The one with the wolf in the water

Of all his children, it had been Wretch that had worried the dark wolf the most. She was born sickly, weak, and still looked it—lean despite her puppy fat, with sharp edges he attributed to her illness and not her genes. Larkspur had not spent enough time around coyotes to truly recognize them. If he had, he would have seen the exotic blood in Eris as filth, and known his little saving grace was not simply thin from disease, but from her blood. She showed signs of coyote while the others did not. Pandemic was large compared to his sisters, and Salvia had the timber coat that many wolves did, but both looked…normal. Wretch did not.

He had finished his ride with his horse early, and after rubbing her down and leaving her to find her own food in the forest outside of the caves, the dark wolf had gone looking for his children. Now that they were old enough to travel without supervision, they did so often. Having three meant trouble; two went one way, another went a third, and then suddenly they were scattered. Salvia had been lingering near the horses, showing no fear about the large beasts, and when asked about her siblings been vague. Larkspur warned her to be mindful of the hooves before he left, following fresher scents to find the others.

He trailed Wretch north, and found her outside of the caves. She was staring into a pool of water. Not aiming to startle her, the big wolf moved noisily towards his daughter.
