Gabriel watched her change, saw the doubt and the fear that overcame her face. She did not know what a monster her boy had become. It was better that way. Naivety could be her shield. Yet this too would only do so much, and the Aquila knew in his heart nothing she could say or do would change what he had become. Once he had cast a blind eye to the monsters that lived within his home. Terrible beasts lived within Inferni, including the dark-faced hybrid. After all, had he not killed his brother? Had he not sentenced his once-mate to death should she return? Most certainly, Gabriel was a monster.

He wanted to say that Itachi was this too, that his blood was bad, that Gabriel recognized the face of evil when he saw it. Those eyes were not Lykoi eyes. He had recognized them but not understood that. The boy would have destroyed one leader and crushed Halo in that same wake.

“He tried to kill my mother,” was all he said.
