Were there any overt signs of wariness from her mother, Elvira would have been none the wiser. Her experiences within the world were short and limited, leaving her with nothing as comparison. She knew that Elijah was different from Odette and Alaine, but she didn’t understand how or why—she merely accepted that as being just a part of who he was. In time, though, she’d come to realize more and more just how different he was. Of course, she was a jealous creature, requiring that she be the center of anyone and everyone’s world. Empathy was a distant, unknown ideal. The collie returned, chiding her daughter over the teddy bear’s destruction. Honestly, Elvira was proud of what she’d done.

She merely glared back in return, narrowing her yellow eyes to menacing slits. She would not be made to feel remorse for something that she’d enjoyed. Her gaze fell on the dropped toy and her attention immediately deviated—like the child that she was. Rising to her stubby legs, she quickly trundled over and snatched it up between her jaws, retreating before her mother could take back the stuffed rabbit. Plopping back down onto the corner of a blanket, she placed both forepaws over the inanimate body and assumed an expression that dared anyone to come and try to snatch it away from her.
