The male was certainly fidgety; that Vesper could gather from an instant of looking at him and his constant little movements. However, what that meant, exactly, was something she could only guess at. Any fool wolf had the right to be antsy after padding up to the fearsome coyote clan’s borders—but if that was the case, why wasn’t he gone? What purpose had driven this young, dark-furred wolf here? His antsy movements reminded her of Oliver—the willpower he tried to work up when she boldly challenged him.

It was a rookie mistake to associate a new face with an old one, but it overtook the hybrid’s then vulnerable mind in an instant. Her ears lowered and she took another step forward between the stakes, waiting for him to speak up. His words seemed to rush in an odd way, punctuated by verbal tics or interjections, but perhaps that was just part of the nerves.

Perhaps the Vigiles was not the best to ask about the membership roster of the clan, but Vesper took a few seconds to cycle through those she knew or had heard talk about. Only the newest were nameless to her. “I’ve never heard of a Makesthai,” the tawny female said at last; she wouldn’t risk lying to him by bluntly telling him that such a coyote didn’t exist, even if she sorely wanted to—wanted to make him go away and leave her alone.

Her body tensed once more when he stood; short for a wolf or not, he was taller than her in her lupus form, and she was a pretty small specimen anyway. Blue eyes hard, she looked up at him and held her ground, wondering if he would continue pestering her or make the wise decision and leave the Inferni borders.
