Tension began to creep back into Gabriel’s body. His muscles tightened, and this showed as the fur along his spine began to rise slightly. It was not a sign of aggression, but he was prepared—because words less then what he was about to say had started wars. Terrible, awful things. She did not look like the type to turn violent, but he had been surprised before. After all, his gilded sister had stabbed their brother in the arm and held him steady for that killing blow. Andrezej had been executed by his family.
Gabriel did not doubt much anymore. “They were lovers,” he said shortly, bluntly. “Your friend was addicted to it. That's why he refused to leave.” What other reason could there have been? Not when the shed stunk of sex and blood, not when that twisted gleam had burned in Pilot’s eyes. Behind him, the wind turned, and he felt the cold air rush through his dark tipped fur. The smell of the salt-water calmed him, even though he knew that something terrible had come to a front.
