She shuddered and Enkiel almost immediately withdrew his hand. He waited, red eyes staring darkly at the woman. While she responded to him, her eyes were wide and glassy and her reaction seemed slow. Enkiel frowned, his lips pursing together. The movement of her head surprised him, but meant she had not broken anything vital.
Suddenly she was wracked with another shudder, but this was far more violent. She coughed up blood and Enkiel’s eyes widened. That was something that he had not seen before—he had read about it, of course, but only a few diseases would cause such a thing. One of them was terribly contagious, and he feared it. The woman collapsed and Enkiel only then went to his pouch. He sorted through the small jars of crushed plants and found two that would suit his purposes. Juniper leaves and catmint. Putting a small amount of each into one hand, he moved and propped up her head. “I’m going to feed you herbs to soothe your throat,” he explained. Then he did just that—putting the herbs in her mouth before drawing a small canteen of clean water. A palm full of water was slowly poured into her mouth to help ease the herbs down.
