They had, of course, distinctive personalities, but were in many ways unable to express them without the ability of high speech. And carnivores were not always meant to make friends with creatures of prey. What was the difference between the deer she hunted and the horse he rode? Nothing except one was lucky enough to live under the protection of a canine.
