They Paved Paradise

The male's breath caught as the stair dropped out from under the feline. Luckily, the cat had already had a grip on the shirt, and used it to climb up. The cat looked at him, and spoke to him. Tal was only moderately surprised, and inclined his head politely in return. "You're welcome. I'm Tal." He'd never spoken to a cat before...this was certainly a new experience for the pale furred male. Where he'd come from, back in Michigan, cats were largely ignored, though there was a large feral population of the felines in the city. They hardly deigned to speak to wolves, and vice-versa. In fact, the few times the two species spoke, the felines spoke in riddles, and the wolves just snapped at them.

This one, however, seemed different. There was an intelligence in it's eyes that seemed out of place in the smaller creature. Tal studied the feline, his gaze one of interest and curiosity. After a moment, he realized the feline might not know of the back stairs. "There is a set of concrete stairs coming up from the back of the library... there's a door, but if you frequent the library, we could prop it open with a brick or something to make it easier. Do you read?"

Now that he knew the cat could in fact, speak, he was curious to know more.
