Her fingers trembled as she gripped the counger, tapping her claws against the top surface. She didn't want to look at him, irritation bubbling over in her chest. It was made worse when he didn't speak, simply going through one of his noises. She could feel the red and blue eyes of the German man boring a hole in the back of her chest. One of the alert, black-tipped ears atop her head twitched vacantly. The room had become darker and smaller, claustrophobia settling in the pit of her stomach.
When he finally spoke to her, he simply gave in, surprising the coymutt; she expected more fight in him. His tone made up for the lack of aggression, a sinking feeling consuming her irritation. He was angry. At least in the eyes of the woman. She took a deep breath, wiping at one of her eyes with the back of her tan-furred hand. Her objective changed; she just wanted to get out of the room, away from Cotl. Her crimson eyes darted across the wall, panic setting into her skull.
But the subject was changed with a simple sentence. You know how to read, right? The darkness that creeped into the corners of her sight faded away into nothing and she turned her head, glancing to her friend as he sat on the bed behind her. She wondered if it was okay to tell him the answer, if it would be perceived as a weakness. No, it was Cotl. Cotl was a friend.
"No. I can't read."
Talitha fell silent, stepping away from the counter and returning to the bed, kneeling atop the mattress to get comfortable beside the ginger male. Her journal was proof that she was illiterate, pages filled with seemingly nothing but symbols; true, she was able to decipher the homemade hieroglyphs, but she was certain few others could. A bonus, perhaps, as no one would be able to steal information from it.
