Salvia stared back at the stranger, eyes cold and terrible like her mother’s. Yet the man was not showing aggression to her, nor did he act as if she was out of line. This only reinforced ideas that others—namely, Sirius and Tlanti—refused to allow. She would be a monster as long as she was given free reign. So the scarred man with the dead eyes earned nothing but her terrible shadow-self.

Finally trusting him not to touch her meal, the puppy approached boldly and began sniffing at the jacket. “Why? It looks heavy. How do you move fast?” Childish thoughts. Why wear clothes that would slow a person down and make them noisy? She didn’t understand.
