Her ears, eyes, and nose were working overtime trying to discern what was happening while keeping the struggling puppy in place. It was heartbreaking to hear Sarian's frantic cries for her mother and Kiara could feel the young puppy struggle with all her might to get away from her caretaker's grasp. Still Kiara would not budge and her jaws were firmly placed over Sarain's neck. This kept her front pinned to the ground as her hind quarters wiggled and contorted in many attempts to break free. The Ikusei was not hurting Sarian, but neither was she letting go. She remained steadfast, not even flinching as the puppy screamed for her mother again.

It wasn't long before Jace showed up, her secui form flying across the snow with all the grace of an arctic wolf. Soon she too was in the water and Kiara lost all sight of her. Due to her proximity from the stream and her head busy pining Sarian, the arctic wolf could not see what was happening within the watery depths. Still, her sapphire eyes search frantically for any signs of movement on the shore, hoping to see both females alive an well. Each second felt like an eternity as they passed slowly by. When Shiloh's weak voice broke out it wasn't soon enough. Kiara nearly sighed with relief but she realized the danger wasn't over yet. The snow wolf was kicking herself for being so weak, for not being able to jump in after her friend.

Moments later Shiloh appeared on the banks, followed closely by Jace who surfaced farther down stream. Both women were coughing up fair amounts of water, but at least they were alive and thats what really counted. She watched as X'yrin ran towards them as relief flooded her body. Kiara quickly let go of Sarian, but blocked her path just as quickly. "You will stay with me and follow everything I say. Understand." Sarain frantically bobbed her head up and down, her small form shaking with anticipation and here eyes filled with worry. Together, the Ikusei and puppy ran over to Shiloh. Both of them were anxious to see how she was. Shiloh was not an arctic wolf, and she was pregnant to boot. Her condition could not be good. Kiara wondered if Shiloh would be okay. She was weak, her heart was bad, and she had been in the water far longer than she should have. And what of the puppies? How were they, and what affect would this have on them?

Kiara's eyes widened with horror as she saw Shiloh go into contractions and push the first puppy out. Blood pooled and stained the snow, while Sarian let out a little yelp. Even X'yrin was not immune to the horror, her heckles raised as she stepped away from Shiloh. Kiara immediately blocked Sarian's path as well as her field of vision. This was not something a puppy should see. Frantically she searched for some place to put Sarian, somewhere that she would be safe until this whole thing was over. There was a small cluster of trees nearby where one unusually large tree stood. Using her snout to herd Sarain and her body to block her field of vision, Kiara was able to quickly move the puppy over to the trees. Her high pitched protests and shouts for her mother fell on deaf ears as Kiara moved Sarian to safety. There she deposited the silver puppy between the roots of the large trees. They were far away from the stream, close to where the group of wolves was, and most importantly they prevented Sarian from seeing the atrocities that were unfolding. "Stay here. Don't move, don't come out, and don't look." As if to emphasize her point, Kiara pushed Sarian down again and held her for a second while Sarian whimpered.

With Sarian taken care of, Kiara practically flew over the snow to where Shiloh was. Her sides where heaving greatly and her scars burned from the effort. The arctic wolf curled around Shiloh, trying to keep her warm just as Shiloh was trying to keep the dead puppy warm. Kiara could only watch as the grey woman tried to wake her unnamed daughter, the one Kiara would not name. She had passed from the world and to know her name would only grieve the mother. Slowly Kiara turned her muzzle to the sky as she let out a mournful song. Her howl was filled with loss and sorrow, and it announced the death to all of creation. Kiara did not know if the song was welcome, but it was something her family had always done to mark the death of a loved one. Even if the puppies were only alive for a few seconds, they at least deserved this right.
