Thief in a Wagon

Chione Keisari

ooc text. first part before Terra approaches; second is after that

Chione was a bit tired from the short day of travel, and so was Mora. As soon as they parked the wagon, she let the brownish mule walk off before setting down camp.

Fire set, ashe got inside, fetched a pot with water, her olive bow, bamboo arrows and jade dagger, plus a thick cloak made with reindeer fur, and left. She did have food stored, but nothing like fresh meat! The black and white female climbed to the top of her wagon, and took a deep breath in the chilling night air. Many scents to track down, but a strong scent of sport not that far nor that old caught her attention. There was also a tender scent of wolf close by, but she'd be back soon. Being a loner could toughen up the most tender of souls. Which was her case; cute and loving as she was, most don't get to meet her darker self.

The emperor wolf threw the cloak over her back and pushed the hood over, buttoning the hollow designed for her ears, the preserved antlers julting out. The girl made a habit of cooking the cloak with scent-nulling herbs every now and then, so it would mask most of her scent. She left the pot open and close to the fire; if it grew too much, Mora was smart enough and carefully taught to put it out. The femme sent a warm goodbye smile and delivered soft paps over the horse-donkey hybrid's haunches, and raced off towards the source of the herd's scent.

........

Back from the short hunting, the girl had one of her usually white hands dirty with dry blood, one arm dragging a doe by the hind legs, head dragging behind her, blood dirtying her reindeer cloak. It was pretty young and small enough to carry, but still a burden on the small luperci's back. On her other hand, a frightened-looking young fawn. Brown eyes pratically popping out of their orbs, darting back and forth, ears glued to the back of its head.

The Keisari never meant to kill a doe with fawn, but she had a nasty-looking broken leg, and the female was surprised she was even still alive, much less the fawn as well. It was a favor, really. After all, what other predator would spare the little one's life, huh?

She was still a way behind, but the smoke was clear enough in the dark sky. Oh yes, this dow was more than enough for her. And with winter coming, better to start piling up enough food, just in case. The wind shifted, and the strong notes of a strange wolf snaked in her nosetrils. A guest? Or.... a thief? The penguin-like traveler was welcoming to new acquaintances, but being a lonesome merchant usually made her wary of most sneaking into her camp just like that. Since Mora didn't sound off the alarm, it was fine; smart mule, best guard.
