into the abyss

The boy's eyes watched the rabbit flee, and was about to continue on when someone coughed to make themselves known. His head jerked up instantly, searching for the other wolf. He then processed what the older male had said, smiling sheepishly, although it was only half-hearted.

I wouldn't have been able to catch it, he explained. I've lost a lot of prey today; nothing wants me to catch it. And it sucked. No matter how hard he tried, no matter how fast he ran, or how quiet he was, they always got away. And then they seemed to laugh at him. Although it was a childish thought — animals could not be so crude, they ran purely on instinct — but nonetheless, it seemed that they were laughing. Mocking him and his lack of luck — or skill, although he would not admit such.
