There was little time to celebrate the keen shot she had taken. The arrow pierced Savina's shoulder and awarded Nuki first blood, but it did little to slow the woman. Fueled by grief and rage, Savina powered forward despite the wound. Now Nuki's location was revealed, too, and Savina trampled towards her. Before she could react, the alpha leaped into the air. Nuki's instinct told her to roll off of the branch, and she just barely threw her weight as Savina's formidable jaws clapped beneath her. She felt a piercing pain and twisted to see that the dark Secui had hold of her leg with her fangs, and half of the tree branch with her lower jaw. Nuki could not lurch away without tearing a wide hole in her leg.
She grabbed hold of the branch, dropping her bow to the snow below. The force of Savina's attack and the Lupercis' movements proved too much for the branch, and an ominous cracking sound split the air just seconds before the branch tottered forward, breaking from the tree and sending both women to the ground below.
Nuki hit the ground, softened by the snow, and took that moment to roll away from the enraged woman. Her eyes darted around, searching her surroundings. She did not see anyone accompanying Savina, so she still had a chance. But, damn! Her bow was beneath the tree branch, near where the woman fell, and possibly damaged. She glanced around for a route of escape, but could not keep her eyes off of the Consul for very long. She had to turn back before she decided on a good route. Sizing Savina up, she thought she could take this fight.
She jerked to her feet and spread her arms, fingers splayed and deft claws taunting. If she could get her bow she might be able to get another shot on Savina, though that would be a stretch. There was also still the bone dagger in its sheath on her belt, the same one she used to tear Denali to pieces. Nuki still did not know if Savina knew about the boy or not yet. Still, she decided to play the game.
“Savina! What is the meaning of this?!”
