She didn’t understand. What had gone wrong? The pumpkins just weren’t growing like they should. They had plenty of soil, lots of sunlight, and Orin did her best to water them on a regular basis. That’s all plants needed, right? But the pitiful vines that had started to sprout seemed to do little more than wither, and they were a sickly gray instead of a luscious green. This displeased Orin, and even though she didn’t know the first thing about botany she was upset at these results. They must be sick, but what was the problem?

She sat in the Thornbury garden that day, just staring at the pitiful little crops she had planted with Taleisen. Each second that passed her mood grew darker and darker as she fretted for the fate of her little treats. She wanted this fall to be a spectacular one, she wanted to play out a few human traditions she’d once read about, so her daughters would have a special season to remember, but judging by the state of her pumpkins, this wasn’t going to happen. Or, at least, it would be a pumpkin-less fall, and that just wouldn’t do. All of the pictures she’d ever seen of fall and winter holidays almost always involved pumpkin something.

Finally she stood up with a grumble. She picked up the watering can and let the fluid rain down over her crop, even though there were already little ponds encircling the sick little plants. It was her last, desperate effort to save the coming festivities. Would these things ever grow by autumn? Maybe by autumn next year. “Arrg!” she growled, and threw the watering can to the ground, the rest of the water spilling at her feet and churning mud over her foot-paws.

I give up, she thought, unduly frustrated. “Who cares, no one’s ever cared about holidays before anyway.” She muttered spitefully to herself, and stalked away from the garden, muddy footprints left in her wake. She didn’t even know where she was going, but she was headed towards the Thornbury shopping district, hoping to find some miracle pumpkin cure in one of the old storefronts.
