the colors of the mad and the wicked

Thank you. ;___; <3 I feel like I'm all rambly for SoSuWriMo (info is here!). It made sense, also! >:3

Molcaxitl was the first to notice the Luperci stranger. Perhaps the horse, prey animal he was, had beaten the tawny coyote to it, but if so, the gelding made no indication of it and kept his placid pace. The tawny coyote, on the other hand, uttered a gasp and froze, instinctively pulling the lead rope so the buckskin equine would also cease his forward motion. Molcaxitl's eyes matched oranges in size and coloration as she regarded the Luperci, and the coydog shrank against the horse's foreleg, an incoherent whimper and half a word of her mother tongue escaping her maw.

Eris, on the other hand, more resembled the horse in reaction to the stranger. Drifter Bay and these flatlands before the ridge of the Halcyon Mountains were frequented by travelers, and Eris was familiar with this fact, rather unlike her slave. Molca was permitted to leave Salsola only with her mistress's blessing, which the raven-hued hybrid rarely deigned to give. The Auxiliary regarded the stranger with cool green-yellow eyes, a faint smile already playing across her muzzle. The yellowed tips of her teeth showed, and she offered a nod of her shaggy-haired head to the man. She drew out an elbow and placed one hand upon her thigh, the pelt-cloak falling out behind her to display the shock of white leather against the deep sable of her fur.

You startle my dear girl, the hybrid began, reaching with her opposing hand to stroke Molcaxitl's shoulder as if the coy-dog were livestock herself, capable of being calmed by no more than a soft word and a sugar cube. Such might have been the truth, as well, for the tawny coyote relaxed with the realization of her mistress's calm. Molca, however, was ignorant as to the root of the sable coyote's calm. No matter the buckskin gelding's even temperament, he was capable of a gallop, surely able to outrun an Optime the short distance to Salsola. Eris's true serenity, of course, came from the idea that Molcaxitl would be unable to keep up with the horse, and Eris could therefore sacrifice the slave's life for her own, should the stranger prove to be dangerous.

She does not realize you seem to mean no ill intent, the hybrid finished, her smile growing even sunnier now. What brings you this way, traveler? Eris asked, her voice acquiring a tone of cordiality close to sweetness. As with many of those roaming these wilds, the man seemed strong of body, possessing a stature Eris found both practical and aesthetically pleasing. His scars were viewed as little more than adornments to his past triumphs and trials, things to be worn with pride rather than shame. The coyote appraised him with her recruiter's eyes and found him positively bonny, though she contained her glee, lest he speak and prove himself an imbecile or a complete madman. He had passed her physical evaluation, and now she needed probe his mind and seek its character.
