Of all the monsters in the world, Salvia was nothing more than a child testing the boundaries of control and obedience. Others had drawn her firm, unwavering lines. To them she could not behave in such a manner, and she did not presume to do so when in their presence. Yet this stranger, with his dead eyes and his scarred face, he seemed like a peculiarity to her. She did not sense his irritation with her, for what sign he did give was hidden by his garments. Rather, she assumed nothing was out of the ordinary because he answered her soon enough.

The display left her with more doubt than answers, for it was a useless idea in her mind. Something to provide protection when their fur already did? Nonsense. Green eyes glimmered with a dozen unspoken questions as they returned to his face. This was a brazen act—she would not have displayed such a thing around Sirius or Tlanti. Her parents were different; they were still willing to let her get away with such a thing. Not for long, of course. She was fast becoming an adult. “I don’t think it makes sense,” she explained, raising her voice as if this might prove her point. “What if you get stuck? What if someone grabs your clothes?” Cat-like, she began to circle him, trying to pinpoint weaknesses in the garment. “Doesn’t it get hot?”
