    Even though she was clearly upset, Gabriel did not know why. Had he understood that a large part of it was indeed due to his own actions, he might have changed his tone. Unfortunately, the charcoal-brushed hybrid had never been one for empathizing. A world of violence had taught him only how to gauge opponents, and a cowering woman was a foreign concept to him. Every individual he had met in his life had been aggressive. Even Corona, whom he had never seen as particularly violent, had killed her own aunt and half-brother.
    The world was cruel, and he had always believed that everyone in it was the same. “I’m not going to hurt you,” he reassured her, his tone softening just slightly. “Calm down. I’m Gabriel.” Certainly, if she lived with his mother, she would know his name. That might be enough to help settle her.
