It was dreadfully ironic that some people only thought to return when their fortunes had risen; it was as if they didn't remember why they had left in the first place and why they could never be happy there, as if they thought they could infect their wretched birthplace with the happiness they had found elsewhere, as if they had forgotten they were a cursed breed in a cursed land. He had seen a lot of people leave in his time and of those, a quarter seemed to wander back months later and he could never figure out why. Why would anyone want to come back here if they had somehow managed to put it behind them? Corona had called it home, but even though he knew he would never leave, Laruku still found the word awkward on his tongue. Home? Was it really?
Three ghosts stood on the horizon and even without thinking about it, he knew who they were and why they had returned. It seemed like everyone was just rushing back through the floodgates, first Misery, Ahren, and a son of Ahren's newest litter, and now those who had supposedly died with their mothers. Maybe it was a sign that now, more than ever, his time was over and there were other perfectly capable people here to take over for him. So curse an old friend and a cousin with the responsibility because no one needs you anymore. The over-scarred hybrid approached them tiredly, twitching his tail behind him, almost feeling sorry for them that they had decided to come back.

He had known all along that Lisichka had simply left though he couldn't remember why or how anymore. It had been a long time and he wasn't sure he had cared in the first place. Who had these people ever been to him? Blood-colored eyes glanced briefly at the child; well, at least it wasn't another drop-off meeting as it had been with Adrastos, not that he had any idea where the hell Cercelee had gone to.
