when our mouths are filled with fire

The male recognized Ember's signal and followed her quietly, keeping his eyes on the old animal that he would, hopefully, be killing. He had a great respect for the creatures, especially the old ones, who had survived many winters. In a way, killing them was something he did regretfully. His life must go on, though, and he had a role as a predator.

When the female crouched, Hemming continued quietly, making an arc around his target. He held his spear with his hand above his shoulder, to avoid dragging it through the grass, and stepped softly to try to minimize the vibrations he sent through the ground. Reaching a good distance away from the beast, he chose a spot from which he could see Ember clearly. The two wolves would have to synchronize their attacks if they wanted to catch both of them, and visual communication was essential.

Hemming balanced the spear in his hand and wrapped his fingers around it carefully. The moment of truth was quickly approaching.
