The Witch Doctor

Word Count → 484 :: Late evening, on the southern borders of New Dawn territory. Sky's alone and in her Lupus form.

As a mother, Sky couldn't have been more proud of her children. Lena and Cody were growing quickly and already active members in the pack. Soon they'd be shifting and then they'd have their own ranks. Excitement bubbled in her chest every time she saw her children interacting with their family. New Dawn had proven to be the perfect choice and despite not really feeling comfortable in her Lupus form originally, Sky had grown used to it. She slept in the den with the pack and during the days, did her chores as a member. She'd collected a vast knowledge of where everything medicine related could be found within their territory and to her delight, she'd found plenty to work with. The woman couldn't have been happier.

As a mother.

As a girl, Sky wasn't happy. She felt restless. Her children were growing healthily and she had a pack to call her own, but she wasn't happy. She spent countless days along the borders, searching for a sign, anything, that her Myrddin and his father would come to live with them. She spent countless nights fearing for them, worrying, wondering if they were safe. She wondered constantly if there'd even be word should anything bad happen to the other half of her family in d'Arte. She felt resentment for their leader, Skye, bubble up inside her but there was nothing she could do. She couldn't go back.

And so, each morning she would greet the dawn and each evening, as the sun sank over the edge of the Earth, she would sit on the borders overlooking the South and wonder. Waiting. Every night, the same thing- nothing. She'd go home with a heavy heart and curl up with her children to sleep. This night, though, the air had changed.

She sat in her lupus form on the edge, staring into the darkness as the sun sank lower. The world around her was silent, hushed as night took hold and the shifts changed. She sat there, listening, watching, waiting. Hoping. Then, on a whim, for no reason other than hope, she howled- not for her family, not for a friend, not for her pack. She howled a mourning song, long and loud in the hope that maybe, just maybe, they'd hear her and howl back to let her know they were okay.

As her call died into the distance, she sighed. No return call came and she knew, yet again, she was alone. The echoes of her pack calling for her, checking for her safety, had long since stopped. They knew. They knew she left to sit there every night and they knew she'd call at least once, just to see, just to check. They worried but she wouldn't let them. She would be fine. She was fine. She was just... missing a few pieces.

And so, she would wait...
