Pixie had little experience with listening to others rant and rage about their problems to her. She just wasn’t generally the person someone went to when they wanted to complain angrily about something. It probably didn’t have anything to do with her skill in the area of listening—something she wasn’t really bad at, even though she preferred talking—but she figured she didn’t come off as the sort of person who would want to hear other people’s problems. Most of the ranting she heard growing up was when she got in trouble and was chastised by her father and mother. You aren’t doing anything to help this pack, do you know how much energy we put into dealing with your silly ideas, bla bla bla… Most of what they actually said was lost to her.
But Jazper’s story was different. Pixie knew little about the warrior’s past, and though she had been in the pack for a while, she had yet to formally meet Kansas. She had just never gotten around to it, she supposed. The blue-gray fae listened to Jazper and was unable to hide the concern from this face; if Kansas was as bad as the gray giant described him, why would a respectable leader like Savina even consider choosing him as a mate? It didn’t make any sense to her. It seemed like Jazper was overreacting, though she didn’t say this out loud.
Instead, she said, as neutrally as she could, “But then it wouldn’t be entirely Kansas’s fault, wouldn’t it? I mean, if Kansas was only one of the wolves your father messed around with, then it must have partly been your dad’s idea.” She looked down once more at the inscription on her hand, then back at Jazper. “It sounds more like a stupid mistake than a horrible crime. Kansas seems like a nice enough wolf now, what with being the mate of the pack leader and having everyone else’s respect, from what I’ve heard. Don’t you think he just wasn’t thinking when he did that? He could’ve been drunk or something.”
