The fox studied him with something akin to suspicion. Given the situation, this was no surprise. Gabriel was not the type that looked like a rescuing hero—though he had done so in the past. He flicked one ear dismissively and watched as the fox shifted his paws gingerly. Something must be wrong with them.

Gabriel rose to his feet easily, his form moving with a grace that was at odds with his weathered exterior. “I don’t expect you to,” he offered flatly. Others had promised him the same and left. There would be nothing unique to him if the fox did the same. Though he did not say anything, Gabriel kept an eye on the fox’s gait. If his feet were really injured he would be worthless to the clan.
