It was a natural part of progress to realize that the world wasn’t quite what it had been yesterday, and to become disillusioned. Boundaries were meant to be tested and rules broken. She’d never feared her mother, and now—just as any animal—she needed to be reminded of her youth and fragile body. Otherwise, the natural desire to dominate and take control would seep in, transmuting her into a vicious, uncontrollable beast. The world was her’s for the taking—what stood in her way? Selfishness and unbreakable independence left her a cross individual when anything dared to infringe on her desires.

Her mother shifted, drawing closer to the child in height. Warily, she watched. Warily, she sunk her teeth further into the rabbit, unmoving. Briefly, yellow eyes drifted as Elijah made his presence known, crouching against the collie’s leg and eliciting a sneer of distaste from the hybrid at this open show of weakness. Quickly, though, her eyes shot back to her mother’s—watching, waiting to see what she would do, almost daring her to make another move.

It was almost as though she wanted her to strike.
