Just like the ambiguous but splendid tattoos on his body, some told him they meant some things, and others told him otherwise; and he himself would speak of this indecision, failing to mention what the original and purposeful meaning behind them was. In reality, Tamerlane was an ancient conqueror, but unless this female had a passion for history, it was neither here nor there. It means me. That was answer enough, and he said it harmlessly and courteously. The Jager's question had been a difficult one; it was not usually easy to speak of your life to a complete stranger. But Anderung had spoken to him simply to socialise; so that's what he would give her. She seemed more awkward than unwilling, so he replied lightly: why wouldn't I care? |
