PUMPKIN KNIGHT

If Haven had known who Emwe’s parents were he would have been shocked to the point of being unable to hide his surprise behind a mask of stoicism. Firefly was his adopted aunt (though he never actually referred to her as an aunt, she preferred that he not) and he knew that Haku was an awful man that was capable of horrible deeds. To know that they had once been in love and had had children together would have made his jaw drop. Firefly was rough around the edges, but he genuinely liked and cared for the saucy older female. She had given him his dyed tattoo and it was something he cherished for it was the symbol of his coming of age and finding his duty and reason in life. To think that she could have cared for such a monster would make him see her in a different light that he would not like. Though through her apparent disdain for the man such thoughts had never crossed his mind. As for Haku, the question of whether or not he could possibly be a good father was easily answerable: absolutely not. It was probably good that Haven was ignorant, for he would have possibly inadvertently shattered the dream world that Emwe had built for himself. Such a shattering was a traumatic thing; Haven had experienced it first hand.

At the younger male’s response the Knight noticed that glimmer that some of the memories of what had happened may have been repressed. So many people had been mad, and there had been a lot of yelling. It was clear that such recollections bothered Emwe and Haven couldn’t help but feel the guilt that he had brought them up, even if he hadn’t meant to. The fact that the anger seemed to be directed at the boy’s mother was a telling clue. Perhaps there had been some sort of scam involved. Maybe the two boys had never really been kidnapped or anything of the sort. It was a bit of a disturbing idea and it clearly wasn’t something Emwe was comfortable with so Haven was more than willing to leave that topic be and move on to other things.

He had not at all been laughing at Emwe. It had been more an adoration for his child-like wonder and awe. It was an attribute that he himself had lost somewhere along the way (or at the very least it had been buried somewhere deep inside) and it felt good to see it again. The younger wolf was laughing along though and so he didn’t think for a minute that there had been any notions of being belittled. If there had been Haven would have been quick to extinguish them. He had to agree with Emwe, it was strange that something so small could be so dangerous. Of course bears were dangerous, they were bigger than wolves. The same with mountain lions, and even elk and deer could be a hazard if they kicked or struck you with their sharp hooves. Snakes were so much smaller though. “It is weird, I agree with you, but it’s true. I think that they must be immune to their own poison. Since they’re born with it maybe it just doesn’t affect them at all like it does other creatures, like us.” That seemed like a logical explanation, though it was really only him guessing at the reason.
