Big Grin

It was cold. That much could already be distinguished even under the thick, wooly blanket that lay over the mates. Ocean eyes of the girl’s were open and staring intently out the large window facing the turning tide. Her fingers flexed against the grip of her mate’s and slowly she slid out from under him. No matter how much the cold mornings seemed unwelcoming, Ever had to stick to her plan.

She planted a gentle kiss on Ezra’s ear and ventured into the main part of the cabin. Winter seemed to seep into all of their small windows and chill the youth right past her silver coat. She let a shiver rack her body while she washed her fur carefully from the basin of fresh water on the counter. It was warm unlike the air. Ever dried herself quickly and fluidly traveled around the shack to tidy things up before she left. A chest in the corner was finally brought to her attention.

Rolls of cotton cloth slipped between her fingers as she dug around for something appropriate for the day’s events. She finally settled on a green dress that subtly complimented her hips. The straps were thin, but she addressed it with Ezra’s black scarf. It smelt like him: warm, and comforting. Reaching over the odd shaped table, Ever grabbed her satchel and threw it across her shoulder in one graceful movement.

There were more things adorned in her red mane than usual. Just before leaving, she had added a green feather with black tips along with her natural feathers. She couldn’t help thinking she was starting to look alike an apothecary. The thought made her smile as she opened and closed the door silently and stepped out in to the bright world.

Snow drifts freckled the ground like the white spots on a deer’s back. Another layer had been added last night which caused her weak shadow to nearly disappear in the unevenness of the blanket. Saphraine’s golden coat stood out starkly in the grayness of the winter forest. Predictably, he had been grazing nearby and as soon as her footsteps grew closer, his head shot up. Ever rubbed her hands along his back to brush off some unaware snow. He nickered sweetly and finished the sparse grass he had found.

Lunenberg was a ways away, but on horseback it didn’t take more than an hour. She found the house easily; after all Ever had lived there was the majority of her life in Miracles. But what she wasn’t prepared for was what she saw. Outside was her adopted Father, sitting comfortable in the front of the house intently watching pups. Yes pups. The sight of them sent a fever through the girl. She stopped to admire them carefully before approaching. Quickly, she straightened her dress to a crisp and flattened the wild curls around her face. It was a self-conscious motion that the girl produced.

Saphraine sighed comfortably as they slowly trudged through the snow. Ever concentrated on the gentle movement of his new eagle feather in his forelock. Through the grapevine, the adopted daughter had heard her Mother was pregnant. Not too long ago had she discovered the same conclusion with her friend, Princess. And suddenly Ever was glad she had come to renew her long overdue visit.
