when the cowboy's away...

Luckily, his small pack mate did not flail about or make his job harder when it came to lifting him up onto the mare’s back. The muscular cowboy was cautious all the same though, knowing that Sebastian weighed a bit more than perhaps he’d thought the lithe Italian would. When all was said and done and the ginger wolf was perched trembling upon Fern, Wayne might have stood back to admire this accomplishment. As it was, he pretended that all circulation was not getting cut off from the hand grasped by the male and nodded once more at the whimpered agreement.

Just walking, the Labrador said easily, his low tones as comforting and supportive as he could make them. She will sway back and forth, and you might feel a bit wobbly, but it’s just walking and you won’t fall. He supposed it would be fair to give this warning so Sebastian didn’t think the horse had summoned an earthquake or some nonsense.

He muttered a word to Fern, a simple command that let her know to be as gentle as she possibly could. He’d let a few others ride her before, such as the nearly mute dog-girl near Cercatori. This would be no different.

And so, grasping a rope he’d tied to a loop in her halter, Wayne took a step forward and let the mare walk beside him.
