in the water before, for he really was paddling around like a pro. Wanna race to the showr? Oak was always game for a game.
