If he had not come to her now, she would have hated him for it. Yet the girl wished it had never come to be; that he had never found Wretch in the forest. She stared ahead and watched his face swallow the starlight and turn it dark. Perhaps the stories had been wrong; perhaps Ankh had abandoned her sister and the dark god like Wretch had done. It felt palpable, then, and real. They were meant to be gods, but did the gods feel like this? Could gods feel so betrayed?

Pandemic’s bellow startled his sister, who jerked at the sound. Her pupils shrank almost instantly, and she found herself facing a wrath in the shape of her brother. She was reminded of her father. She thought of Harlowe and felt a shiver ripple along her spine. Salvia wished dearly to comfort him, but feared to touch the black beast her brother had become. “Then forget her,” the girl said lowly, voice rumbling. “If she doesn’t remember us, we won’t remember her.”
