the one that got away

Her blue eyes closed until an unfamiliar thwoosh broke the silence of the sundown forest. Turquoise shot open to see the white tail of her prey topple into the darkness; clearly, something had caused it to fall. Of course, if it wasn't going to run anymore, it would have been easy to pluck it from the ground. With an eagerness of a scavenger, she pressed forward; she went unaware of the creature hiding in the darkness, the hunter of her deceased catch. An obstacle in dragging the corpse back to her family in Crimson Dreams. Ghita was in no shape to win a fight for food, but her pride wouldn't allow her to deny it.

As she neared the body, she caught movement from the corner of her eye — something slid down the tree nearby and caused the Marino to stop and stare. In the shadows was a dark canine, the silhouette of an archer against the fading light. Her face contorted into a grimace of distaste. One foot was placed firmly against the torso of the animal, as if staking her claim on the body. It was clear what had killed it, as the arrow gave simple proof, but she was stubborn indeed. Her eyes narrowed and her arms crossed. "Go back up your little tree, friend."
