:: It's one of those, "Why did she do that?!?!" moments. ::

Orin choked and writhed, screaming silently. She could not move, and she could not make a sound, she could not cry out or howl to alert anybody. No one would know anything had happened until it was too late. A second wave of adrenaline finally pulsed through her at the thought, and she was able to roll onto her stomach, and then rise to her hands and knees. Orin crawled, still gasping for air, to the door at the top of the staircase. She could not see the pup's nest from here.

Her hand flew to the banister and she pulled herself to her feet. The pain in her side protested, sending needles through her abdomen, chest, and arm, and it still felt like she was not getting enough air with each desperate breath. But there was no time, she could not wait to catch her breath, the mother could not wait to feel better.

Orin ran down the stairs, each step jarringly painful, but now that the initial blow had subsided she could deal with it. She took the stairs two-by-two until she swung around the end of the banister to see...

...two unmoving puppies...

A raspy moan trickled from her, and she ran over to the babes, dropping onto her knees at the edge of the nest. Her hands flew to her children... her daughters... and the moment she touched them each lifted their sleepy heads. The innocent little things had no knowledge of the danger they were in. But where was Demetrius? He took him!

Orin grabbed the edges of the pelt that her daughters rested upon and quickly folded it end over end, wrapping the pair up in a warm bundle. She scooped them up into her arms and ran outside, her eyes tracing the darkened district of Thornbury. There were clear prints in the snow.

She leaped off the porch, her arms tightly wrapped around her daughters, but she paused. Half of her wanted to pursue the man, to get her son back, but the other half knew she needed to get Shawchert. He was just a few houses away... hopefully...

In frustration, she opened her mouth and tried to scream, but nothing more than a weak whisper came out. It still pained her to breath and Argul's tight hold on her throat for so long had damaged her throat.

Orin spun around... and followed the tracks.
